12:15 Came here as it is the current Essex CAMRA Pub of the Year. Very busy both in and in the extensive courtyard garden. Quite surprising for a Tuesday lunchtime. Really liked the pub but was disappointed by the beers on offer.

Early evening visit and a good crowd in. This pub is recently named as Colchester CAMRA Pub of the Year.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Colchester - Pontisbright4.20ExcellentA dark red-brown beer with US hop flavours on a solid malt background.
Hellhound - Twisted Sister3.50GoodGolden. Described as a ‘Champagne Beer’. Bitter, a bit yeasty, citrusy.
Farmer's Ales (Maldon Brewing) - Puck's Folly4.20Not Tried
Rudgate - York Chocolate Stout5.00Not Tried
Bishop Nick - Dark Mild3.70Not Tried

I have walked past this pub dozens of times over the years without going in, but today it proved a nice place to re-group with my friends after a very disappointing football match at Colchester United.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Harwich Town - Bay Blonde3.60GoodGolden and very bitter.
Bishop Nick - SPA4.80GoodSo far as I know, Bishop Nick beers continue to be brewed at Felstar Brewery. This was a pleasant, brown, best bitter with toffee undertones.
Crouch Vale - Black6.00AcceptableI didn’t much care for this. Black in colour, it has a strong alcohol taste but is oddly lacking in body. It is possible that this sample was suffering from being close to barrel-end.
Farmer's Ales (Maldon Brewing) - Puck's Folly4.20Not Tried
Great Heck - Yakima IPA7.40Not Tried

The pub is found in Colchester, Essex, CO1 1RB.

This pub was established in around 1860 and was originally tied to the Colchester Brewing Company, before that brewery fell to Ind Coope in the 1930s. It is an attractive, seventeenth century building that was saved from demolition in the redevelopments of the 1970s. The pub struggled for trade for a long time, but was revitalised under new landlords in 2012, with much more of a focus on real ale and cider. There is a central bar, with a variety of seating opportunities all around, and a rear courtyard. Local CAMRA branch Pub of the Year for 2013. CAMRA Essex Pub of the Year 2014.

We have visited this pub 7 times, seen 29 different beers and tried 11 of them.
