Both its architecture, as in being weather-boarded from the 1st floor upwards, and location got me to this one. Quite a climb up along narrow passageways from Hastings' Old Town's high street to a good expanse of greenery for my faithful hound to enjoy. Very atmospheric sea mists rising up from down below in the direction of the Old Town and its stony beaches and fishermen's huts. Two real ales and so we were not disappointed for our mid-afternoon visit and met with friendly, prompt service from this local community-orientated pub and ventured into the rear garden which was moderately populated and came complete with a petanque course.

Greene King - Morland Old Speckled Hen4.50GoodVery good head and lacing and lasting and quenching my thirst from the hike up from the Old Town. Very much a strong infusion of caramel in its first hit of bitterness from this bitter from the Bury St Edmunds' Greene King Brewery. This bitter first came on the scene care of Morland Brewery in Abingdon-on-Thames, Oxfordshire, in 1979 and to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the MG car factory in their neighbourhood. A maltiness joining in on the act and a good biscuity hint or two splashing upwards. The general synopsis: a bitter maltiness rising and lingering. A touch too sweet for my liking. Not had an Old Speckled Hen for as long as I can remember.

The pub is found in Hastings, East Sussex, TN34 3JJ.

This pub was established in 1835, before the West Hill was developed for housing and with four windmills for neighbours. Today it stands in a residential street; a weatherboarded building whose appearance recalls the now-lost windmills. It is now the only surviving pub up on West Hill. Inside there is a single room layout, with a small raised seating area to the rear. Décor is mostly plain bricks and bare floorboards, refurbished in 2015. There is a garden at the back and a couple of pavement tables at the front which just about have a sea view.

We have visited this pub twice, seen 4 different beers and tried 2 of them.
