Mid-afternoon visit and the pub is quiet. A small group of office workers are firing off occasional e-mails on their Blackberries to give the impression thay are at work. Exterior redecoration is in progress and has reveled glazed tiles on the ground floor fascia with “TRUMANS –TOUT ------ER”. I remember a time when one of the gaps was filled with the word ‘MILD’.

The pub is found in Aldgate, Central London, E1 8AZ.
This pub was present by 1869 and was rebuilt in its present form in around 1880. Traditionally this was a Truman’s Brewery house, passing to Scottish & Newcastle and acquired by Shepherd Neame in 2004. During the 1980s and 1990s there was a very large extension into the former office premises next door. This is now lost and operates as a very successful restaurant, leaving the pub as a much smaller, two-bar establishment, with a pleasant and unexpected rear garden.
We have visited this pub twice, seen 5 different beers and tried 4 of them.
