Visits Details

25 Nov 2012 (Bear & Ragged Staff)
Now down to four real ales. There seems to be very little in the way of new ales (in the sense of new to the pub) coming on. Nevertheless, core local drinkers were in attendance, so there was some good chat to be had.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Titanic - Shugborough - Butler's Revenge4.10GoodThis was Iceberg under a different name. Six of us tried it and were unable to distinguish it from Titanic Iceberg - which just happened to be on tap so comparison was easy. Either the licensee has it wrong or the brewery has it wrong. Whichever, the person paying with their hard earnt cash is being misled.
18 Nov 2012 (Bear & Ragged Staff)
Quiet Subday afternoon, still some good chat to be had with old friends.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Three Tuns - Stirling4.10GoodNice malts and fruit lead you to a reasonable bitter finish. Good body but a little resiny.
Six Bells - Brew 1014.80AcceptableI have this at 4.5%. Deep ruby in colour, a little malt, kots of fruit and a bit sweet. Poor body let this potentially decent pint down.
11 Nov 2012 (Bear & Ragged Staff)
Just a few of us sat huddled round a candle!
BeerABVScoreNotes
Oakham - Bishops Farewell4.60ExcellentOn very good form, always consistent but some days are better than others and today was one of those days. When on this form, this is one of the best beers of its type.
Plain Ales - Respect4.00ExcellentStunningly good, crisp, clear, refreshing bitter. Lots of similar beers about but few as good - three pints good!
13 Oct 2012 (Bear & Ragged Staff)
Fairly quiet early evening.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Three Tuns - 1642 Bitter3.80GoodVery good amber / golden, middle of the road session bitter - nicely balanced malt, spice and hops. Unusual for me to have three or four pints of one beer at the exclusion of all others, but this really was that good.
28 Sep 2012 (Bear & Ragged Staff)
Great to see so many people at the bar, lots of newcomers as well; all makes for a good atmosphere and a good pub.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Abbeydale - Absolution5.30AcceptableLast one out of the barrel; disappointed as there didn't seem to be anything outstanding, flavours were bland. In fairness this has gone like hot cakes so lots of people obviously do rate it. Can't see the fascination myself.
Abbeydale - Daily Bread3.80AcceptableReasonable at 3.8% and easy to drink but this particular pint seemed fizzy which took the edge of the flavours that were there!
24 Sep 2012 (Bear & Ragged Staff)
Quiet Monday early evening.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Titanic - Cappuccino4.50GoodThis was well crafted and a superb and pleasant to drink beer. A little light on body and I don't think I could drink more than one per session. Lots of coffee aroma and coffee, malty, nuttiness in the taste. An absolute must.
Monty's - Mischief5.00GoodAn uncomplicated fairly strong middle of the road beer. A bit resiny for me.
16 Sep 2012 (Bear & Ragged Staff)
Just half a dozen of us.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Thornbridge / Thornbridge Hall - Jaipur5.90GoodChoice of a classic for the last pint of the day. A little hazy, lots of spicy, orange marmalade. However I am convinced that this is slightly different to the Jaipur of four or five years ago - alternatively, the last couple of pints I have had of this beer may not have been on top form!
Monty's - Sunshine4.20GoodConsistently decent ale, medium bitter, good balance and body.
Six Bells - Castle Bravo4.70AcceptablePlenty of body but flavours were muddled and unpronounced. Not sure what genre to classify this as - a fairly strong medium beer?
Marston's - Strisselspalt4.00PoorI have enjoyed the single hop beers produced by Marston's, in my opinion though this was poor. Tastes were weak and bland - a faint hint of bitterness.
30 Aug 2012 (Bear & Ragged Staff)
A peculiar atmosphere this evening, not sure what's occurring!
BeerABVScoreNotes
Stonehouse - Sunlander3.70ExcellentSuperb again. A class act and a great addition to the portfolio of this local, noted brewer. Packed with flavour at 3.7%
Titanic - First Class3.80GoodMiddle of the road and typically Titanic. Pleasant and easy going.
Monty's - Sunshine4.20GoodWell balanced flavours and good body in this medium bitter. Very pleasant.
11 Aug 2012 (Bear & Ragged Staff)
Sat outside in the beer garden, lots of people eating al fresco.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Sharp's - Doom Bar4.00GoodSeems to be getting everywhere. Uninspiring but not bad, especially at £1.00p a pint!
Titanic - Deckchair4.40GoodA little sweet maltiness and a little hoppy / citrussy bitterness. Typically Titanic.
18 Jul 2012 (Bear & Ragged Staff)
Sat outside in the early evening sun without getting rained upon. Lots of like minded people joining us.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Springhead - Maid Marian4.50GoodNothing exceptional but it was a good drink. I have had three or four pints over the last few days and struggle to say why this is good.
Three Tuns - Cleric's Cure5.00GoodClassic IPA, syrupy, sticky and some honey. There was another taste that complemented all this sweetness but I couldn't put my finger on it. Strong body and good balance.
Prescott - Grand Prix5.20GoodJolly nice beer, lots of berries and slight citrus leading to a half bitter finish. Deep red in colour, nice balance and body.
