Visits Details

21 Jun 2025 (Hogan Sampling)
Fourth visit of the day and first visit to this Thorley Taverns' pub that used to be the clubhouse for the local golf course back in 1950s. Took about 15 minutes' walk from The White Swan further up Reading Street and taking a signed footpath across a field. Used to be the actor, Jack Warner's local when he lived nearby in the 1960s and who played George Dixon for some 20 years in Dixon of Dock Green. Oddly shaped, like a triangle, and not adorned as most of Thorley's pubs are with old framed photographs. Warm welcome and prompt service for our mid-afternoon visit but not busy in the least. Everyone no doubt soaking up the sun before the beer on local beaches at this time. Only the one real ale on and no doubt reflecting its smaller size than the average Thorley Taverns' establishment.

Ramsgate Brewery (Gadds') - No. 54.40GoodGood head and lacing on this local Ramsgate-based bitter and staying the course. A malty caramel-infused first hit. A bitter maltiness looming up as I gently putted it down the hole and a pleasantly dry bitterness lingering on the fairway.

I alighted from a bus here in order to walk to another pub, as I got off the bus driver said something like "enjoy the John Smiths". Well I ventured inside but did not take up his recommendation.
