This pub closed in June 2014.

Early evening. The pub is busy and very noisy; high music volumes forcing everybody to shout. Not entirely comfortable as a consequence.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Peerless - Down Under3.60Excellent
Wadworth - Orange Peel6.00GoodAmber-coloured. Strong and a bit sticky. Reeks of orange, but there is some offsetting hop character and I quite enjoyed this. So ‘good’, despite my feeling that it is rather unsubtle.
Portobello - Gold4.30GoodGolden. Bitter malt tastes. Blend of hop flavours.

Mid-evening visit and at 8:00 I was able to get a seat. Chatted to a few people who had been out to Manor Park to pay their respects to Bob Crow; a good man who will be much missed, perhaps the last of his kind.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Navigation - Ice Breaker4.00GoodExceptionally pale in colour. A little bit of hop character.
Andwell - Red IPA4.50AcceptableReddish-brown in colour. Sticky, caramelly, toffee malt dominates over any hop flavours from the mix of UK and US hops. For me, the balance is not right.

Relatively uncrowded at around 7pm and I even found a seat in the ground floor bar – a rare event here in the early evening.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Portobello - White4.80AcceptableA disappointing, hazy, pale, wheat beer that did not taste to its strength and had more than a hint of unwanted sourness.

The usual rush hour crush in here.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Rudgate - Zest is Best3.60GoodNot your typical Rudgate beer; this is pale gold in colour and has a lemony, zesty, citrusy flavour.

19 Jan 2013 (Martin the Mildman)
Full of diners on a Saturday afternoon.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Great Yorkshire (see also Cropton) - Yorkshire Lager4.20PoorNot a great advert for cask lager, insipid and tasteless. Fine for those who like beer with no flavour. My score 10/20.
10 Dec 2012 (Stephen Harris)
The early evening crush was beginning to die down by the time I popped in here for a quick one at around 7:30pm.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Brentwood - The Only Way is Santa5.20GoodOne of at least six different Christmas beers produced by Brentwood this year. Brown and malty and a little bit spicy but not over-poweringly so.

Very crowded in here at 7pm on a Wednesday.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Caledonian - Golden Sun4.30GoodAmber-coloured, dryish, grainy malt taste. Not bad.
Nethergate (was Nethergate Growler for a while then name reverted) - Basing Park4.20PoorA distinct taste of washing up liquid. I assume this came from the glass, rather than the beer. Short measure too. Will have to try again on another day.

This pub re-opened today after a brief closure for refurbishment. It’s so dark inside that it’s hard to see what has changed. But a strong smell of paint and deep horizontal creases across the bar staff’s crisp white shirts give clues to what is new. New prices too – guest beers up 10p to £3:65 a pint. Somebody has to pay for the paint and the shirts I suppose.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Cropton (see also Great Yorkshire) - Darkangel5.00GoodDark and rich and full of cherries, without descending into sweetness. Pretty good, but none of the flavours are as developed as in an earlier sample I tried of this beer.
Wold Top - Dawn O'Time4.00GoodAn amber/golden coloured bitter with a fruity Cristal Malt taste and some overlaying hops. Quite spritzy.

Rather dark inside and very busy. I get irritated when a beer has expired but the pump clip still faces the customers - that happened twice here.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Cropton (see also Great Yorkshire) - Elf Indulgence5.50PoorI tried and enjoyed this beer somewhere a couple of weeks ago. But this sample (luckily just a half) had a slight chemical taint and was unpleasant.
