Mighty Oak - S'Ale Away3.80GoodGolden in colour but with a traditional English bitter taste. My score 15/20.
Shepherd Neame - Golden Harvest4.20AcceptableNot golden but copper coloured. Dominated by crystal malt, drowning out any other flavours. My score 13/20.

BeerABVScoreNotes
Mighty Oak - Search Engine4.30GoodGolden ale with quite a malty character balanced by English hop flavours. My score 15/20.
Brewster's - Locopotion4.30GoodSweetish with a good dose of citrus hoppiness then a dry finish. My score 15/20.
Northumberland - Legends of the Wear 3 No.3 Jim McNab4.00AcceptableNot one of the better efforts of this series, slightly sour tasting and bitter without it coming from hops. My score 13/20.
Weltons - Ashes To Ashes4.70AcceptableDry and bitter with little other flavours coming through. My score 13/20.
18 Aug 2009 (Martin the Mildman)
BeerABVScoreNotes
Otley - California5.00ExcellentStrong golden ale with a good citrus hop character and good balance of flavours. My score 16/20.
Teignworthy - Gun Dog4.30GoodSweetish and well balanced best bitter. My score 15/20.
Northumberland - Legends of the Tyne 3 No.8 Tony Green4.40AcceptableVery bitter from a piney resinous hop taste and also a bitter, nutty malt taste. My score 14/20.
Bays - Devon Dumpling5.10AcceptableRather hazy and with a dry appley taste suggesting that it had not brewed fully as the beer had been cellared for long enough. My score 12/20.
11 Aug 2009 (Martin the Mildman)
Only a few locals in today so mainly beer samplers and testers making up the numbers.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Downton - Summer Slogger3.70ExcellentVery pale summer ale with very good hop character and good malty sweetness and balance. My score 16/20.
Brains - Honest Ale4.50GoodGolden ale with good balance of hop and malt. My score 15/20.
Rooster's - Hedgehog3.70GoodVery pale but unusually for Roosters, very malty so more of a lager than a bitter. My score 15/20.
Cliff Quay - Tumble Home4.70GoodDark red malty strong bitter with hints of toffee and a bitter finish. My score 15/20.
Alehouse - Commercial Mild3.90AcceptableFairly bitter mild with a tart finish. My score 14/20.
28 Jul 2009 (Martin the Mildman)
BeerABVScoreNotes
Batemans - Middle Wicket4.20AcceptableFairly bitter with quite a dry finish. My score 13/20.
Foxfield - Bullet Encounter4.10AcceptableSuspect this was dry hopped with Bullet hops as it was very hoppy on the nose, and hoppy throughout but with little depth of flavour. My score 13/20.
Mighty Oak - Summer Holiday4.00PoorNot one of their better brews, this was very bitter from crystal or amber malt with a very bitter finish. My score 11/20.
21 Jul 2009 (Martin the Mildman)
BeerABVScoreNotes
Maldon - Mild3.30ExcellentVery thick body for its strength. Lots of roasty malt and low hoppiness. My score 16/20.
Alehouse - Bartholemew Porter4.80ExcellentGood roasted, toffee malt character with a little hop balance. My score 16/20
Spinning Dog - Blooming Marvellous4.10GoodSweetish brew, mainly malty with a hint of nutty, crystal malt. My score 15/20.
Boggart - Cascade4.00AcceptablePale beer supposedly brewed with Cascade hops, but not much evidence in this sample. My score 14/20.
14 Jul 2009 (Martin the Mildman)
BeerABVScoreNotes
Mighty Oak - St Swithins4.00ExcellentGood mix of citrus hop and a little malt to give a refreshing summer beer with a long, hoppy finish. My score 17/20
Lymestone - Ein Stein5.00GoodLager style beer, pale with good balance of soft hoppiness and biscuity malt. My score 15/20.
Hopstar - Pete's Perfect Pint4.10AcceptableRather dry and bitter for my taste. Lacking in much character. My score 12/20.
Boggart - EKG4.50AcceptableUnremarkable bitter with a little hop and malt flavour. My score 14/20.
Weltons - Quatre Bras4.60AcceptableDominated by a sweet caramelly taste bordering on diacetyl. Short, dry finish. My score 14/20
30 Jun 2009 (Martin the Mildman)
One of the members of staff's birthday "do", so lots going on in the pub and some special beers.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Crouch Vale - Twatt's Brewerillo4.50ExceptionalAnother one-off mix, this was Brewers Gold and Amarillo. What a superb combination, giving a pale full bodied bitter packed full of citrus American hoppiness. My score 18/20.
Downton - The Sleeping Ex-Scooper4.40ExcellentThis was a one-off special being mix of Apple Blossom and All Rounder giving a golden coloured ale. Good all round taste and smooth body giving a lingering finish. My score 16/20.
Alehouse - Cocoa's Dad3.80GoodRather strange beer, red/brown in colour with a hint of hoppiness, but mainly a strong bitter cocoa taste. My score 15/20.
Thorne - Pale Ale4.20AcceptableRather thin and lacking much body but pleasant enough with a fairly bitter finish. My score 14/20.
23 Jun 2009 (Martin the Mildman)
BeerABVScoreNotes
Alehouse - 29 Years 12 Months4.10ExcellentBursting with grapefruit hop flavours and slightly hazy, suggesting dry hopping. I'm told the Simcoe hop is involved and probably another American citrus type hop. My score 16/20.
Boggart - Little Ginger4.00GoodAs the name says, not overly ginger, just a hint to make a refreshing finish to a pale summer type beer. My score 15/20.

The pub is found in Hoxton, Central London, N1 7TA.

Re-opened Monday 3rd June 2013 after a period of closure for major refurbishment. The corner double door entrance is now open with floor tiles entrance "mat" renovated - these doors carry published opening times, previously always very "flexible". Is now a Ground Floor and Basement operation only as the upper floors are being converted to residential use. 2 very fine large Wenlock Brewery mirrors adorn the walls. 10 handpumps on the front of original horseshoe bar counter in two side-by-side banks of 5. The 2 lighted statues from top of bar overhead have migrated to either end of the mantelpiece over the open fire. A row of 10 keg taps have been introduced. Gents toilet with 2 urinals at Ground Floor level in left hand corner. New stairs customer access to basement for 2 Ladies toilets and a Gents sit-down. The backless piano has been retained but moved from the right hand corner to the left hand corner. Mini boxes of cider for sale at the back of the right hand leg of the bar counter. The pub is now operated by Moontide which offers a 10% discount on real ales for card carrying CAMRA members. HISTORICAL INFORMATION : For a long time THE real ale house in North London. For years run by guvnors Wills and Steve. A battle royale was on in 2012 to save the pub from the developers into whose hands it had fallen. The local council provided some protection but the battle continued. As at November 2012 yet another revised planning application was made to convert the floors above the pub into accommodation leaving the pub to run as a ground floor and basement operation only. Watch this space! Closed for major refurbishment of the ground floor after business on Sunday 3rd March 2013 with opening planned for, perhaps, late April or May 2013. Planning application to convert upper floors to flats was approved by the local Council sometime in early 2013 meaning loss of the first floor facilities - principally the function room. 2017 North London CAMRA branch Pub of the Year.

We have visited this pub 219 times, seen 757 different beers and tried 655 of them.
