Fifth visit of the outing: My first ever visit to this, one of Thanet’s first micropubs and the inspiration behind the now demised micropub and brewhouse, the Four Candles in Broadstairs. This micropub now only shuts on Tuesdays since new management took over in the last 6 months by all accounts. A warm welcome for our early evening visit and seating to be had both inside and out on this clement day despite it being very petite on the inside.

| Northdown - Bitter Seas | 4.20 | | Served with lasting head and lacing on this amber-coloured bitter from the local Northdown Brewery established in 2018 just inland from Margate, Kent, making it the town's first working brewery in 50 years. A dry fruited first hit from being dry-hopped with New Zealand hop varieties, Pacific Jade and Rakau behind for me flavours of stone fruit and nuts. A hoppy fruitiness rising from its Northdown and Fuggles hops in the mix from the start of the brew lending earthy and herbal hints. A distant maltiness rising lending light toffee infusions from its speciality malts such as Chestnut & Caramel Malts also behind its deep caramel sweetness to balance out the heavy bittering hops, and alongside its traditional British pale base malt such as Maris Otter aiding a bitter-sweet flavouring. A dry hoppiness sailing out with a fruited wave or two. Served in very good nick. |

Apparently this micropub is only open at weekends but they still managed to be serving 6 ales on a cold Sunday afternoon to a packed pub.£3 to £3.40 a pint so offering great value. Lots of takeaways available to get you through the week!

Lunchtime- first stop on our Thanet crawl - but we liked it so much we stayed for the whole session. All beers in very good condition. Plenty of chatty regulars. Our group of 7 made the pub pretty much full at times.

The pub is found in Westgate-on-Sea, Kent, CT8 8RE.
Another of the new generation of Micropubs. This single storey building is situated close to Westgate-on-Sea railway station in an alleyway between the Carlton Cinema and Coral's bookmakers. The pub has an almost complete collection of Good Beer Guides from 1975 onwards. A mixture of breweriana and kitchenalia adorn the walls and lampshades are made from upside-down colanders. Usually 4 real ales on sale served from a cooled cellar room in the corner which has a viewing window. 2014 Thanet CAMRA Branch Pub of the Year. Changed hands in May 2016 as the original owners Pete and Gwyneth retired from the business. Local CAMRA branch Micropub of the Year 2019 and 2020 and overall local CAMRA branch Pub of the Year 2019 and 2020 too.
