29 Aug 2011 (Bear & Ragged Staff)
A very, very quiet bank holiday. Just two customers - quite pleasant really!
Purple Moose - Glaslyn Ale | 4.20 | | I had looked forward to a pint from this brewery for some time and I wasn't disappointed. There was an awful lot going on in the glass at various stages - fruity, malty, nutty and hoppy - and they seemed to be in good balance. Hopefully we will get the chance to taste other ales from this brewery. |
Summerskills - Hopscotch | 4.10 | | Very vague flavours in this unexceptional medium ale. Not very inspiring. |
Ludlow - Black Knight | 4.50 | | A black ale with the usual dark flavours (burnt caramel, roasted malt, liquorice etc.), slightly thin body. Similar to so many other ales of this style - so whilst there was nothing exceptional, it was a good clean, fresh drink. |
07 Aug 2011 (Bear & Ragged Staff)
Very busy Sunday afternoon. Good chatty atmosphere.
Stonehouse - Off The Rails | 4.80 | | Superb nutty bitter. Lots of flavour with good balance and body. |
04 Aug 2011 (Bear & Ragged Staff)
A very quiet, balmy, summer evening.
Oakham - Inferno | 4.00 | | Another quality Oakham ale. A little fruit and a light dry bitterness. |
Titanic - Hop A Long (Shugborough) | 4.10 | | A proper bitter in every sense of the word. Some liked it a lot and some seemed to dislike it intensely. No middle ground - a bit like Marmite. I liked it a lot. |
Titanic - Stately Gold (Shugborough) | 4.10 | | A smokey, dry bitter, not unpleasant. OK in every other aspect, body, balance etc. |
28 Jul 2011 (Bear & Ragged Staff)
Very,very quiet early evening pint.
Stonehouse - Station Bitter | 3.90 | | Top notch session beer, lots of taste and body. I have commented on this beer before but it still surprises and pleases wherever and whenever bought and with every pint. |
Ossett - Yorkshire Blonde | 3.90 | | An odd blonde beer. Good body and very little bitterness, slightly sweet and slightly malty but it had a little bit of something (not sure what) that made it very drinkable. Pleasant dry aftertaste. |
19 Jul 2011 (Bear & Ragged Staff)
Great early evening banter all washed down with some good ale.
Green Jack - Summer Dream | 4.00 | | A real pale ale, pleasant floral aroma with malt and hops in good balance - dry aftertaste. Cracking pint on the verge of excellent. |
17 Jul 2011 (Bear & Ragged Staff)
Extremely quiet Sunday afternoon / evening.
Butcombe - Gold | 4.40 | | Delicate fruit, malt and toffee flavours all in reasonable balance. Not the best for me, but definitely worth a try. |
Big Lamp - Mulligan's Stout (aka Summerhill Stout) | 4.40 | | A typical ale of this genre. Liqourice, burnt caramel etc. etc. Reasonable balance and body. |
08 Jul 2011 (Bear & Ragged Staff)
Very quiet Friday evening.
Titanic - Sundeck | 4.30 | | Run of the mill beer, perhaps more bitter in the finish than most. Nothing special. |
03 Jul 2011 (Bear & Ragged Staff)
Busy afternoon leading to a quiet evening. Very pleasant company.
Oakham - Bishops Farewell | 4.60 | | I have commented on this excellent ale before. I think it is worth a second mention because of its consistency. Always recommended as a final drink of the evening because of its strong, refreshing flavours. |
Bath Ales - Barnstormer | 4.50 | | Lots of lovely dark flavours, liqourice, vanilla, chocolate and coffee. Well balanced but a little thin on body and a slightly acidic aftertaste. |
18 Jun 2011 (Bear & Ragged Staff)
Extremely busy Saturday evening. Rather see it busy than empty.
Wyre Piddle - Piddle In The Dark | 4.50 | | A bland, watery, thin mild. A faint acidic aftertaste was not pleasant. I expected a lot more for 4.5%. |
Titanic - Shugborough Tower Of The Winds | 4.20 | | It has been a long time since I tasted a beer quite as bitter as this - not a bad quality, but this was a little one dimensional i.e. bitterness and nothing else. |
11 Jun 2011 (Bear & Ragged Staff)
Lots of friendly chat all washed down with good ale.
Oakham - Scarlet Macaw | 4.40 | | Typical of an Oakham ale with its grapefruit bitterness. I take it that the tropical name is meant to reflect the hint of pineapple in the aftertaste. |
Titanic - Longitude | 4.40 | | Disappointing, I don't mind bitterness leading to a sweet aftertaste, but they didn't seem in balance and the flavours were jaded. |
