Evening. Last time I came here it seemed the most expensive non Spoon's, non-Sam Smith's pub in central London and went off my radar. Now it seems one of the cheapest at £3.30 and £3.45 pp.

Note that the correct name of this pub is Ship & Shovell, the second ā€˜lā€™ in Shovell reminding us that it is named (these days at least) for Admiral Sir Cloudesley Shovell. I have a long history with this pub, having been a lunchtime regular here for a while in the late-1980s, when people still went to the pub at lunchtime. Only the old part is open today, and it is populated by damp and bedraggled families clutching limp Union flags on little plastic sticks.

First time visit to this place for me, we chose the smaller bar as it looked to be slightly calmer. All the seats were taken but just as we paid for our drinks a table became free, which was really appreciated after all the walking. In hindsight I think the opposite side of the road is probably a better choice as I imagine it has more atmosphere. Definitely a pub I'd come back to though.

Badger (Hall & Woodhouse) - Hopping Hare4.40GoodI thought this was pretty good actually. Fruity golden ale that disappeared pretty quick.

Badger (Hall & Woodhouse) - Lemony Cricket4.40GoodSurpisingly good bronze coloured beer with a citrus taste and subtle hint of lemongrass. My score 15/20.

What a difference the smoking ban makes to pubs like this. I can actually taste the beer in here now.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Badger (Hall & Woodhouse) - Stinger4.50GoodVery pleasant slightly sharp bitter. Very drinkable and in good condition. The extra nettle gives the citrus hop a real zing on the finish. Use of lined glass as well which was a pleasant change.

I love bringing people here for the first time, they really seem to enjoy it and it is a good place to pick up most of the Badger beers.

The pub is found in Charing Cross, Central London, WC2N 5PH.

In Craven Passage virtually underneath Charing Cross main line railway station it is unusual in being on two sides of the street with the cellar linking the two sides below. On the north side is a medium sized Victorian pub whilst across the way the snug bars and alcoves of the smaller pub. The main bar has long narrow mirrors all along one wall with an L shaped counter with 7 handpumps in banks of 3 and 4. The smaller bar has various alcoves and niches and has 4 handpumps. Named after Admiral of the Fleet Sir Cloudesley Shovell.

We have visited this pub 17 times, seen 16 different beers and tried 9 of them.
