2nd visit of the outing: Prompt friendly service for our early afternoon visit of 8 of us. Said to have first opened as a pub in 1796, it was a gem of a proper old-fashioned pub in a quiet backstreet, just outside the walled city of Canterbury, offering two changing cask ales and one regular, Timothy Taylor's Landlord.

| Greene King - Peach Cooler | 3.40 | | Following on from the Spoons' Ruddles Best, this Bury St Edmunds' pale ale was equally very low gravity but a great refreshing taste and not overly peach-infused. Head and lacing, very good, and lasting, good. A hoppy first bite from its First Gold and Alora. A peachy fruitiness alongside stone fruit rising up on my palate and lingering. A hint of honey in among its light maltiness sailing off. Said by the brewer to be a new kid on the block this summer and certainly my first sampling of it. |

Lunchtime catchup with a couple of old school friends. We talked about the old days and current medical conditions. One had some old school mags proving that I won the pole vault in 1972, I don’t think there were many kids that could do it on a fixed pole landing on very hard sand! Pub looks to be doing a reasonable trade these days. Very friendly.

Late afternoon. Just the two of us in. The landlord was a bit overpowering - especially in bigging up his full tie to Punch Taverns. £4 a pint tells it own story after the bargains in a couple of Thanet’s micros.

Arrived here at 11:15 after the drive from Brighton. It was of course closed, as it doesn't open until 12, but...the door was unlocked and the lights were on so we thought we'd try our luck. Luckily the new owner was more than happy to serve us (as it was really 12:15 by rights).
