I got here at 11.30 and was the first one in the Saloon bar. Very friendly and helpful staff filled me in on the beer festival that they were having. 20 beers on in all plus some Belgians and cider. I really liked it. It had the feeling of a good local boozer with plenty of community activities going on.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Eastwood & Sanders - Maximum Darkness Stout4.30ExcellentVirtually black in colour with beige head. Really chewy, tarry. Lots of tarry malt, coffee, dark choc. The finish really makes you have to take a breath. Bit of wood in there? Even a bit smokey. It coats the gums like a good red wine
Hidden - Spring4.50ExcellentBrown/ruby with no head. Good malts. Really good fruit, strawberry jam like, bit of camp coffee. Really my kind of beer. Good intensity and excellent red berry fruit. Very jammy
Brown Cow - Malton After Dark Coffee Porter5.00ExcellentDark brown/ruby colour with bubbly beige head. Coffee and cereal aroma. Powdery coffee with touch of liquorice on end and a bit of sourness. Some dark juicy fruits. Bit of dark choc. Damsons/dark cherries on the fruit. Nice
Brouwerij Huyghe - Delirium Tremens9.00ExcellentRare to find this on draught in the UK. Golden, with sparse white head. Yeasty, almost raisiny grapey flavour. Wonderful. Doesn't taste its strength. Good golden beer. Love the citrus fruit and yeast flavours.
Phoenix - Pale Moonlight4.20GoodBit of a haze, but golden with very sparse head. US style hops on aroma, citrus and grapefruit. Fine in mouth if a bit watery. Served way too cold. Good hops on end. Lots of grapefruit but not too astringent
Burton Bridge - Springtime Ale (aka Spring Ale)4.70GoodGold/copper, thin off white head. Lemony citrus with floral hop. Quite full in mouth with bitter finish as well as hoppy. Some pear drop on finish. Yeah good beer.
RCH - Steam Spring4.60GoodGolden with lasting creamy white head. Good mouth feel, bit grainy. Nice beer. Fine hoppy aroma, really quite juicy in the mouth and with fine malts.
Downton - Chimera Gold4.30AcceptableGold with bubbly white head. Quite rich in mouth. Some butter/cream. Hops are fine if a little understated. Malt is a bit sweet
Abbeydale - Moonshine4.30AcceptablePale gold, really citric lemon aroma. Fine in mouth, juicy and then sharp astringent finish
Arran (formerly Isle of Arran) - Sunset4.40AcceptableCopper, thin white head. I really quite like the hops on this. Bit earthy/bit of citrus. Yeah good enough flavours. Not crystal clear.
Hydes - Best Bitter3.70AcceptableGolden with thin white head. Pretty bland, run of the mill bitter. Some yeast and hop on aroma, dry earthiness on end. Bit tingly on finish
Tower - Spring Equinox4.60AcceptablePale copper with sparse white head. Fairly standard British bitter, slightly more bitter than most. Fruit is quite good with white fruit flavours. Nice bitterness, sweet malt toffee
Triple fff - Stairway To Heaven4.30AcceptablePale copper colour with thin white head. Citric hop aroma with some caramel. Fullish in mouth. Hoppy dry dusty finish. Bit of juiciness from the malt. Bit of eggy yeast on aroma. Hops are nice though
Wold Top - Mars Magic4.60AcceptableBeer of the Beagle II Mars lander apparently. Chestnut colour with no head. Malty beer, but with good hop finish. A bit like Theakson XB used to be. Some dry malt on aroma, bit of coffee, but then flavours fade
Hydes - Heavenly Draught4.20AcceptableCopper colour, no head. Dull standard bitter, some yeast hop aroma. Bit astringent in mouth with bitter hoppy finish. Bit undistinguished
Tring - Tapster's Spring Ale4.00AcceptableCopper colour with citrusy aroma. Pretty much a fruity hoppy bitter, easy to sup and to be honest then forget
Stonehenge - Sign of Spring4.60PoorFairy liquid colour green. No head. No real aroma, bit of citrus. Just a bit of nothing. Bit of hop on finish. I got a bit bored of this and especially the garish green colour
