16 Jul 2020 (Stephen Harris)
Lunchtime visit for a quick pint and use of the facilities. A one-way system in place. Quite a few City types indulging in pavement drinking outside and being loud. Just a hint that some normality is returning.

None of my friends had been in here since the O’Neill’s era and they duly noted the improvement. A bit too much City excess going on for comfort though. Limited beer range for a Nicholson.

A sensible decision to ditch the rather tired O’Neill’s branding for a more contemporary Nicholson’s one. Quite busy on an early Monday evening.

Early evening visit and there is a reasonable Monday night after-work crowd in.

The pub is found in City, Central London, EC4N 5AA.

A fairly well-preserved street corner pub close to Cannon Street station. It was built in around 1830 as the Sugar Loaf and for most of its history has been a Charrington’s house. By the1970s it was operating with two barely distinguishable bars, the Saloon and the Saloon Bar and in the 1980s it was known as a rare outlet for gravity-dispensed Bass. In 1999 the name was changed to incorporate the pub into the O’Neill’s chain of pretend Irish pubs. By 2013 there was little sign of the fake-Irishness remaining except for the pub name, which lingered on until November 2014 when the name reverted to Sugar Loaf and the pub was incorporated into the Nicholson’s chain. There are two almost separate bars, each with its own servery. Much of the walls and the ceiling have matchboard and there is a mix of tiled, carpeted and stone-flagged floor.

We have visited this pub 4 times, seen 9 different beers and tried 4 of them.
