The Taphouse Bar is closed today, but the Brewhouse Bar is open, with a Vietnamese Barbeque and live jazz to come in the evening. Rather sparsely populated at 5pm though. A little disappointingly, only keg beers are available today.
BeerABVScoreNotes
London Fields - 3 Weiss Monkeys5.50ExcellentOn low-carbonation keg dispense. Described as a White IPA, this is mid-way between a Bavarian style wheat beer and a well-hopped bitter. It does seem to work.

The much-hyped and much-anticipated London’s Brewing Festival, hosted here this weekend. Many things were great about this festival – nice DIY venue, good food stalls, nice logo, great beer (100+ beers from 30 or so London breweries), an interesting programme of speakers, etc... But unfortunately it had been over-sold by two or three times. I managed to grab two halves soon after arriving. But by the time my friends arrived it had become seriously overcrowded. One of my friends became a little scared in the crush and we left before either of them had been able to get a drink (queuing times were said to be 30 minutes plus by now anyway). A real shame how this festival turned out, having promised so much.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Five Points - Railway Porter4.80ExcellentBlack, rich, chocolaty porter.
Pressure Drop - Builders4.30ExcellentFirst time I have seen a Pressure Drop beer on cask dispense. This is an interesting, black porter, flavoured with tea.

Lunchtime visit for the re-opening of the Taphouse Bar after its winter break. In fact, as we were three of the first ten through the door, we were given the first round on the house. Four cask beers available and a long list of keg and bottled specialities.
BeerABVScoreNotes
London Fields - Shoreditch Triangle IPA6.00ExcellentIPA that is now a permanent part of the beer range, and earning a good reputation.
London Fields - Simcore IBA5.50ExcellentA new beer launched today on key keg dispense. It is black, with a foamy head. First impression is a burnt/roast malt flavour, followed by a rush of Simcoe hoppiness.
London Fields - Sterling IPA6.00GoodFrom a bottle and a little over-carbonated.
London Fields - American Amber4.20GoodSeasonal beer for first quarter of 2013, served today on key keg dispense. A very hoppy pint.

London Fields - Hackney Hopster4.20Not Tried

I’m here tonight with CAMRA’s ‘London Tasting Panel’, trying to sort out some tasting notes for the London Fields core range of four beers, to appear in the next edition of the Good Beer Guide. We gather in the Taphouse Bar at the brewery for an enjoyable and instructive session. I’ll not try here to replicate the evening’s tasting notes.
BeerABVScoreNotes
London Fields - Hackney Hopster4.20ExcellentA hop-dominated pale ale. Juicy, fruity, southern hemisphere hop tastes.
London Fields - Shoreditch Triangle IPA6.00ExcellentA pale IPA with a good US hop character. As well as barley malt, there is also wheat and oats in the grist.
London Fields - Love Not War4.20GoodA tawny-coloured, fruity bitter with some peppery hop tastes. Cascade, Amarillo, Bramling Cross and Magnum hops all in the mix.
London Fields - Black Path Porter4.20GoodThis is to become a regular beer in place of the Pale Ale. It is a dark ruby colour (but the next brew will be darker) with coffee tastes.

The brewery bar has relocated into the brewery itself, in former office space, and the plan is to open each Friday and Saturday evening in the run-up to Christmas. We were the first to arrive, at about 7:30pm, but it soon started to fill. Just keg and bottled beers are available to start with, but the intention is to install six handpumps. Other beers were available in addition to my list below – I’m afraid I did not take many notes.
BeerABVScoreNotes
London Fields - Black Frost6.00ExcellentNew strong stout, to be launched officially at the Pig’s Ear Beer Festival next week. Here in keg format. Smooth, liquoricey and chocolaty – plus another, ‘secret’ ingredient whose flavour is apparent and which I almost correctly identified. I was asked to keep it secret for the time being.
London Fields - Marynka IPA6.00ExcellentBottled. A nice herbal, almost minty flavour.
London Fields - Sterling IPA6.00GoodBottled
London Fields - Delta IPA6.00GoodBottled.

I organised a brewery visit here tonight for 20 local CAMRA members. It was the first official tour the brewery has put on and was much enjoyed by all. The tour was followed by a tasting session in the brewery bar. A bit of a disappointment that six different cask beers had been drunk dry at the weekend and the next brews were not yet ready – but we got stuck into the bottle-conditioned beers and the kegs, with tasting guidance from the brewery’s Jimmy Hatherley. They were just little samples really, so I’m not going to attempt any proper tasting notes of my own.
BeerABVScoreNotes
London Fields - Hackney Hopster4.20GoodBottled version of the brewery’s best selling cask beer.
London Fields - Pale Ale3.70GoodBottled version of this beer which is usually put in to cask.
London Fields - Black Path Porter4.20GoodA sweetish, black, bottled beer. The brewers are not yet fully happy with this one, but several in the group really liked it.
London Fields - Unfiltered Lager4.10GoodA cloudy, keg lager that is building a good local reputation.
London Fields - Wheat Beer4.70GoodA keg beer – very much at the bananary, estery end of the German wheat beer style.
London Fields - Love Not War4.20AcceptableI only got a drop or two of this bottled beer.
London Fields - Dry Ginger Ale3.90AcceptableBottled version. This is really just the Pale Ale with a load of added ginger. Needs a bit more work.

A private visit to the brewery this evening and a chance to try a couple of the bottled beers.
BeerABVScoreNotes
London Fields - Love Not War4.20GoodI tried the bottled version, which is at the higher strength of 4.7%. Reddish-brown, spicy hop mix and a bit more whumph than the cask version.
London Fields - Motueka IPA6.00GoodThe brewery plans a monthly, single-hop IPA. This was a preview taste of the next in the series as the beer is not ready for release – and indeed still had a sweetish taste suggesting it is not yet fully conditioned. Chestnut-coloured and smoothly hoppy. The final strength may vary from 6.0% and I will update this entry if that is the case.
06 May 2012 (Stephen Harris)
The first brewery event at the new location, featuring cask, keg and bottled beers from the on-site brewery, as well as food and live music. Quite busy on late Sunday afternoon.
BeerABVScoreNotes
London Fields - Galaxy IPA5.10ExcellentThis was a bottled beer, left over stock in fact from the old brewery site. A pretty good, pale, single-hopped IPA.
London Fields - Apollo IPA6.00ExcellentAnother bottled, single-hop IPA, this time from the new brewery location. Darker and more mellow than the Galaxy.
London Fields - Half Nelson5.20GoodA interesting, pale, cloudy, wheat beer, dry-hopped with Nelson Sauvin. I remain to be convinced about the merits of dry-hopping wheat beers, but these Southern Hemisphere hops worked better than some other examples I have tasted recently.
London Fields - Love Not War4.20Not Tried
London Fields - Hackney Hopster4.20Not TriedBeer formerly called Hackney Hopstar.

The pub is found in Hackney, Greater London, E8 3RR.

London Fields Brewery was established in August 2011 in a railway arch close to London Fields railway station. Initially it was a compact, 2.5 barrel brewery and in time a small bar was developed at the site. The brewery was re-launched as a considerably upgraded 10 barrel brewery in the early part of 2012, now situated a few arches south from its original location. A Tap Room has been set up within the brewery itself in Warburton Street and there is also an events space across the road in Helmsley Place. Reports on this page cover the original site and both of the current sites. Brewing on site ceased in 2014, with beers contract brewed elsewhere. The brewery was purchased by Carlsberg and a much revamped brewery and taproom eventually reopened in August 2019. Taproom and brewery closed and put up for sale at the end of 2021. Re-opened 2023 with new name.

We have visited this pub 18 times, seen 39 different beers and tried 38 of them.
