Rowton - Rowton Bitter3.90ExcellentNew brewery formed by ex Hanby brewer. This was a pale bitter with good hop character and loads of biscuity malt going right through to the finish. My score 17/20.
AllGates - Bitter Ye Not3.90GoodWell balanced gold coloured bitter. My score 15/20

I was up in London for a gig so decided to give this place another go. I really enjoyed myself this time around; friendly locals, great beer and a great relaxed atmosphere. Would have liked to of stayed for a session.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Cotleigh - Albatross6.50GoodIntense strong ale. Rich and very fruity, almost a little overpowering. Overall good.

I lost track of time. Came here and enjoyed the jazz piano. Fast visit as needed to get home.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Otley - Croes-o4.20AcceptableGolden beer. No real head. It's an ok bitter with some hops on the end that are quite earthy. Aroma has some yeast and hop. The hop is bitter on the finish. It's fine even reasonably tasty. Hop on finish is very good in fact. Decent.
04 Mar 2009 (Ian)
I had a meeting in London so came here after work. Sometimes you can come and there isn't much new on, and then you can come in and virtually every beer is from a new brewery and sometimes the beers can be one offs and very good. Sat at bar and just went through as many as I could.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Dark Star - American Pale Ale (some has also been brewed by Fuller's)4.70ExcellentAn all time favourite beer. And it's good, but not perfect. fruit on finish though is stunning.
New-K-Ham (Joint Venture Oakham Ales / Newby Wyke) - Eddie Stone4.20ExcellentI seem to remember Dubbel having this and not going over the top on it. It's golden with a thin white head. Good solid sherberty hop aroma. In great nick in mouth. Beautiful sherbert lime falvour. Very impressive. I thought quite Oakhamy. Really drinkable.
Fox - Nina's Mild3.90GoodVery dark brown, like dark cola, lasting beige head. Decent dark mild, bit of smoke, some dark fruit, some dark choc. Not much hop presence. Bit of sparkle in there. It's good. Very good dark fruit. Extremely tasty.
Northumberland - Legends of the Wear Nick Sharkey4.30GoodAmber colour with thin off white head. Rather nice sherberty hop aroma over a fairly light bitter. Some fruit salad, malts aren't too solid, but there. It's an ok bitter. Reasonably good sherbert hop and I would have been happy to have this all evening.
Pitfield's - Enemy4.50PoorVery hazy copper, thin off white head. Tastes ok though. A bitter, but a little bit of acidic/bleach to it. Some tangerine-y fruit. Bit of rubber. Maybe not at its best.

I had some unfinished business from Tuesday when I had been up in London, so decided to come back and this time cycle around the city. Trundled up here from Waterloo East via Utobeer, so was carrying a few bottles in the satchel. Coming up past the London Wall, a fellow cyclist asked me the way to Old Street. Cool, mistaken for a local. Mind you, not too local as I do actually stop for red lights. Pub had a few hardcore people in about 15 minutes after opening. The hot salt beef sandwich as ever kept me going all day.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Crouch Vale - Amarillo5.00GoodHad this with my hot salt beef sandwich and the hops cut through the mustard and gherkins perfectly, such a likeable beer.
Adnams - Oyster Stout4.30GoodBlack, dark beige/tan head. Decent fullish stout. Great roasted slightly toasty stout. Bit of liquorice. Lovely rich stout. Not too subtle, but a decent stout wtih moderate richness.
Peakstones (formerly Peakstones Rock) - Mild3.00GoodRuby, lasting beige head. Some caramel, bit of butter, but nothing too offensive. Nice enough. Good solid mild. Not many hops. Good malts, good condition and impressive for a 3.0% beer.

This was chock full of beer tickers and Burnley Dave was doing cellar runs, so this must be a regular thing on a Tuesday. Really good boozer though. Ended up talking about darts and 1980s Tory politicians.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Crouch Vale - Don't Panic4.20ExcellentCopper, thin white head. Good fruit. But also good hop on this. To me it's a bit like a low alcohol American Pale Ale. Hoppy American aroma, malts are a little sweet. American hop finish. A low ABV APA. Good though. Big hop for a 4.2% UK beer.
Elland - Red House4.30ExcellentChestnut colour, lasting ivory head. Fresh on, decent malts, lovely, red fruits. OK balancing hop. Quite dry and sparkly. But this is about the red malts. Decent stuff, I like it. Like a proper Amerian red ale/amber ale. A bit like Laurelwood Organic Red, but English. Salty pork chops somewhere here. Bizarre and brilliant.
Alehouse - Rudolf4.00GoodChristmas in February, isn't that a Lou Reed lyric from the New York album? I like Alehouse, they do interesting beers. This is no exception. It's slightly nettley, oddly hopped, but wild. Some fruit.
Rooster's - Farmhouse4.30GoodDeep copper, thin white head. Fruity hoppy beer. Good hoppy fruity beer. Fruit is fruit salady, hops are white pepper hop and drying. Anyway, it's good.
Epicurus Craft Beer (formerly Hornbeam) - February Gold3.60AcceptablePale gold, lasting thick off white head. Slightly sweaty hoppy golden ale. Settles down into a bit of a leafy lime golden beer.

Mid Sunday afternoon and this had a lovely relaxed feel. Chatty locals of all ages. The jazz was excellent especially the clarinet player. Plus the salt beef sandwich was extra thick today.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Dark Star - Over The Moon3.80ExcellentDistinctive Hophead aroma and thenthis fuller malier chocolatey flavour and full mouthfeel. Really enjoyable mild. Citrusy limey hop and choc? Lovely combo.
Pitfield's - EKG4.20GoodI had 2 halves of this just to make sure. Slightly hazy gold, thin white head. Like a golden bitter with subtle tasty hops on finish. Very drinkable, very nice hops and something that draws me to it. No great complexity, but good drinkability.
Brewster's - Yvette4.80GoodGold, thin white head. Yep, it’s ok, got a slight surnesss to it. But it’s an alright strongish golden ale. Some drinkability. Good hops and nice peachy fruit. It’s fine, even on a hangover, it was good.
Ossett - Real Ale Revolution Wheat Beer4.60AcceptablePale gold, lating off white head. Took ages to settle. A little lemony and soapy, but rather good. Very Ossett in nature. Alcohol is a little obvious maybe. Syrupy, but fine.
20 Jun 2008 (Ian)
Fin and Loz from Ratebeer.com were down for the weekend from Merton, Oxon, so we all met up here for some beers.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Mighty Oak - Umpire's Best4.10GoodGold, lasting white head. Sherberty hoppy blond beer. This isn’t bad, bit ascetic on the flavour, bit of ginger maybe. Fine.
Holden's - Galloping Major4.60GoodCopper/gold with thin white head. A pretty good tangeriney strongish beer. Bit of tea. It’s fine, pretty decent flavours. OK.
Shaw's - Golden Perle4.20AcceptableGold, dusty aroma. Some odd almond marzipan. Pretty dull, run of the mill golden beer with a bit of almond.
Rebellion - Mild3.50PoorI wasn't expecting much and I was right. So, so bad aroma, bad in mouth. Didn't like this at all.

The corner double door entrance is now open with floor tiles entrance "mat" renovated - these doors carry published opening times, previously always very "flexible". Is now a Ground Floor and Basement operation only as the upper floors are being converted to residential use. 2 very fine large Wenlock Brewery mirrors adorn the walls. 10 handpumps on the front of original horseshoe bar counter in two side-by-side banks of 5. The 2 lighted statues from top of bar overhead have migrated to either end of the mantelpiece over the open fire. A row of 10 keg taps have been introduced. Gents toilet with 2 urinals at Ground Floor level in left hand corner. New stairs customer access to basement for 2 Ladies toilets and a Gents sit-down. The backless piano has been retained but moved from the right hand corner to the left hand corner. Mini boxes of cider for sale at the back of the right hand leg of the bar counter. The pub is now operated by Moontide which offers a 10% discount on real ales for card carrying CAMRA members. HISTORICAL INFORMATION : For a long time THE real ale house in North London. For years run by guvnors Wills and Steve. A battle royale was on in 2012 to save the pub from the developers into whose hands it had fallen. The local council provided some protection but the battle continued. As at November 2012 yet another revised planning application was made to convert the floors above the pub into accommodation leaving the pub to run as a ground floor and basement operation only. Watch this space! Closed for major refurbishment of the ground floor after business on Sunday 3rd March 2013 with opening planned for, perhaps, late April or May 2013. Planning application to convert upper floors to flats was approved by the local Council sometime in early 2013 meaning loss of the first floor facilities - principally the function room. 2017 North London CAMRA branch Pub of the Year.

We have visited this pub 219 times, seen 757 different beers and tried 655 of them.
