Early evening visit.Good local crowd in,feeling sorry for the Aussie cricketers.
Shepherd Neame - Late Red | 4.50 | | Didn't seem to be its usual self-a bit thin and lacking in resin.Mellow, though. |
Shepherd Neame - Master Brew Bitter | 3.70 | | Again, seemed a bit one dimensional. |
Shepherd Neame - Spitfire (or Spitfire Amber Ale) | 4.20 | Not Tried
11 Dec 2010 (Wittenden)
Visit at dusk after a busy day.The new landlord seems to be finding his feet-the pub was busy with footballers and country sports lovers.
Shepherd Neame - Late Red | 4.50 | | This really hit the spot, a lovely darkish, resinous beer. |
Shepherd Neame - Master Brew Bitter | 3.70 | Not Tried
Shepherd Neame - Spitfire (or Spitfire Amber Ale) | 4.20 | Not Tried
08 Nov 2010 (Wittenden)
On my way home after a meeting-looked in in search of Late Red. A few regulars in.
Shepherd Neame - Master Brew Bitter | 3.70 | | For some reason I haven't drunk much Master Brew this year: its better than folks say-this was crisp and citrussy, with a long hoppy finish. |
Shepherd Neame - Spitfire (or Spitfire Amber Ale) | 4.20 | Not Tried
25 Jan 2010 (Wittenden)
I needed to see a man about ripping out some oak posts: he was there, the pub was pleasantly busy for a winter Monday.
Shepherd Neame - Master Brew Bitter | 3.70 | | Marmaladey:just right for a quick pint. When its as good as this, you want to keep coming back to it. |
Shepherd Neame - Spitfire (or Spitfire Amber Ale) | 4.20 | Not Tried
28 Dec 2009 (Wittenden)
The afternoon of the (post) Boxing Day Shoot-two local shoots chewing the fat,or spitting feathers.
Shepherd Neame - Master Brew Bitter | 3.70 | | A new barrel-crisp,clean but not as citrussy as before.Still a damn fine pint. |

12 Oct 2009 (Wittenden)
Called in on my way back from a meeting. Busy for a Monday
Shepherd Neame - Late Red | 4.50 | | First time I've drunk this in a while: intruigingly complex with a hint of sourness. On excellent form, and selling well tonight , despite being a painful £3.25. |
Shepherd Neame - Master Brew Bitter | 3.70 | Not Tried
16 May 2009 (Wittenden)
Busy Saturday lunch-people watching the Test from Durham on the big screen, a wedding party and associated worthies. We popped in to take-out some fish 'n'chips.
Shepherd Neame - Master Brew Bitter | 3.70 | | More in your face bitter than citrus this time:still, very acceptable after a morning's work |
Shepherd Neame - Spitfire (or Spitfire Amber Ale) | 4.20 | Not Tried
18 Apr 2009 (Wittenden)
A pleasant early evening mix of drinkers and diners. The pub has been redecorated recently, and they've put one of those beastly giant TV screens in. In (some) mitigation, it was showing the IPL, but it was really too hectic for so small a pub.
Shepherd Neame - Master Brew Bitter | 3.70 | | Have Sheps upped their game recently? This was beautiful-marmaladey , with a real zest. MB isn't neccesarily my all time favourite beer, but this puts it in the top five. |
Shepherd Neame - Spitfire (or Spitfire Amber Ale) | 4.20 | Not Tried
28 Feb 2009 (Wittenden)
Came in with the family for a quick lunch, and to try Shep's beer festival offerings. Pleasantly busy Saturday lunchtime.
Elgood's - Black Dog Mild | 3.60 | | As we left, Gerard was putting this on, and gave me a sample:really moreish, roast chocolate-wish I could have stayed for the rest of the pint. |
Woodforde's - Nelson's Revenge | 4.50 | | Part of Shep's "beer festival": the landlord pulled a face when I ordered this, after a tester, but I enjoyed it.Quite sharp and citrussy, but not marmaladey. It went very well with my chicken and ham pie. |
Shepherd Neame - Master Brew Bitter | 3.70 | Not Tried
Shepherd Neame - Spitfire (or Spitfire Amber Ale) | 4.20 | Not Tried
14 Jan 2009 (Wittenden)
Pleasantly busy, with a good fire, quiz night and a general sense of well being.
Shepherd Neame - Master Brew Bitter | 3.70 | | Perhaps not as classic as I've had it here, or perhaps not a Sheps day |
Shepherd Neame - Kent's Best | 4.10 | | Not had this before, or dsid it use to be Best Bitter? Anyway, pleasantly toffeeish. |
Shepherd Neame - Spitfire (or Spitfire Amber Ale) | 4.20 | Not Tried
