Mid afternoon just one other customer in the right hand bar which is the place to drink in this pub. No pushchair brigade as per my previous visit just a calm relaxed atmosphere to sup one's pint. Smell of cooking from the lunchtime trade was my only gripe.

Late afternoon Easter Sunday very badly timed visit with a horde of Brighton hippies crowding the entrance, standing room only around the bar and parents with screeching children in the other rooms. Ho hum.

Evening. Went here for old time's sake. Distinct smell of cooking seems to be prevalent here these days ruining its boozerness. The small front room now has etching style stickers on its doors "The Front Bar".

The big bus trip was over and homing instincts set in. When in Lewes this is a must visit though. Sat in the front snug bar but why oh why do they remove the little double privacy doors in Summer as it takes away the feeling of exclusivity.

I met up with the Ratebeer mob who were going on the Harvey's brewery tour here. We met up, had some lunch and then did a bit of a crawl of the town before going for the tour. We sat in the back room and chatted. Pleasant pub to while away a few hours.

Now run by Fullers with the experience of the people behind The Basketmakers Arms in Brighton. Not very busy so Chris and I sat at the bar in the front room chatting to the woman behind the bar about the pub and the latest festivities taking place in Lewes the following evening.

The pub is found in Lewes, East Sussex, BN7 1YH.
Deservingly famous pub at the foot of the castle hill on the east side. Made of flint stone and red brick. Curved frontage leads to a narrow central bar serving front (a small room with double doors which are sometimes taken off their hinges in summer) and rear rooms and a corridor hatch too. Larger games room is to the left. Upstairs you will find a door to the garden terrace. Famous some years ago when Greene King stopped selling Harveys Best Bitter here and locals (and other friends) carried out a lengthy campaign to get the beer restored to the bar including refusing to drink there at all and picketing outside. Greene King eventually relented but soon afterwards they sold the pub to Fuller's. 7 handpumps in total being a bank of 6 plus a singleton.
