Great early evening, full of locals and great conversation. Very enjoyable.
Waen - Scrum And Get It | 4.10 | | Presumably a one off brewed for the six nation's championship. Absolutely fabulous no nonsence 'nutty and dark malt' beer without the usual heaviness. Please keep this in your portfolio. |
Hop Back - Summer Lightning | 5.00 | | First try at this and it certainly didn't drink at 5.0%, it was easy and smooth. The downside was that it was neither one thing or the other and seemed lost. I got some biscuity malt and some citrus hop, but it didn't stand out and there was something stopping it being a great ale. |
26 Feb 2012 (Bear & Ragged Staff)
A busy Sunday evening, great to see so many locals.
Titanic - Capt. Smiths | 5.20 | | Not sure what style of beer this would be classed as. It was smooth, a little malty, a little fruity and a little hoppy finish, all in good balance and with reasonable body. |
Brakspear (at Marston's Wychwood) - Oxford Gold | 4.00 | | Disappointing, particukarky as this was recommended. There is a beer in there somewhere beneath the sulphur and yeast. Not for me. |
20 Feb 2012 (Bear & Ragged Staff)
Quite a few in at early doors and some good chat.
Wyre Piddle - Piddle in the Wind | 4.50 | | Totally confused. This is either the most brilliant beer in the world or the worst. It was like looking at an artwork by Kandinsky - good or awful? The aroma was off putting, but there must have been every taste available to the brewer in there somewhere. A talking point if nothing else. |
Marston's - Single Hop: Galaxy | 4.00 | | Of the increasingly popular lemon / citrus genre. Ok, but there are far better examples out there. One dimensional and far to lemony. |
Six Bells - Ow Do | 4.00 | | Acceptable and forgettable. |
09 Feb 2012 (Bear & Ragged Staff)
Good company and good conversation with the few that were in attendance.
Titanic - Black Ice | 4.10 | | When I tried Black Ice before, it was a fresh barrel. This was reflected by the crisp, fresh flavours. The pint I had today was from a barrel that has been on for six days. What a revelation, the flavours had become roumded and smooth and a momentary grassy sweetness had developed. Absolutely delicious. If I remeber correctly, Titanic Plum Porter was at its best after several days. |
Waen - Rush and a Push | 4.30 | | A wonderful dark ale, lots of roast flavours including walnut and liquorice. Smooth, well balanced and full of body. |
05 Feb 2012 (Bear & Ragged Staff)
A quiet Sunday afternoon.
Titanic - Black Ice | 4.10 | | Dark and full of flavour without being overpowering. Not too sweet and a reasonable bitter finish. Excellent. |
Brakspear (at Marston's Wychwood) - Bitter | 3.40 | | Darker than I expected, some fruitiness followed with a pleasant lasting bitterness. |
Jennings (since closure now brewed at Marston's) - Cocker Hoop (aka September Ale) | 4.60 | | Light and fresh, middle of the road bitter. |
29 Jan 2012 (Bear & Ragged Staff)
A very happy house tonight. Must be something in the water.
Milestone - Olde English Ale | 4.90 | | A dark ale with lots of dark flavours trying to get out, but they were weak and veiled by a thin malty sweetness. Not for me, others thought it very good! |
26 Jan 2012 (Bear & Ragged Staff)
Nice and quiet, sat down with a good book and a good pint, or two.
Wentworth - Camberwell Beauty | 4.00 | | The name might give you the impression that this was going to be light, delicate and fragile. It was light golden in colour, and that's where the similarity ends. This was a full on, in yer face, pale bitter. My mistake was to have it first - I had to wait half an hour before I could taste anything else. Robust, flavoursome, real bitter as it should be. |
23 Jan 2012 (Bear & Ragged Staff)
Not many in the pub, but those that were, were good company.
Oakham - Bishops Farewell | 4.60 | | Consistently good and on top form tonight. Must be one of the best beers of its type, in the world, ever, part I. |
Titanic - Full Steam Ahead | 4.40 | | This, to me, was a quintessential English bitter. A little malt followed by a beautiful, smooth, lasting hoppy bitterness. The bloke next to me, who had the pint after and is a self confessed bitter man, thought it was rubbish! No accounting for this real ale! |
Castle Rock - Screech Owl | 5.50 | | A gorgeous light coloured IPA. Easy to drink, a load of fruity malt perfectly balanced with citrus hoppiness. Beware, this is easy to drink and strong. Scrumptious. |
21 Jan 2012 (Bear & Ragged Staff)
Busy and getting busier, not many locals.
Wood's - Shropshire Lad | 4.50 | | This is my idea of a typical English ale. Starting with a little sweet maltiness and fruit leading to a slightly dry, light bitterness. Medium body and good balance. |
16 Jan 2012 (Bear & Ragged Staff)
Car park full, pub almost empty. Apparently there is a salsa class taking place in the function room! Must move with the times - not.
Wychwood (now brewed at Banks's) - January Sale | 3.80 | | The pump clip stated 2.8% abv and the price (£1.80) reflected that. If this was 3.8% then this was unacceptable, if it was 2.8% then we should commend Wychwood for having a go. In truth, there are a lot of low abv ales much better than this. |
