16 Aug 2025 (Hogan Sampling)
5th visit of the outing: This micro no longer calls itself such but is still small in size. It can pack them in typically late afternoon for a live band on my earlier Saturday visits. This visit was early enough, though mid-afternoon, to be minus the band. A good few punters in but our party of two were comfortably seated. Warm friendly service and a good range of four real ales on, two from Kent-based breweries and two from Essex.
Mighty Oak - Oscar Wilde Mild | 3.70 | | Head and lacing, very good, with a good creaminess on show, and lasting, good, on this Essex dark mild from Maldon. A pleasantly dry malty first bite. A malty bitterness rising aided by its Maris Otter Pale, Crystal and Black malts. To my taste buds, the odd nutty, chocolatey and fruity note or two coming to the fore. A dry malt-infused hoppiness from its Challenger hops sailing off into the sunset. No less than CAMRA Supreme Champion Beer of Britain 2011 and Champion Mild of East Anglia 2016. Very moreish! |
Mighty Oak - Burntwood Bitter | 4.00 | Not Tried
Kent - Prohibition | 4.80 | Not Tried
Pig & Porter - Cosmic Jive | 3.40 | Not Tried

4th visit of the outing: This micro that no longer calls itself such is still small in size but packs them in typically late afternoon for a live band on my earlier Saturday visits. This visit was sufficiently early to be minus the band but still a good few in, including a familiar face from SE London who had now joined us on this outing. Warm friendly service and a good four real ales on to choose from.
Goody Ales - Bleangate Brewery - Good Heavens | 4.10 | | Head and lacing, good, and lasting well on this Herne Bay-based amber-coloured best bitter from Herne Common, south-west of Herne village, which is home to the first ever micro in the UK which opened in 2005. A very bitter first bite. A fruit-infused hoppiness rising from its Kentish Pilgrim hops. A pleasantly hoppy bitterness sailing off. |
Kent - Pale | 4.00 | Not Tried
Shivering Sands - Castle Pale | 4.50 | Not Tried
Hop Fuzz - Black Udder | 4.40 | Not Tried
12 Jul 2025 (Hogan Sampling)
4th visit of the outing: Busy for late afternoon but friendly prompt service and four real ales to choose from. Had some good ones on my earlier visits this year. So, back with great expectations after my climb up to Bleak House to visit their newly opened tea-room and antiques shop which shuts slightly early at 3pm. Charles Dickens holidayed at Fort House, as it was then called, in the 1850s and 1860s, and wrote David Copperfield there. He is said to have also drafted his novel, Bleak House, whilst in residence leading to Fort House being renamed Bleak House in the early 1900s.
Canterbury Ales (sometimes badged as Canterbrew) - The Knight's | 4.60 | | In very fine form was this dark ruby best bitter from this Chartham-based brewery, south-west of Canterbury itself, and set up in 2010. Head and lacing, very good, and staying the course. A malty bitter first bite. A moreish fruity hoppiness shining through its bitterness with the odd hint of a nut or two tantalising my taste buds. I was left very refreshed indeed by its pleasantly smooth bitter maltiness lingering. |
Canterbury Ales (sometimes badged as Canterbrew) - The Merchant's | 4.00 | Not Tried
Nightjar (formerly Slightly Foxed) - Lost In IKEA | 4.20 | Not Tried
Dark Star - Hophead (was 3.8%) brewed by Fuller's | 3.40 | Not Tried
21 Jun 2025 (Hogan Sampling)
First visit of the day following seafront walk and high street café. Not overly busy was this centrally-located micro for our early afternoon visit on this sultry summer's day. Broadstairs so much busier than last Saturday and when there had been a torrential rainstorm the night before. Prompt friendly service from bar staff and barstool seating for myself and fellow real ale enthusiast from SE London on our daytrip.
Georges - Broadsword | 4.70 | | Came with very good head and lacing and lasted on this extra strong bitter from the Great Wakering-based brewery set up in 2010, north-east of Shoeburyness in Essex. A moreishly dry bitter first hit. A pleasant malt-roasted flavouring looming up on the palate and a satisfyingly dry hoppiness winning over and lingering. Very quaffable but another style to try! |
Golden Triangle - Shenanigans | 4.70 | | Good head and lacing and lasting on this porter from this Norwich-based microbrewery set up in 2011. A dry roasted malt-infused first hit. A moreish bitterness, aided by its Norfolk barley, climbing up amid the odd barbecued-biscuit, caramel and blackcurrant flavourings. A moreish bitterness lingering. |
Bexley - May Place Spring Ale | 4.10 | Not Tried
Hop Fuzz - Goldrush | 4.00 | Not Tried
14 Jun 2025 (Hogan Sampling)
Quiet footfall in this micro which no longer calls itself a micro. Still quite early in the afternoon and before it had a chance to fill up. As the sun was truly shining outside, many were soaking it up at this time rather than the beers. Prompt and friendly service and plenty of seats and bar stools to sit on.
Tatton - Tatton Best | 4.20 | | This bitter is still produced by Tatton Brewery, and badged as such, and whose beers I do not recall trying before. But it ceased brewing north-east of Knutsford and south-west of Manchester after some 14 years due to no longer being able to sustain its operating costs. It has joined forces from June 2024 with Kent-based brewery, Wantsum, at St Nicholas-at-Wade, south-west of Birchington-on-Sea. This best bitter came with very good head and lacing and lasting throughout my half sampled. A moreishly dry bitter first hit. A pleasant maltiness rising up and lingering with the odd hoppy note thrown in for good measure. |
Iron Pier - Perry St Pale | 3.70 | Not Tried
Titsey - California Spring | 4.20 | Not Tried
Golden Triangle - Shenanigans | 4.70 | Not Tried

22 Feb 2025 (Dosser)
4 beers on, all at 4.70. Packed out again with blues fans and dogs. Beers only sold in purple plastic glasses at £1 deposit. We sat outside to escape the crowds.
Goody Ales - Bleangate Brewery - Good Lord | 5.00 | | A very short pint even after a top-up. Hard to tell when you can't see through the plastic. Watery taste with little flavour. |
05 Oct 2024 (Hogan Sampling)
Quiet on the inside but only very early afternoon with the sun blazing outside. Warm friendly welcome and very prompt service.
Mad Cat - Green & Gold | 4.10 | | Superb head and lacing. A fresh, hoppy mouthfeel from virgin green hops. |

Wantsum - Heart of Darkness | 4.50 | Not Tried
Lister's (latterly brewed at Wantsum) - Golden Retriever | 4.00 | Not Tried
31 Aug 2024 (Hogan Sampling)
Quiet for early afternoon visit but a warm welcome and quick, friendly service.
Goffs - Black Knight | 5.30 | | Very creamy head and reminds me of those ferocious waves hitting over the harbour quay. A lovely dark ruby red with chocolatey, dry malt flavours with a hint of hoppiness. |
Wantsum - Hengist | 5.00 | Not Tried
Canterbury Ales (sometimes badged as Canterbrew) - The Miller's Ale (originally 4.5%) | 4.20 | Not Tried
Westerham - Light Ale | 3.20 | Not Tried
17 Aug 2024 (Hogan Sampling)
Very busy but a bar stool at side window to be had. Quick service from attentive barmaid.
Shivering Sands - Ribersborg Stout | 4.70 | | Very moreish with a dry aftertaste and in perfect condition. If you like liquorice and charred toast flavourings, you are in for a treat. |
