29 May 2017 (Bear & Ragged Staff)
I have been visiting this pub for several years. Always a good welcome, always superb beer and overall 'one of the best pubs in the world....ever'!
BeerABVScoreNotes
Rat - White Rat4.00ExcellentStill one of the best of this style. Always worth a pint when its on the bar.
Big Smoke - Solaris Session Pale3.80ExcellentMy beer of the day. So many wonderful flavours at such a low ABV.
Rat - Rattus Norvegicus4.50ExcellentDark, citrussy and smooth. Superb.
Silver Brewhouse (formerly Raw) - Independence American Pale Ale4.10ExcellentA good pale ale with a depth of flavour and a good bitter hit on the finish.
25 May 2017 (Bear & Ragged Staff)
Always a special treat to come and visit one of my favourite pubs. Sat outside in the beer garden on this summer's day. Lots of like minded people.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Hafod - Hopper4.30GoodSome citrus fruits, a bit grassy and some light malt. Good refreshing beer. Excellent condition and presentation, as always.
Totally Brewed - Papa Jangles Voodoo Stout4.50GoodIf this beer was any more laid back, its bum would fall off. This was smooooth!
Salopian - Chicane4.10GoodDidn't stay in the glass long enough to make any tasting notes. Its purpose was to slake a thirst, and it served that purpose.
04 Jan 2015 (Bear & Ragged Staff)
Quiet room, good book and great beer. Best ever way to spend a winter's Sunday afternoon.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Wild Beer Co. - Bibble4.20ExceptionalThis beer is unfined and as a consequence remains hazy throughout. A hint of malt leads to a medley of tropical fruits and an orange finish. Just when you think it's all over, you are overwhelmed with a satisfying and lasting bitterness. Crisp, fresh and well balanced. An absolute masterpiece.
Vale of Glamorgan (VOG) - Red Myst4.20GoodQuality, copper coloured bitter.
Big Shed - Ruby Special Bitter4.60GoodInstead of a traditional bitter, this tasted more like a porter. Nevertheless, a pleasant surprise.
21 Dec 2014 (Bear & Ragged Staff)
What a wonderful experience - all three rooms packed and Christmas carols ringing out. Great to see a pub still at the heart of the local community.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Rat - White Rat4.00ExcellentOne of the best of its type.
McGivern Ales - Winter Wonder Ale5.20ExcellentDark and fruity.
Slater's - Blitzen4.00GoodA ruby red ale with some surprising malt characteristics.
Axiom - New Dawn4.20GoodGolden, malty and hoppy.
14 Dec 2014 (Bear & Ragged Staff)
Cold, wet and wretched outside. Warm, welcoming and friendly inside.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Dunham Massey - Big Tree Bitter3.90ExcellentSuperb malty bitter.
Pied Bull - Unforgiva Bull6.00ExcellentNot for the faint hearted.
McGivern Ales - Jigsaw4.50GoodA cross between a traditional bitter and a pale ale. Typical soft flavours.
Abbeydale - Dr Morton's Spell Checker4.10GoodCrisp and sharp. Great condition and presentation.
06 Dec 2014 (Bear & Ragged Staff)
Don't get much opportunity to visit anymore, so when the chance arises it is a must. Friendly and busy as always. Long may it continue.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Pied Bull - Unforgiva Bull6.00ExcellentAn IPA as an IPA should be. Packed with luxurious flavours, toffee apple, maramalade, and good malt. Usual superb condition and presentation.
Rudgate - Ruby Mild4.40GoodIf only all mild beerss were this good.
Salopian - Lemon Dream4.50GoodTypically Salopian.
Brewster's - Charnsters Gold (collaboration with Charnwood)3.80GoodEasy drinking golden ale.
09 Nov 2014 (Bear & Ragged Staff)
First visit for two or three weeks. Unfortunately couldn't stay for the commemorative music in the afternoon. Usual great quality and assortment of real ales.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Hopcraft (experimental side of Pixie Spring) - Day of the Lords4.80ExcellentWow! Grapefruity bitter! Excellent condition and presentation.
Dunham Massey - Stamford Bitter4.20ExcellentWhat a delight. A supreme bitter packed with flavour. Good body, great presentation and top condition. A tribute to both brewer and publican.
McGivern Ales - Jigsaw4.50GoodAnother quality pale with soft flavours.
Buzzard - Old Buzzard5.30GoodI suppose this should be classified as a strong ale. Whatever, it was a very nice all round beer that will suit most palates.
12 Dec 2013 (Bear & Ragged Staff)
First weekday off for ages. What better way to finish it off than a few good pints in pleasant, relaxing surroundings.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Hobsons - Best Bitter3.80ExcellentFabulous malty bitter. Usual good presentation and condition.
Salopian - Oracle4.00ExcellentBest Oracle I've ever had. Six months ago this would have been exceptional but there are newer beers in the same genre that I prefer.
Hawkshead - Windermere Pale (was 3.5%)3.40ExcellentFull on pale bitter. So much taste at 3.5%. Superb condition and presentation.
Sandstone - Citrine6.30GoodGood, but I can't help thinking that the flavour is compromised for strength.
08 Dec 2013 (Bear & Ragged Staff)
Good Sunday afternoon session.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Rudgate - Battle Axe4.20ExcellentChestnut in colour, nutty and fruity all in good balance followed with a tangy, bitter finish. Excellent.
Elland - Beyond the Pale4.20GoodClassic pale ale, superb condition.
Tatton - Tatton Best4.20GoodStandard bitter on good form
Dunham Massey - Green Hop Beer4.10GoodFresh and light with good hop characteristics.
23 Nov 2013 (Bear & Ragged Staff)
Some good chat with like minded beer enthusiasts. Pleasant couple of hours.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Rat - White Rat4.00ExceptionalStill top dog. Full of flavour, consistently superb and in great condition.
Rat - Rat In Me Kitchen4.00ExceptionalWow, another stunning ale from the Rat brewery. Usual superb condition and presentation. A beer of the citrus style but with so much more going on, floral, perfumed and citrus flavours all well balanced and with good body. Difficult to believe it was only 4.0% ABV. Straight into my top ten.
Hop Studio - Obsidian5.00GoodBlack and typical of its style. Obviously a well crafted beer bit I wouldn't want more than a pint in any one session.
Buzzard - Vale Ale4.50GoodPleasant all rounder. Superb condition and presentation.
