Visits Details

10 Oct 2013 (Ray)
Composite record from 10th to 13th October. Prices seemed to have moved quite sharply (up) since last visit. Disappointing to see so many Marston's beers which seem to sell so slowly compared to say Salopian or Sadlers.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Purple Moose - Dark Side of the Moose4.60ExcellentSurprised myself. An excellent strong and fruity mild. Went well with hot chestnuts.
Sadler's (see also Windsor Castle entry) - JPA3.80ExcellentAnother day in the cask and the Citra hops shone through.
Marston's - Burton Bitter3.80Good
Salopian - Shropshire Gold3.80GoodDark gold, fruity hoppy.
Sadler's (see also Windsor Castle entry) - JPA3.80GoodServed appley and green.
Purple Moose - Ysgawen4.00GoodYoung pretender to early Trade Winds.
Ringwood - Shipyard Brewing Co Independence Pale Ale4.10PoorActually OK but marked down for being £3.60 a pint on keg. Tried this in cask at around £2.40. Someone (Mr. Marston??) is exploiting the craft keg bandwagon.

06 May 2013 (Ray)
Great bar on the Ffestiniog Railway platform in Porthmadog. Strong local following topped by enthusiastic visitors. This log notes beers seen between 3rd and 6th May.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Sadler's (see also Windsor Castle entry) - JPA3.80ExcellentTop quality modern pale ale.
Marston's - Burton Bitter3.80GoodTrue to type. Bitter, slightly sulphurous, moreish.
St Austell - Tribute4.20GoodWorkmanlike bitter.
Sadler's (see also Windsor Castle entry) - JPA3.80GoodNot quite ready but still sold out in a session.
Purple Moose - Snowdonia Ale (Cwrw Eryri)3.60AcceptableI've a feeling that the yeast changed a couple of years ago and don't get on so well with beers now though others disagree. This I found to be thin and slightly astringent - not much from the hops.
Greene King - IPA (was 3.6%)3.40Not Tried

BeerABVScoreNotes
Salopian - Oracle4.00Good
Black Country - BFG Bradley's Finest Golden4.20AcceptableAnother innocuous golden ale. A little sweet, limited hopping. Every brewer seems to need one in his portfolio.
Wye Valley - HPA (Hereford Pale Ale)4.00AcceptableThin but improving as the cask emptied.
Adnams - Southwold Bitter3.70AcceptableTo be honest I was expecting more from this traditional mid-brown bitter.

28 Apr 2012 (Ray)
Week 23-29 April. Not a good week so far for beer choice. Beer of the week: Bristol Beer Factory Southville Hop (bottle).
BeerABVScoreNotes
Sadler's (see also Windsor Castle entry) - JPA3.80GoodA little young - will improve.
Sadler's (see also Windsor Castle entry) - JPA3.80GoodThat grapefruit zing was missing.
Banks's - Bitter3.80AcceptableUninspiring choice led me to this old faithful.
Ludlow - Gold4.20AcceptableRun of the mill golden ale with a slight metallic twang.
Marston's - Single Hop: Hallertau Mittelfruh4.00AcceptableIn three days went from 3* to 3.5* and back to 3*. Nothing to get excited about.

BeerABVScoreNotes
Sadler's (see also Windsor Castle entry) - JPA3.80GoodGood but a little tart.
Sadler's (see also Windsor Castle entry) - White Fire4.60GoodThis develped a depth of flavour as it aged in the cask which turned it from a nondescript golden ale to one with good chewy toffee flavours and solid malt.
Wye Valley - HPA (Hereford Pale Ale)4.00AcceptableTypically HPA - light in colour, thin in body and flavour.
