I had a pint each of the 3 stouts whilst watching day 3 of the England vs West Indies Test Match.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Porter House - Wrasslers5.00ExcellentVery good dry Irish stout, and quickly becoming my favourite of the 3 stouts here.
Porter House - Plain Porter4.30GoodFine, could have sunk a few of these.
Porter House - Oyster Stout4.80AcceptableBit too rich for me this time round.
21 Apr 2007 (Ian)
Got here around half past five I guess. Heaving as always, but the basement bar wasn't too bad. Also bought myself a bottle of the Celebration Stout which is an imperial stout with huge intense malts and wopping great big hit of hops on the end. And it's 10% ABV
BeerABVScoreNotes
Porter House - Wrasslers5.00GoodFine, but didn't have its usual intensity
Porter House - Chocolate Truffle Stout5.00GoodEnormously choc velvet. I mean it's like drinking a Belgian choc truffle chocolate. Question is, is it any good? Well there are 2 answers. The choc loving part of me says, "Yes, this is the most intense choc beer I've ever had and I love it." The beer purest would say "It's a bit thin and grainy and it's a bit crude after half a pint and you wouldn't want much more."

This was heaving late on a Saturday night. Still one of my favourite places for a fast half before getting the train from Charing Cross though.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Porter House - Hersbucker Pilsner5.00GoodReally sharp hop bite on finish, leafy refreshing lager.

We had a few minutes spare before we had to get the train from Charing Cross so what better than a half in the Porter House! It was fairly quiet.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Porter House - Plain Porter4.30ExcellentIce cold, umm not sure that's a good thing but anyway... Slightly creamy and fizzy mouth feel. Loads of burnt sweetness with a slight milkyness to it. The finish was of sweeter malt with a tight burnt bitterness to it.

Late Saturday afternoon, early evening. I was in the basement bar standing at the bar as there were very few free seats. Good atmosphere and the bar staff were very good. The beers seemed to be in absolute peak condition. After a couple of so-so visits, this restored my faith in this pub. By the time I left the area outside the front doors was heaving with very happy customers.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Porter House - Plain Porter4.30ExceptionalWhen you have this when it's good, it's stunning. Bitter choc, good malts, but creamy and drinkable. Flavour is bitter choc and cream. Brilliant
Porter House - Wrasslers5.00ExceptionalVery bitter stout. Great cherry fruits. Really bitter and intense
Porter House - Oyster Stout4.80ExcellentRich, almost whiskyish aroma. Very rich in mouth, not much sourness, some bitter choc. Smooth, creamy in mouth. Rather lovely and intense
Porter House - Hersbucker Pilsner5.00ExcellentWithout doubt (in my opinion) the most interestingly hopped lager in the UK, except it's from Eire. Woody intense bitter hop dominates a pale malt lager. Stunning.
Porter House - An Brain Blasta7.00GoodLike the Thomas Hardy Ale and the Sarah Hughes Ruby Mild I had earlier this is very malty. The malt here is tempered by a good dosing of hop. Still alcoholic and malty. Hop finish is in fact quite harsh, but doesn't alleviate the rich malt and alcohol. Coffee/choc/syrupy malt aroma and in mouth with some sweetish berry fruit. Hit of harsh hop on end. Sweet tangerine in there too.

Quite busy as usual on a late Saturday afternoon. The beer quality can actually be quite variable considering they are all served on tap. The oyster stout is always a favourite though.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Porter House - Red Ale4.40AcceptableToo cold to get a good aroma, but I was assured by the others I was with that it smelt of sweaty shoes. Some red berry fruit, not a lot of other flavour. Creamy and a bit bland
Porter House - Vienna Dark Lager5.00AcceptableRed/copper with lasting beige head. Some smokey fruit and malt. Some choc. Weird artificial red fruit. Overly carbonated. Cherry dry finsh. Interesting

Late on a Wednesday evening. Went downstairs to the basement bar as there was a 3 piece band on. They were very good and had a group of female customers dancing in front of the bar. Only had time for a couple. Cover version of The Eagles, Hotel California was excellent
BeerABVScoreNotes
Porter House - Plain Porter4.30AcceptableA bit dull, flat and lifeless on this visit I am afraid
Porter House - Oyster Stout4.80AcceptableBit more flavour than the plain, but still had better here. Strange that the beer quality can be so variable when they have everything under their control
08 Oct 2005 (Ian)
Busy as usual on a Saturday afternoon with the England vs Austria football on the screens. Still got a seat at the bar though. Came here as I saw that their Oktoberfest was on.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Paulaner - Hefeweissbier5.30GoodDark gold hazy thich beige head. Bubblegum nose some banana. Bit of toffee malt. Finish is very dry with more bubblegum
Porter House - Kolsch4.40AcceptableGolden beer with thin white head. Grainy nose, bit of sourness in mouth some citrus lemon and drying hops. Good kolsch, very refreshing
Paulaner - Oktoberfest6.00AcceptablePale gold colour, with thin white head. Herby, hop nose, lager style body with some deadish malt. Finish has more herby dry hop which is quite aggressive

As always fairly busy on a late Saturday afternoon, but we were lucky and got a table. Ate there for the first time and the oysters were excellent and the burger was extremely filling. Oyster stout was a hit with the oysters and the world bottled beers are still a major asset if a little on the expensive side
BeerABVScoreNotes
Porter House - Oyster Stout4.80ExceptionalThis is just so rich. Goes wonderfully well with oysters and both me and my guest were very impressed with the combination. Silky velvet with an exuberant luxurious richness
Porter House - Plain Porter4.30ExcellentSmooth creamy elegant and one of my favourite porters
Porter House - Hersbucker Pilsner5.00AcceptableI know we don't normally rate lagers, but the beers from the Porter house are all worthy of note I feel. Pale godl, good hop nose, bit thin in mouth, well carbonated, but nice tang of the hops on the finish. Better than the average lager
11 Jun 2005 (Ian)
Late on a Saturday evening. There was a 2 man covers band in the basement bar who played a mixture of adult orientated rock but got the usual crowed of 25-35 somethings jumping with Teenage Dirtbag. All the usual Porterhouse beers were on, so I went through the stouts
BeerABVScoreNotes
Porter House - Plain Porter4.30GoodVery drinkable creamy smooth porter
Porter House - Wrasslers5.00GoodBit more oomph than the plain. Too be honest I was a bit past my best and they all melted into one drink
Porter House - Oyster Stout4.80GoodAgain normally I find this beer very distinctive, but too be honest I was having such a good time with the band and the eastern european girls dancing in front of me, I kind of did not notice what I was drinking
