Early evening and quite busy. Another chance to have a go at the Wetherspoon festival list.
Wychwood (now brewed at Banks's) - Nøgne Ø Brewery Nordic Noir | 4.50 | | A really nice Oatmeal Stout. Smooth and sweetish. Coffee and chocolate. Nice hops. |
Everards (see entries against Joule's & Robinsons whilst its new brewery was being built) - Two Birds Sunset Ale | 4.60 | | A very tasty, hoppy, Amber beer. I loved this. |
Marston's - Zululand Zulu Blonde | 4.50 | | A hint of nice flavours in here, but they are lost to flat condition and over-chilling. |
Greene King - IPA (was 3.6%) | 3.40 | Not Tried
Fuller's (part of Asahi Europe) - London Pride | 4.10 | Not Tried
Sharp's - Doom Bar | 4.00 | Not Tried
Rudgate - Battle Axe | 4.20 | Not Tried
JW Lees (see also Lees) - Drayman's Reward | 4.10 | Not Tried
Hook Norton - Fat Head's Yakima Sun | 5.00 | Not Tried
27 Oct 2014 (Stephen Harris)
Fairly quiet on a Monday evening.
Maxim - The Simcoe Kid | 4.50 | | Decent, golden, bitter, grapefruity hop beer. |
Moorhouse's - Black Cat Reserve | 4.60 | | Every bit as good as I was hoping this beer would be. |
Oakham - Great Gustav | 4.80 | | Pale gold in colour. Sweetish, with long bitter finish. |
Shepherd Neame - The Faversham Steam Brewery - Whitstable Bay Pale Ale | 3.90 | Not Tried
Vale - Metamorphosis | 4.50 | Not Tried
Batemans - Wicked Weed Freak of Nature | 7.50 | Not Tried

Not as packed as it can be in here – plenty of people applying ticks to their beer festival lists.
Wolf - Silver Fox | 4.60 | | I really enjoyed this. Well-executed, balanced, citrus-hoppy, pale ale. |
Banks's - Young Henrys Real Ale | 4.00 | | Amber-coloured and very nice. This beer went some way to restoring my faith in the Wetherspoon’s concept of brewery collaboration. And I do like the idea of a very English-style bitter brewed with exotic hops. |
Mauldons - Lemon Adder | 4.00 | | Amber-coloured. Very lemony; too unsubtle for me. |
Greene King - IPA (was 3.6%) | 3.40 | Not Tried
Fuller's (part of Asahi Europe) - London Pride | 4.10 | Not Tried
Hanlons (formerly O'Hanlon's) - Half Moon | 4.00 | Not Tried
Hawkshead - El Dorado | 5.00 | Not Tried
27 Mar 2014 (Stephen Harris)
Early evening and the pub is very busy for curry night and the start of the spring Wetherspoon’s beer festival.
Wychwood (now brewed at Banks's) - Cigar City Brewing Siren's Song Session IPA | 5.00 | | Amber. Well-hoppy and satisfying. |
Brains - White Out | 4.00 | | Golden. Hazy, bordering on cloudy. A Belgian-style Witbier, with orange zest and coriander flavours. Plus a noticeable new world hop load. I continue to have doubts about hoppy wheat beers, so a ‘good’ from me rather than an ‘excellent’. |
Beer Studio (Hydes sub-brand) - Dark Odyssey | 4.40 | | A dark, smooth, malty beer. |
Wadworth - Klosterbrauerei Scheyern Kloster Bock Dunkel | 6.50 | | This is not as good as it should be. Dark and sweet and a bit thin. Does not taste 6.5%. Perhaps it was a duff pint? |
Greene King - IPA (was 3.6%) | 3.40 | Not Tried
Greene King - Abbot | 5.00 | Not Tried
Banks's - Czech Mate | 4.40 | Not Tried
14 Oct 2013 (Stephen Harris)
The list for the forthcoming Wetherspoon beer festival looks more enticing than any from the last year or two, and I looked in here to see if any of the special beers were yet available. I was rewarded by finding a good ‘un.
Adnams - Stone Brewing Supremely Self-Conscious Black Ale | 5.00 | | A really good interpretation of the Black IPA style. An initial, intense, hop hit, followed by a dryish roast barley undercurrent. |
Itchen Valley - Tea Clipper | 4.20 | | Amber coloured and dry. Very dry. Is it meant to be this dry? |
Greene King - IPA (was 3.6%) | 3.40 | Not Tried
Fuller's (part of Asahi Europe) - London Pride | 4.10 | Not Tried
Greene King - Abbot | 5.00 | Not Tried
Portobello - Star | 4.30 | Not Tried
Portobello - Market Porter | 4.60 | Not Tried

The rolling Wetherspoon’s festival of London brewers has reached the City. It is very busy in here – standing room only – and they are putting a good effort into the festival, with several beers on and plenty of promotional material.
Portobello - Market Porter | 4.60 | | Dark, rich and malty. Bit of chocolate and coffee and some hop presence. |
Clarence & Fredericks - Smoked Red | 5.10 | | Golden-red in colour. Heavily dominated by a strong peaty, smoky taste. Too one-dimensional in my view. |
Greene King - IPA (was 3.6%) | 3.40 | Not Tried
Fuller's (part of Asahi Europe) - London Pride | 4.10 | Not Tried
Greene King - Abbot | 5.00 | Not Tried
Redemption - Urban Dusk | 4.60 | Not Tried
East London (ELB) - Foundation Bitter | 4.20 | Not Tried
Portobello - Star | 4.30 | Not Tried
11 Dec 2012 (Martin the Mildman)
Adnams - Gunhill | 4.00 | | Ruby coloured mild style ale, sweetish, malty and fruity. My score 15/20. |
13 Nov 2012 (Martin the Mildman)
Adnams - English Red Ale | 4.50 | | A perfect example of the style, sweet maltiness without being cloying with a good balance of hop bitterness. Fruity and malty finish. My score 16/20. |
Vale - Gunpowder | 5.20 | | Strong red ale with a full bodied malty flavour. Some sweetness mainly from malt, the hop character is less defined. My score 15/20. |
06 Nov 2012 (Martin the Mildman)
Not too busy mid evening on a Tuesday.
Harviestoun - Wild Hop Gold | 4.00 | | Light gold in colour with a good balance of hop and sweetish malt with hints of toffee and biscuit. Hop bitterness coming through in the finish. My score 15/20. |
Mordue - Lubelski | 4.50 | | A hoppy pale bitter with good crisp hop bitterness and a good malt base. Dryish hop finish. My score 15/20. |
Brewster's - Andromeda | 4.80 | | Strong golden bitter with a good fruity hop character and a full bodied flavour. My score 15/20. |
31 Oct 2012 (Stephen Harris)
This is not one of my favourite pubs; a large, awkwardly-shaped, mostly subterranean bar in one of the City’s ugliest office blocks. But I popped in early evening as part of my feeble attempt to work my way down the Wetherspoon beer festival list.
Butcombe - Adam Henson's Rare Breed (superseded by 3.8% version - see separate entry) | 4.20 | | Amber-coloured. A best bitter, nicely balanced, with good malt flavour and an English hop character. |
Weltons - Autumn Shades | 4.40 | | Gold-coloured. This pint totally dominated by a thick, buttery taste, and nearly dropping to two stars. |
Moorhouse's - Ruby Witch | 4.60 | Not Tried
Box Steam - Ghost Train | 4.80 | Not Tried
Jersey (now called Liberation) - Liberation Rouge | 4.50 | Not Tried
Adnams - Avery 3 Point 5 Session Ale | 3.50 | Not Tried
Rooster's - Franklin | 4.30 | Not Tried
