12 May 2013 (Bear & Ragged Staff)
Quiet mid afternoon session.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Salopian - Shropshire Gold3.80GoodTypical Salopian.
Six Bells - Zodiac3.90GoodA decent malty bitter.
Six Bells - Gemini4.40GoodPleasant, light porter style ale.
07 May 2013 (Bear & Ragged Staff)
Quiet Tuesday early evening.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Sarah Hughes - Dark Ruby6.00ExceptionalThe complete dark beer. Perfect balance and body, great fruity and malty and darker tastes. Straight out of the barrel and spot on.
Tunnfield - Stiperstones3.70ExcellentOh yes! Lovely malt and good hop characteristics, perfect balance, good body. A simple, no frills beer and it is good. Borders on exceptional - if it is consistent then it must be one of the best beers around at this abv.
Chapel - Miracle4.40GoodA new Shropshire brewery from Duddleston Heath, or so I am told. I drank this cloudy, straight out of a nine pint mini keg - it was pretty good. A blonde beer with some decent citrus flavours. Look forward to this on full draught. You heard it here first, before Beermad or Quaffale - look out for this brewery!
04 May 2013 (Bear & Ragged Staff)
First day of the second annual beer festival. Good entertainment, good food and great beers, it looks like being a busy weekend.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Sarah Hughes - Dark Ruby6.00ExceptionalThe beer of the festival for me. Very deep ruby red in colour. The flavour is a complementing mixture of fruit, hops and malt all in perfecr balance. Great condition, straight from the barrel. Superb.
Salopian - Requiem4.70ExcellentDark, crisp, fruity and dry. Very nice.
Holt's (see also Joseph Holt) - Two Hoots4.20GoodFairly light tastes but there was some citrus at the end.
Wincle - Butchered Brown4.30GoodAnother ale bordering on excellent. Not usually a fan of brown ales but this was smooth and packed full of flavour, some nice roasted and darker flavours in the mix.
Tunnfield - Cannon Rock IPA4.20GoodA bit hesitant at trying this after my last experience with this brewery. This really was very good, something for everyone - good malt, nice hops, fresh taste and a good mouthfeel.
Flipside - Random Toss4.40GoodBordering on excellent. Cracking pale ale with some good citrus flavours.
12 Apr 2013 (Bear & Ragged Staff)
Fairly quiet early evening. Hopefully some new life being breathed into the pub. Only time will tell. We can only hope.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Salopian - Hop Twister4.50ExcellentOne of Salopian's best.
Stonehouse - Station Bitter3.90ExcellentMiddle of the road and dark but this is an excellent middle of the road beer and an excellent dark, malty, fruity bitter.
Oakham - Bishops Farewell4.60GoodThis would have been excellent, bordering on exceptional two or three years ago, but times have changed and new beers have evolved. Once number one in my list, now struggles to make the top ten. Still bloody good.
Monty's - Manjana3.90GoodApparently to be renamed 'Old Jailhouse'? A dark fruity beer. Ok but nothing outstanding.
Six Bells - Taurus4.60GoodNot sure where to put this, dark in colour but a bit tangy and lively for an out and out mild, not quite bitter enough for a dark bitter. Middle of the road but OK, doesn't drink at 4.6%.
30 Mar 2013 (Bear & Ragged Staff)
Busy in the function room, fairly quiet in the main body of the pub.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Oakham - Bishops Farewell4.60ExcellentStill good but no longer the top dog.
Titanic - Shugborough Mi Lady's Fancy4.60GoodAn OK bitter but typically Titanic. Good condition and presentation.
Stonehouse - Sunlander3.70GoodWell balanced, hoppy bitter, crisp and fresh.
Monty's - Mischief5.00GoodMiddle of the road and very drinkable, my only criticism - a bit resiny for me.
Six Bells - Ares4.30GoodLively, semi dry bitter. Very nice.
03 Mar 2013 (Bear & Ragged Staff)
Quiet Sunday afternoon. Six ales on tap.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Titanic - Compass4.10GoodTypically Titanic.
Six Bells - Pisces3.70GoodA decent light bitter.
Waen - Sick & Twisted6.00AcceptableSupposed to be a coconut stout. Not much coconut, some coffee and too acidic. Waste of a good stout.
03 Feb 2013 (Bear & Ragged Staff)
Some of the 'old faithfuls' in attendance. Nice to see them. Beer range seems to be improving. Lets hope this is an ongoing trend.
BeerABVScoreNotes
White Horse - Village Idiot4.10ExcellentSomebody had put this on the 'beers to get' board. How right they were. What a cracking bitter. Why haven't I tried this before?
Strathaven - Timorous Beastie (superseded by 4.9% version)3.90GoodSome toffee and a little tangy bitterness. A bit too sweet for me.
Welbeck Abbey - Aphrodite5.20GoodI think the best way to describe this is - a more delicate and refined version of Jaipur. Very nice.
27 Jan 2013 (Bear & Ragged Staff)
A few staunch regulars still in attendance.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Stonehouse - Station Bitter3.90GoodGood, but not its usual excellent self.
Oakham - Bishops Farewell4.60Acceptable????
Six Bells - Aquarius3.90PoorTasteless - perhaps a very slight bitter aftertaste.
12 Dec 2012 (Bear & Ragged Staff)
Great to meet up with old friends for some food, a pint and a chat. Very pleasant.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Black Hole - Supernova4.80GoodA citrus style bitter with a fairly dry finish. Syrupy in parts.
07 Dec 2012 (Bear & Ragged Staff)
Quiet evening.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Kelham Island (probably brewed by Thornbridge now) - Ace of Spades4.00GoodFirst time out I thought this was not too good. This time I got some of the lager tastes that it purports to be. Some yeast and quite crispy. Not bad.
