Tasting Summary

These comments are the opinion of the individual reviewer and represent what they thought of the beer on a particular day in a particular pub. If a review is less favourable, it may be because the beer suffered somewhere in the supply chain between them and the brewery.

ChrisEExcellent21 Jan 2010
IanExcellent20 Jan 2010 Just about my favourite brown bitter. The malts are really outstanding and the finishing butter toffee is very good. So difficult to get a decent brown best bitter these days. And beautifully presented too. Only one thing to make it that bit better from the brewer would be to throw a few more hops in, but that's just me.
AndrewNot Tried20 Jan 2010 I didn't even know this was on until Ian ordered a 2 litre bottle of it. The lesson here is ask what's on.

It was a nutty brown bitter but I found the finish slightly harsh and sickly. It's never been my favourite Gadds. I should have had the No. 3 - other than the strength it's much more my type of beer.

IanGood22 Jan 2009 My favourite Gadd's beer. If I had to buy say 16 pints of just one of Eddie's beers it would be this one. Love the balance of sweet chestnut malts and the slightly peppery hop. Everything in a best bitter that Shepherd Neame Kent's Best isn't

IanPoor12 Nov 2008 It took a few pulls to get any liquid out of the pump so I guessed it had just got a new barrel and he was just pulling it through. Certainly the first pour didn't look very beery. But the barman didn't pour it away, he served it to me. It looked alright, but I did challenge him, he said that there is sometimes a back log of air that needs pumping out. Anyway it tasted vaguely of chemicals. Shame as this is a good beer, it just needed serving a bit better.
IanGood14 Oct 2008 Having seen Andrew's post on this beer recently, I decided to try it again. Tasty malty bitter.

IanGood17 Nov 2006 I had a swift half of this after the Dogbolter as I needed to catch the train. This is quickly becoming East Kent's best, best bitter. Attractive clear russet colour. Perfect malt/hop balance with tingly hop finish. Hop tends towards the aggressive as the beer finish progresses. Good beer.

IanAcceptable29 Jun 2005 Had this here a couple of weeks ago and it was a 4/5 very good. This was a bit odd. The beer went off on handpull so the barman took the class into the cellar behind the bar and poured the beer straight from the cask. Bit flat and cold, but actually this was alright by the end.
IanGood15 Jun 2005 Chestnut brown in colour, quite a hoppy nose, good smack of hops in mouth with some malt. A good balanced best bitter. Good length and finish of hoppy bitterness. Really liked this
