22 Nov 2013 (Bear & Ragged Staff)
A long time since I've seen such an array of quality beers at this pub and great to see so many people enjoying them.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Salopian - Kashmir5.50ExcellentAnother beer that I wasn't keen on first time round. Still think it's a bit confused, nevertheless a good, strong citrus style beer.
Llangollen - Welsh Black Bitter5.50GoodSeem to remember being disappointed with this beer the first time I tried it. This was quite pleasant, nutty sweet and malty.
Titanic - Shugborough Farmers' Half4.80GoodTypically Titanic and a bit of an all rounder. Very nice.
02 Oct 2013 (Bear & Ragged Staff)
Usual sort of evening.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Chapel - Babylon5.00ExcellentA bit different to the last time I tried this. Clean, fresh and full bodied with a good nuttiness and a little smokiness.
25 Sep 2013 (Bear & Ragged Staff)
Peaceful,relaxing end to the day.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Oakham - Scarlet Macaw4.40GoodTypically Oakham. A good citrus bitter, seems to have lost some of its tropical flavours.
Waen - TWA3.70GoodOn top form. A good reasonable session ale.
Blackwater (sub-brand of Salopian) - Hair of the Dog4.10GoodA beer with a very distinctive flavour probably best described as honey and kemon cough sweets. Pleasant enough.
Chapel - The Last Supper5.60GoodStrong and smooth. A little hazy but still good.
17 Aug 2013 (Bear & Ragged Staff)
Mini beer festival. Twelve ales on show, barbecue outside, entertainment inside, lots of people milling around. Good atmosphere.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Crouch Vale - Best Bitter4.00GoodGood all rounder, excellent condition and presentation.
Thornbridge / Thornbridge Hall - Jaipur5.90GoodExcellent condition, good but not one of my favourites - God knows why because it seems to be everybody elses.
Titanic - Sundeck4.30GoodNothing special but nothing untoward. Typically Titanic.
Salopian - Darwin's Origin4.30GoodFor me, the best beer on show tonight. Bags of flavour, a proper beer.
Lymestone - Seven Stone Weakling4.70GoodStrongish brown ale, quite sweet. Very drinkable.
03 Aug 2013 (Bear & Ragged Staff)
Quiet early evening.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Oakham - Citra4.20ExcellentIn my opinion the best of the Oakham portfolio at the moment. Must rate in my top ten beers ever.
Stonehouse - Station Bitter3.90ExcellentSuperb condition, always consistent. Must be one of the most flavoursome session beers around. Now appearing at a Punch tavern near you.
Three Tuns - Stirling4.10ExcellentThis is becoming a favourite of mine. Consistently good, an all round quality beer.
Six Bells - Leo4.30GoodA pleasant, standard bitter. Good condition.
05 Jul 2013 (Bear & Ragged Staff)
Quiet early evening.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Oakham - Citra4.20ExceptionalThis was on top form and in my opinion the best of the Oakham portfolio. Crisp and clear a refined and cultured citrus bitter. Packed with flavour and served on gravity. Fabulous.
Chapel - Miracle4.40ExcellentThis beer is evolving into something special and already winning awards at festivals. Good citrus and malt flavours with a slightly peppery aftertaste. Very good.
29 Jun 2013 (Bear & Ragged Staff)
Very quiet Saturday late afternoon.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Tunnfield - Stiperstones3.70ExcellentThird time I've tried this and it was back to its original excellent flavours. Malt and hops in abundance and well balanced. A lot of taste for the ABV. Again bordering on exceptional.
Titanic - New World4.40GoodI enjoyed this. Yes, typically Titanic but there was some good malt and distinctive hop flavours that combined well together, good balance and refreshingly different.
Six Bells - Cancer3.90GoodAnother decent monthly ale from this brewer. Light and hoppy, a refreshing session beer.
15 Jun 2013 (Bear & Ragged Staff)
Great to see and talk to so many locals. Are things looking up?
BeerABVScoreNotes
Oakham - Bishops Farewell4.60GoodOn good form but wish they would give Citra a try! Or for that matter any one one of half a dozen other Oakham ales that are as good if not better than Bishop's Farewell.
Offa's Dyke - Barley Gold3.80GoodA couple of years ago, I wouldn't have even tried a beer from this brewery, so bad were they (in my opinion). This was good, a nice malty session bitter.
Chapel - Angel's Share4.00GoodMade with German hops - there was a good malty and hoppy character and the overall taste was very pleasing. A good bitter.
29 May 2013 (Bear & Ragged Staff)
Quiet at early doors.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Oakham - Bishops Farewell4.60ExcellentOn good form.
Three Tuns - 1642 Bitter3.80ExcellentNever disappointed with this tasty session bitter. Lots of flavour, good body and balance and well presented.
Salopian - Golden Thread5.00GoodOn good form but still too lemony.
Chapel - Babylon5.00AcceptableSmooth, a little malt and you can taste the alcohol coming through. Not enough flavour.
21 May 2013 (Bear & Ragged Staff)
Few locals and a few non locals.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Tunnfield - Stiperstones3.70GoodAnother disappointment - nowhere near as good as previously. Shame.
Eagle (formerly Wells & Young's, formerly Charles Wells, formerly Wells) - Courage Directors (use Banks's entry now please)4.80AcceptableTotal disappointment, nothing to commend this at all other than it was drinkable.
