12:05 My first visit for some years. I used the right hand bar for the first time. Early doors so two of us in the right hand bar, three in the left hand and one in the Tudor room at the rear. Had fun matching the changes in the pub to the CAMRA Heritage description.
Marston's - Bass | 4.40 | | Lovely condition but sweet. |
Nethergate (was Nethergate Growler for a while then name reverted) - Suffolk County Best Bitter | 4.00 | Not Tried
Banks's - Young's London Original (was Bitter) - previously brewed in Bedford and at Wychwood | 3.70 | Not Tried
17 Jan 2013 (Martin the Mildman)
Visit by the Tuesday evening mild drinkers.
Vale - Black Swan Mild | 3.90 | | In top condition here with a full on malt flavour of chcolate and coffee. Some fruity hop in the finish to give a little balance. My score 16/20. |
Hook Norton - Hooky Mild | 2.80 | | Lower strength, but hasn't lost any flavour, full of malty flavours such as biscuit, toffee and chocolate. Virtually no hopping at all, just enough to give a hint of fruit in the finish. My score 16/20. |
Tring - Mansion Mild | 3.70 | | Dark brown with dryish malt flavour with hints of choclate malt. Some hop in the finish. My score 15/20. |

Great Friday evening atmosphere in this fine old London pub..
Marston's - Bass | 4.40 | | The best Bass in the country? Probably... |
Skinner's - Betty Stogs Bitter | 4.00 | Not Tried
Banks's - Young's London Original (was Bitter) - previously brewed in Bedford and at Wychwood | 3.70 | Not Tried
Thwaites - Original | 3.60 | Not Tried
09 Nov 2012 (Philip Pirrip)
This month's evening venue for our Friday evening group. I always enjoy coming here.
Marston's - Bass | 4.40 | | In fine condition but, of course, bears no seeming resemblence to the Burton snatch Bass of old |
Skinner's - Betty Stogs Bitter | 4.00 | Not Tried
Banks's - Young's London Original (was Bitter) - previously brewed in Bedford and at Wychwood | 3.70 | Not Tried
Thwaites - Original | 3.60 | Not Tried
14 Jul 2011 (Martin the Mildman)
A visit from the Thursday evening mild drinkers ensured the pub was very busy during the evening.
Elgood's - Black Dog Mild | 3.60 | | Sweetish malty flavours backed by a hint of liquorice and dark chooclate. Finish is fruity with hints of blackberries. My score 16/20. |
Dark Star - Over The Moon | 3.80 | | This is now far too hoppy to be classed as a mild! Very much in the style of a weak black IPA with lots of citrus cascade hop flavour. The colour is also lighter, more like a ruby/brown. Any caramel or roast malt flavours are now verymuch in the background. My score 15/20. |
Batemans - Dark Mild | 3.00 | | Quite a bitter sample, with a dryish fruity finish probably indicating it was served a little too fresh. My score 15/20. |
24 Feb 2011 (Martin the Mildman)
Mild on due to a visit from the Thursday evening mild drinkers.
Batemans - Dark Mild | 3.00 | | On form here with full bodied chocolatey maltiness and a slight tang in the finish. My score 16/20. |
12 Aug 2010 (Martin the Mildman)
Busy with a visit from the Thursday evening mild drinkers club.
Batemans - Dark Mild | 3.00 | | Good chocolate malt flavour, little hoppiness and a slightly dry finish. My score 16/20. |
Tring - Mansion Mild | 3.70 | | Malty mild with nutty flavours and quite a hoppy finish. My score 15/20. |
04 Mar 2010 (Martin the Mildman)
Wadworth - Henry's Original IPA | 3.60 | | Sweetish with a grainy malt character, little hop character to speak of. More like a light mild/boy's bitter than an IPA. My score 15/20. |
Rudgate - Ruby Mild | 4.40 | | Despite it being Champion Beer of Britain, I don't rate this mild particularly highly. It has too much bitterness, no sweet maltiness and too much hop in the finish. Pleasant enough dark bitter, but for mild - 14/20. |
17 Sep 2009 (Martin the Mildman)
Thursday night mild drinkers in attendance this evening so very busy.
Phoenix - Monkeytown Mild | 3.90 | | Malty dark mild with liquorice notes and quite a bitter chocolate finish. My score 15/20. |
Warwickshire - Darling Buds | 4.00 | | Fairly dry and bitter. My score 14/20. |
