08 Jul 2012 (Bear & Ragged Staff)
Busy late afternoon.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Oakham - JHB3.80ExcellentA lighter version of the familiar Oakham taste - a good session beer.
Millstone - True Grit5.00ExcellentQuality, smooth, citrus, strong ale.
Six Bells - Supper3.60GoodNot keen at first but it really does grow on you - my evaluation changed from one of OK at the start of the pint to one of 'lets have another' at the end. Good session ale.
23 Jun 2012 (Bear & Ragged Staff)
Very quiet early evening.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Wychwood - Elderwych3.80GoodVery pleasant floral tastes, delicate, light and crisp.
Titanic - They Think It's ............ Ale Over4.50AcceptableRun of the mill and unexceptional. Slightly bitter sweet finish.
Banks's - Lion's Roar3.80AcceptableVery odd start with an initial taste of metallic toffee. But settled down into an unexceptional middle of the road ale.
Plassey - Cwrw Tudno5.00AcceptableWouldn't be first choice for me, I found it too sweet and syrupy - I guess a reasonably strong pale ale.
15 Jun 2012 (Bear & Ragged Staff)
Busy early evening.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Orkney (Sinclair) - Dark Island4.60GoodA dark beer with the usual dark flavours all nicely balanced. Not a heavy beer which made it easily drinkable.
Marston's - Marynka4.00GoodIn my opinion, the best of the single hop beers brewed by Marston's so far. Some delicate, floral flavours bordering on medicinal at times. Should have started with this and would probably have got even more from it. Nice drink.
03 Jun 2012 (Bear & Ragged Staff)
A thoroughly miserable day outside, welcoming inside.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Waen - Blackberry Stout3.80GoodNot a stout expert, I thought this was a bit thin. The dark nutty flavours and aroma were great, the tang of the blackberry made it even better.
Ole Slewfoot - Citraville3.90GoodA good malty, citrus bitter.
Clearwater - Devon Dympsy4.00GoodMalty, fruity and slightly hoppy. all the flavours were delicate and were well balanced.
Hereford - Hereford Best Bitter4.20AcceptableSweet and malty. Where's the bitter?
06 May 2012 (Bear & Ragged Staff)
Our first beer festival - over 35 real ales available. Despite there being beers from all over the country, the old favourites proved hard to live with. Jaipur was voted best - Snecklifter, Bishops Farewell were in their usual consistent good form and the relatively new Sunlander from Stonehouse was also excellent.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Jennings (since closure now brewed at Marston's) - Sneck Lifter5.10ExcellentEnough has been said about this superb beer, no need to add to it here.
Oakham - Bishops Farewell4.60ExcellentHave tried lots of other beers over the weekend, this still rules the roost for me. Consistently good, great citrus bitterness, so well balanced and clean and fresh with every mouthful.
Titanic - Iceberg4.10ExcellentBest wheat beer around, in my opinion.
Stonehouse - Sunlander3.70ExcellentAbsolutely packed full of flavour and all at 3.7%.
Crouch Vale - Brewers Gold4.00GoodYou can understand why this beer has won so many accolades. So much going on in the glass and a very distinctive finish. Bordering on excellent.
Thornbridge / Thornbridge Hall - Jaipur5.90GoodAnother beer that for me doesn't taste quite as it used too. Nevertheless, always worth a visit and still very good and very strong.
Millstone - True Grit5.00GoodDisappointed, this isn't as i remember it. Or is it that similar beers of this genre have just got better.
Summerskills - Ninjabeer5.00GoodVery fruity and didn't taste as its strength suggested. A bit unbalanced and one dimensional.
Plain Ales - Innspiration4.00GoodAnother very good , pleasant ale, but nothing that lifts it above the rest. Good body, good malt and fair bitterness.
Millstone - Tiger Rut4.00GoodA bit rough round the edges and a weaker version of its big brother True Grit.
Wyre Piddle - Piddled as a Parrot4.00GoodSomething for everyone, malty, bitter and fruity - not quite balanced for me, but pleasant enough.
24 Apr 2012 (Bear & Ragged Staff)
A quiet early evening.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Titanic - Lifeboat Ale4.00ExcellentCopper / chestnut coloured, medium bitter. An awful lot going on in the glass but the outcome is pleasing. Confirms my previous opinions of this premium ale.
Marston's - Hallertau Mittelfruh4.00AcceptableAnother of Marston's single hop ales. A German lager hop variety, not a bad taste but it was very one dimensional. OK but not for me.
22 Apr 2012 (Bear & Ragged Staff)
Strange sort of late Sunday afternoon atmosphere.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Burton Bridge - Stairway To Heaven5.00GoodA well balanced malty and hoppy bitter.
Titanic - 19124.80GoodA smokey, malty and hoppy ale all in one glass. Very tasty.
Green Duck - Duck Blonde4.20UndrinkableI have never marked a beer undrinkable before. Outrageous or different, I don;t mind, but tasteless and insipid is unforgivable. Every one served went back - so not just my opinion. In the end we all agreed that there must be a problem with this particular barrel. I do hope so!
18 Apr 2012 (Bear & Ragged Staff)
One or two locals in at early doors. Good chat and drink.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Oakham - Bishops Farewell4.60ExcellentWhenever in doubt, I turn to this consistently good, premium ale. Never disappoints and always satisfies.
Thornbridge / Thornbridge Hall - Jaipur5.90ExcellentFlavour, body and balance. This beer has everything, the only criticism is that it is too easy to drink - and as another contributor said "so easy to get Jaipured". Wonderfull stuff.
Six Bells - Blob On4.00AcceptableWhy the need to produce another mediocre beer each month instead of producing a portfolio of six or seven classic ales? This was an ordinary, medium bitter.
12 Apr 2012 (Bear & Ragged Staff)
Just right for two or three decent ales and a good chat.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Jennings (since closure now brewed at Marston's) - Sneck Lifter5.10ExcellentNot a lot more to be said about this wonderfully dark, smooth, tasty and consistent ale. Bloody good!
Plassey - Bitter4.00AcceptableAn odd thing to say, but - a sweet bitter! Chestnut coloured with a reasonable body - not at all sure on this one.
Vale - Grumpling Old Premium Ale4.60AcceptableUninspiring medium ale.
01 Apr 2012 (Bear & Ragged Staff)
Relaxing Sunday afternoon.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Six Bells - Spring Forward4.60GoodNo nonsense malty bitter. Lots of malt followed up with a good helping of hoppy bitterness. I have this at 4.4%.
Monty's - Manjana3.90GoodUnexceptional chestnut coloured ale. A liitle malt, some hops and fruit - all in good balance and fair body.
