Visits Details

14 Jan 2012 (Bear & Ragged Staff)
Quite busy this evening, lots of locals and good conversation. How a local should be.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Ringwood - Old Thumper (now superseded by 5.1% version - separate entry)5.60GoodFruity, full bodied and strong. Pleasant.
Marston's - Pedigree4.50AcceptableAnother beer I haven't tasted for many years. Either my tastes have changed or this beer has. Medium bodied, slightly malty and slightly sweet. What a shame!
Marston's - Wai-iti4.00AcceptableAccording to the pump clip, this is a brew made using a single New Zealand hop variety and there should be a smattering of lemon and lime. There was certainly an aroma of lemon and lime and the drink was clean, fresh and unfortunately bland. Not a good example of this genre of ale.
11 Jan 2012 (Bear & Ragged Staff)
There has been a funtion of some sort on today. Very busy at early doors. One or two locals for some gossip.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Stonehouse - Sunlander3.70ExcellentA long time in the brewing, but yet another quality beer from this brewer. Straw coloured, a light maltiness gives way to a fragrant and delicate, citrus hop bitterness. Outstanding flavours at 3.7%.
Monty's - Sunshine4.20GoodSmooth, was my initial reaction. This was a nicely hopped medium bitter with a little citrus. Not much in the way of malt. I can see, or rather taste why this is an award winning beer.
06 Jan 2012 (Bear & Ragged Staff)
Fairly busy, good conversation.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Waen - Janners Pride4.60GoodA bit thin for 4.6%. sweet and malty, which I would normally steer away from - but it was smooth and easy to drink and there was a little acid bitterness at the end. Ok.
03 Jan 2012 (Bear & Ragged Staff)
Very quiet at early doors.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Shires - Best Bitter3.80ExcellentA proper uncompromising bitter. No frills, clean in the mouth, good body and full of taste with each mouthfull. One of the best bitters I have ever tasted. Wonderful.
Salopian - Oracle4.00GoodA beer of the fragrant, citrus hop genre. A bit rough round the edges and not as smooth and subtle as others but none the worse for that.
24 Dec 2011 (Bear & Ragged Staff)
Not too busy, nevertheless a nice friendly Christmas cheeriness. Merry Christmas. XXXX
BeerABVScoreNotes
Marston's - Old Empire IPA5.70ExcellentI shy away from Marston's whenever I see it, strange considering I was brought up on the stuff. I'm glad I tried this. It was nicely malty and fruity with a medium dry finish. Good balance, good body and smooth to drink . No hesitation in having this when I see it again.
Titanic - Night to Remember4.30GoodA middle of the road ale, a little malt and some hoppiness. Nicely balanced and good body.
20 Dec 2011 (Bear & Ragged Staff)
Quiet!!!
BeerABVScoreNotes
Wadworth - 6X4.10AcceptableTwenty five years since I've had a pint of this. Dificult to believe we made such a fuss the first time around. This was bland and dull, slight maltiness and sweet. In fairness, others liked it!
Lymestone - Pounamu4.20AcceptableA strange combination of malt and hops (New Zealand hops i believe). Whatever, it wasn't a particularly pleasant combination.
12 Dec 2011 (Bear & Ragged Staff)
There seem to be more and more people coming in at early doors.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Banks's - Ringwood Fortyniner4.90GoodNicely malted medium ale. Good balace and easy to drink. Will have to try again.
Marston's - Wychwood Hobgoblin IPA (was Ruby Beer, was Hobgoblin)4.50AcceptableA beer that gained a notoriety more from its advertising campaign rather than the quality of the beer. Dark - the malt and fruit are out of balance and a poor body. Did I also get a hint of sulphur?
09 Dec 2011 (Bear & Ragged Staff)
Very busy Friday night, not many regulars about.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Titanic - Stout4.50ExcellentA smooth, dark brew, not too heavy. Nicely nutty with burnt caramel and a little blackcurrant. None of that harsh bitterness at the end, instead a rounded bitter finish. Good body with the fkavours in good balance.
Green Jack - Orange Wheat4.20AcceptableNot a great fan of wheat beers and this did little to change my mind. A hint of orange / marmalade but nothibg else to help it along. Reasonable body and well presented but overall I was disappointed.
Abbeydale - Daily Bread3.80AcceptableNot a bad pint, easy on the palate and easy to drink. A little malt, good body and smooth. Bordering on good.
03 Dec 2011 (Bear & Ragged Staff)
5.00 pm on a Saturday afternoon and I am the only one in the pub. I need something to read or someone to talk to!
BeerABVScoreNotes
Llangollen - Llangollen4.20AcceptableA little fruity, a little malty and a reasonable body but uninspiring.
Moles - Elmo's Fire4.40PoorSome maltiness but totally lacking in any fire! Difficult to say much about such a tasteles beer.
26 Nov 2011 (Bear & Ragged Staff)
Now open from midday but the pub was still empty at 1600 hours. Hope the early opening catches on.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Jennings (since closure now brewed at Marston's) - Cocker Hoop (aka September Ale)4.60GoodA good pint, nothing spectacular but nothing untoward. A clean, crisp almost full bitter, perhaps a little coarse and slightly harsh.
Titanic - Steerage (superseded by 3.8% version - see separate entry)3.50GoodAt 3.5% a good session beer, not a full bitter but there was some fruit and hoppy bitterness in there. Better than its strength suggests.
Jennings (since closure now brewed at Marston's) - Cumberland Ale4.00AcceptableA standard semi bitter ale, crisp and fresh but little else. Nothing to praise and difficult to criticise.
