19 Nov 2011 (Bear & Ragged Staff)
Lots of locals in residence and lots of good, friendly chat.
Ringwood - Boondoggle | 4.20 | | An inoffensive, golden and smooth ale. A little malty and I think a faint hint of orange. Very forgettable. |
14 Nov 2011 (Bear & Ragged Staff)
Another quiet early evening!!!
Titanic - Lifeboat Ale | 4.00 | | Bordering on excellent - a dark, not quite full bitter (in my opinion, definitely not a mild), a little malt, a little fruit and a little, but lasting, hoppy bitterness. Very nice. |

Just four of us in the pub on a Sunday afternoon? Not much atmosphere and disappointed by the range of beers.i.e. only five on and four of those were from the Marstons . Banks' portfolio.
Jennings (since closure now brewed at Marston's) - The World's Biggest Liar | 4.30 | | Exactly as the tasting notes say - a malty bitter with chocolate and coffee. An odd combination of tastes but not offensive and certainly warranted another pint |
08 Nov 2011 (Bear & Ragged Staff)
Very quiet at early doors.
Banks's - Mansfield Old Baily | 4.80 | | Delightfully malty and nutty medium bitter ale. A little thin on body. |
Titanic - Engine Room | 4.60 | | Pleasant, middle of the road medium bitter ale. Difficult to find much else to say. Oh! yes, well balanced and smooth. |
21 Oct 2011 (Bear & Ragged Staff)
An odd atmosphere, change of landlord apparently imminent.
Stonehouse - Off The Rails | 4.80 | | Flavoursome dark ale, without being overpowering. Nicely balanced and medium body. |
Wolf - Lupus Lupus | 5.00 | | A mid range golden ale. Couldn't believe my eyes when I saw this East Anglian ale in the Marches. It isn't a typical East Anglian beer and in my opinion was nothing to get too excited about. Shame given Wolf's otherwise excellent portfolio. |
13 Oct 2011 (Bear & Ragged Staff)
Very busy with functions. Lots of non locals in - good to see it busy.
Tring - Jack O Legs | 4.20 | | Probably the most middle of the road pint of beer I've ever had. All round jolly good pint - fruity, no outstanding maltiness or bitterness, a little thin on body and good balance. Nicely smooth. |

Technical problems meaning that all beers are being served directly from the barrel - wonderful for the real ale crowd, not so good for the lager boys. Still warm enough to sit outside.
Oakham - Musashi | 4.40 | | Another unmistakable Oakham ale. Crisp and refreshing with hints of lemon, vanilla and possibly pineapple. Fortunately I enjoy Oakham ales but I do understand those that consider each new brew to be a variation on the very excellent theme of Bishop's Farewell. |
Ascot - 5/4 Favourite (formerly Alligator Ale) | 4.60 | | Lots of fruit and malt at first and then a hoppy, slightly bitter and slightly dry finish. Worth another pint. |
Wood's - Shropshire Lass (was 4.1%) | 4.00 | | I think my disappointment arises from my preconception that this was going to be similar to Shropshire Lad. It isn't. There was plenty of fruit and sweetness but little else to tempt my palate. Oddly enough it warranted a second pint. |
25 Sep 2011 (Bear & Ragged Staff)
Busy function room and restaurant but quiet lounge!
Oakham - Inferno | 4.00 | | Undeniably Oakham with lemon citrus in good proportion. |
Castle Rock - Harry Wheatcroft Nottinghamian Celebration Ale | 4.20 | | Difficult to see how some regard this as a bitter! Thin, sweet and a little malty, however I did get some underlying hop flavours. Overall not for me. |
17 Sep 2011 (Bear & Ragged Staff)
Exceptionally quiet Saturday evening - no atmosphere to talk of.
Everards (see entries against Joule's & Robinsons whilst its new brewery was being built) - Old Original | 5.20 | | A long, long time since I had Everards in any guise. This was fruity, hoppy and a little malty. Also very smooth. |
Titanic - Iceberg | 4.10 | | No nonsence bitter, clean, crisp and full of flavour. |
31 Aug 2011 (Bear & Ragged Staff)
Just me and the bar person.
Woodforde's - Wherry | 3.80 | | I have been drinking in this area for twenty years, in that time I have seen East Anglian ales no more than five or six times. You can imagine my delight to see a top Norfolk bitter in this neck of the woods. Well balanced between the hoppy bitterness and the biscuity Norfolk malt. Fresh and clean with every mouthful. A very special East Anglian ale |
