Third stop: This was once again, after our picturesque walk back from Sheet via Steep's Harrow Lane, a welcome find. This former shop-like premises now runs mainly as a foody place but highlights it appreciates and supports the local breweries which is good to read. It has 3 handpumps and on our visit two real ales were on from Triple fff Brewery set up in 1997 and based in Four Marks, Hampshire, south-west of Alton and north-west of Petersfield. Could almost be a micro with some 9 KeyKegs on as well but perhaps too large a premises and also does hot food both lunchtime and evenings and opens mid-morning for coffee. Ticking over on our late afternoon visit on the inside and in its rear courtyard with a few groups out there on seating around tables. Our group of three, armed with our real ales, sat at a table outside. Warm prompt service and pleased to see the two local casks on.

| Triple fff - Moondance | 4.20 | | Head and lacing, very good, and lasting, good, on this Hampshire best bitter from Four Marks. A dry fruity first bite. A moreish bitterness rising and a hoppiness winning over aided by its American Cascade hops. A fruit-infused hoppiness sailing off into the sunset. This one follows one of Triple fff's original recipes and has been brewed since the outset in 1997. Badged as a bitter, it is also referred to as a pale ale on the brewery's website. So, perhaps for want of a better description, it should be called a pale bitter? Pleasantly bitter it was for me alongside its pervading hoppy sweetness. It was accoladed by CAMRA as their Supreme Champion Beer of Britain, attaining Bronze, in the Great British Beer Festival of 2006 and this was achieved alongside some 22 other awards. |

My fourth visit of the day's outing: After beating my hasty retreat from the rather raucous Annie Jones French restaurant and cocktail bar visit, and only there as was on CAMRA's WhatPub entries for real ale, this was a welcome find. It is even described as a pub on the high street and with 3 handpumps on although looks like a former shop premises. Could almost be a micro but perhaps a touch too large and also does hot food both lunchtime and evenings and opens mid-morning for coffee. 9 fonts are also given a mention and so no doubt the odd KeyKeg on that as well. It was quiet both on the inside and in its rather appealing rear courtyard with just a few groups out there on seating around tables and which I headed for. Warm prompt service at the bar for my early evening visit and not disappointed by two local casks on. One was what I had just had in the Annie Jones and so the other caught my fancy.

| Langham - Triple XXX | 4.40 | | A new brewery to me on this visit but has been around since 2005 and a rare mild that you seldom see in the average drinking hole. It is from Lodsworth, almost directly east of Petersfield, and west of Petworth, the latter of which is part of its Google address for the brewery and taproom. Described as being from its core range of beers, it is intended to be on from September to March, and no doubt to reflect it being called a dark chocolate malty winter mild ale. It was presented with a very good head and lacing and which lasted throughout and for me was probably the second best real ale of the day so far. A dry malty first hit. A moreish bitter maltiness pervading the palate. A prevailing malt note or two lingering alongside an appealing dryness to be sure. Perfect! |
