8th stop of the outing to Oxted and its environs: Busy on arrival early evening as indeed all Spoons are. My last visit to a Spoons was at Maidenhead three weeks ago. One vacant table to be found and unless hovering to seize another. Strange that this Wetherspoon pub and the Oxted Royal British Legion Club are the only real ale establishments in the whole of Oxted itself and not including Old Oxted with just two pubs there offering a single choice of real ale in each. Strange indeed and given the local brews earlier in the day supped in all of the pubs in the more rural locations around Oxted. They were much enjoyed and recognised for being local and by sheer contrast, a restaurant/pub a stroll away from Old Oxted was offering an unrivalled six real ales. Met with prompt, friendly service as is customary in a Spoons and told the curry would only be some 10 minutes away which it was which certainly did not disappoint. 8 real ales on was impressive for an otherwise apathetic real ale town.

Wantsum - Becket's Brown Ale
4.50
This chestnut coloured brown ale from St Nicholas-at-Wade near Canterbury, Kent, and just within Thanet, and not far from Birchington-on-Sea where I was just up the road from at Ramsgate/Broadstairs for the Gadds’ Easter beer festival the Saturday before, came with superb head and lacing and lasting all the way. A very malty bitter first hit. A dry bitterness rising from the traditional English hop varieties used for their brown ales, namely East Kent Goldings aiding its bittering powers alongside earthy, honeyed, and spicy notes, and Challenger hops used alongside Goldings for its bittering finish with herbal hints. Touches of hazelnut, chocolate and coffee were afforded by its Crystal Malts, lending its sweetness, and Chocolate Malt behind its corresponding flavours. A malty note or two prevailing but a fruitiness doing battle assisted by hedgerow berries in on the mix. A dry bitterness paddling out. It suitably aided the curry on its downwards’ journey and the brown ale was in fine fetter!

Evening. Good to see several Hopdaemon beers here but the location advertises LocAle inside and there were none to be seen. I also concluded that the term Craft Ale or Craft Beer is a busted flush when I saw 'Spoon's selling 355ml cans of Sixpoint US beers as Craft Beer here (2 for a fiver).

Located in Station Road West. The pub is named after the town it is in, and it stands on the site of extensive railway sidings. The many clocks above the bar indicate the time in various cities around the world, a reference to Oxted's exact location on the Greenwich Meridian. 8 handpumps on the bar counter. Large outside verandah seating area.
We have visited this pub 5 times, seen 28 different beers and tried 6 of them.
