Visits Details

30 May 2026 (Hogan Sampling)
4th visit of this outing to Broadstairs: My first visit to Trigger’s Broom, the former Four Candles Alehouse, and where this re-invented micropub opened on 23rd May 2026. Friendly, prompt service from the barmaid for our late afternoon visit. Busy both inside and out. Its sweeping changes include now featuring a smallish bar counter with two handpumps for two cask ales in the cellar below. It also has behind the bar counter two casks on gravity dispense with temperature-regulated cooling jackets, making it a total of four casks. The tables are made out of upturned hogshead barrels with high wooden bar stools positioned around them. There are now two WCs in place with the male WC comprising just a urinal. Dogs are no longer admitted inside, unless an assistance dog and to quote the signage: “due to limited floor space”. In tribute to the new name, Trigger’s Broom, a full-size wall-hung broom is prominently displayed on an internal wall and there is a sizeable sculpture of Trigger, the character from tv sitcom, Only Fools and Horses, standing with his broom on an upturned hogshead barrel on the pavement outside as you come in. There is also an array of framed old postcards of Broadstairs adorning the interior walls and an old-fashioned jukebox is positioned in the corridor leading to the two WCs. On the covered window above the entrance door is a line-drawing of Trigger proudly holding his broom to attention and wearing his medal from Peckham Council for being recognised for saving the council money in keeping and maintaining the exact same broom for 20 years, albeit that it had in that time 17 new heads and 14 new handles. As Trigger explained: "Look after your broom". By replacing the parts as they wore out, he believed he was maintaining a single, long-serving tool rather than ordering entirely new brooms. This micropub’s new name is a nod to carrying on the tradition established by the former Four Candles Alehouse. CONTINUES UNDER 1ST BEER ENTRY.

Milestone - Loxley Ale4.20Good1st beer of this visit: Very good head and lacing presented on this Cromwell-brewed English blonde/golden bitter from Nottinghamshire, just north of Newark, and where the brewery was set up in 2004. Here served on gravity dispense from the jacketed cask on racking behind the small bar counter. A dry bitter first sweep across my taste buds with a herbal freshness and subtle cedarwood spice. A hoppy bitterness rising from its British Challenger, behind its earthy flavours and subtle citrus and sweet floral hints, and Progress hops, behind its notes of honey and delicate dark fruits such as blackcurrant. A caramelised maltiness, likely to be from Maris Otter or Golden Promise malts, with a subtle honey grassy sweetness sweeping out. Served in fine fettle and superbly priced at just £4.50 a pint. CONTINUED FROM GENERAL COMMENTS ENTRY FOR THIS VISIT: The name of the Four Candles Alehouse was of course based on the Two Ronnies tv comedy sketch featuring Ronnie Barker asking, got any fork 'andles and being given four candles in error by Ronnie Corbett. The sketch is based on Harrington’s hardware shop in Broadstairs and opposite the Sonder pub and close to where Ronnie Corbett had a holiday flat and when Barker came to visit, he got his sketch ideas from nearby Harrington’s. In the case of Trigger’s Broom and the local connection, there was the wonderful Only Fools and Horses’ Christmas special, The Jolly Boys’ Outing, and which took them to nearby Margate by coach, and before they managed to blow it up, and featuring Trigger famously parading a blow-up dolphin around and including on his rides in Dreamland Amusement Park. AT THE TIME OF THIS VISIT, CURRENTLY SHUT ON WEDNESDAYS, OTHER WEEKDAYS OPEN FROM 3PM, AND WEEKENDS FROM 12 NOON.
Titsey - Leveson Buck3.70Good2nd beer of this visit: Very good head and lasting lacing presented on this IPA from Tatsfield, Surrey, and where brewing grew out of a farm shed at the nearby Botley Hill Farmhouse in 2017. Here served on one of the two handpumps on the bar counter from its cask in the cellar below. A fruity bitter first sweep across my taste buds. A bitterness bristling up from its traditional bittering hops, balanced by its malted barley, wheat and oats. Touches of grapefruit and citrus from its New World American hops, added later in the fermenting process, swishing on my palate. An apple-infused hoppy bitterness raking downwards with subtle hints of passionfruit. Served in very good nick.
