| Shepherd Neame - Master Brew Bitter | 3.70 | ![]() | Presented with very good head and lacing on this mid-brown to auburn-amber hued bitter from Faversham*. It needed a top-up due to its frothy head; its lacing lasting to the end. A dry hoppy first bite. A gentle malty note rising aided by its British Pale Ale, Crystal, and Brown malted barley, lending it the merest hint of biscuit and toffee. A hoppy and lightly fruited bitterness winning over with a hint of caramel, spice and nuts, before sliding down. It was being ably helped out by its exclusively Kentish hops, primarily Admiral and Target for bittering, and Goldings added in the brewing’s final stages. Slightly thin on flavouring I thought but was otherwise in very good nick. *It was made by all accounts using one of the UK's last remaining solid oak mash tuns, referring to the brewing vessel used for two primary functions: converting starches into sugar and filtering the resulting liquid. It is where the milled grains (grist) are mixed with hot water to create a porridge-like mixture called the "mash". |

The pub is found in Ightham, Kent, TN15 9HH.
The George & Dragon, owned and run by Shepherd Neame, located in the picturesque village of Ightham, Kent, dates to 1515 and is striking for its 16th-century Tudor black-and-white timber-framed façade. Its interior features low ceilings, exposed beams, and on your left as you come in from the front is a collection of old black and white photographs of this historic coaching house adorning the walls. Serves British classics, fresh seafood specials, and a popular Sunday roast. Reviewers often highlight the fish and chips and moules. Outside at the rear is a terrace with seating area and a large rear car park. Just two real ales on, on our visit in May 2026 from Shepherd Neame. The George & Dragon was where according to local legend Guy Fawkes hatched his infamous Gunpowder Plot and was later captured after fleeing London.
We have visited this pub once, seen 2 different beers and tried 1 of them.
