Late afternoon - a few drinkers in. Bar person wasn't put off by my derogatory comment about the ubiquitous Doom Bar and told me the story of the Burnap's Beard brew - named after a local philanthropist who has donated a 4 figure sum for a beer named after him with 10p a pint also going to the bone marrow transplant charity.

For a midweek lunchtime visit it there were a few in the bar and restaurant area. We had a tasty meal and I particularly enjoyed the home-made steak and ale pie.

There were a few people inside, like myself and my wife, but many more outside enjoying the sunny warm day when we visited at lunchtime. We had a very good meal and usual attentive service. It was interesting to see 4 real ales on.

I still refer to this place as the Victoria although it has not officially been called that for about forty years or more. This was towards the end of a very sunny day and the garden area by the river was producing a lot of trade although the inside was busy as well. I checked the railway timetable and found that I had time to savour one pint comfortably without a rush.

Busy when we arrived both inside and out at lunchtime, but we were served well and had a good meal. Just before we finished a steady stream of cyclists arrived, who had obviously forewarned the landlord, for buffet food appeared for them.
