I was surprised to see the cask beer range unchanged since PP’s visit four days ago; and watching the bar it was clear that relatively few were drinking the stuff. This made me a bit wary and, although the two pints I drank were fine, I decided to lash out on a couple of halves of very special beers from the keg fonts.
Founders - Curmudgeon Old Ale (2016) | 9.80 | | - From an old fashioned keg I think, although pretty much untroubled by carbonation. This is not an Old Ale under any definition I am familiar with. I’d call it a Barley Wine. Dark amber in colour. It has obvious alcohol strength and is a warming beer. There is a touch of sticky toffee sweetness. And on top of everything there is a woodiness from oak barrel-aging. Definitely a sipping beer. |
Siren Craft - Agua de Sapo | 5.80 | | From key-keg. A murky brown colour. Described as a Brown Ale with ginger, lemon and sugar, and every bit as fabulous as that description suggests. Perhaps pushing at the boundary of what is a spiced beer and what is a beer cocktail. |
Gun - Base Ejection Smoked Rye | 4.70 | | Amber in colour and pretty clear for an unfined beer. Both the rye and the smoke are conspicuous in the flavour. Perhaps could have done with a little more body. |
CTZN (formerly Kew) - Nightshade Chilli Porter | 4.30 | | A very dark brown-coloured, chilli-flavoured Porter. The chilli is more of a tingle than a burn. |
Kent - Craft Pale | 3.80 | Not Tried
Gun - Scaramanga Extra Pale Ale | 3.90 | Not Tried
Gun - Project Babylon Pale Ale | 4.60 | Not Tried
CTZN (formerly Kew) - Botanic Amber | 3.80 | Not Tried
21 Jan 2017 (Philip Pirrip)
Evening east end adventure visit. Only 6 handpumps and 21 fizz taps. Every seat taken but I observed to bar staff how few people were coming up for beers, perhaps sip-supping the expensive fizz to last all night.
Gun - Base Ejection Smoked Rye | 4.70 | | Disappointing cloying beer, unfined and vegan maybe but not clean to the taste |
CTZN (formerly Kew) - Nightshade Chilli Porter | 4.30 | | Initial chilli warming promise soon dissipated so that towards the end it tasted just like a porter |
Kent - Craft Pale | 3.80 | Not Tried
Gun - Scaramanga Extra Pale Ale | 3.90 | Not Tried
Gun - Project Babylon Pale Ale | 4.60 | Not Tried
CTZN (formerly Kew) - Botanic Amber | 3.80 | Not Tried
30 Dec 2016 (Stephen Harris)
Late afternoon into early evening. It became very busy.
Gun - Project Babylon Pale Ale | 4.60 | | Fragrant, golden and hoppy. |
Wild Beer Co. - Somerset Wild | 5.00 | | On keg dispense. A cloudy yellow/gold colour. A very tart beer in the Berliner Weiss style. Very lovely. |
Kissingate - Black Cherry Mild | 4.20 | | A black beer with a very fruity cherry flavour. |
Titanic - Cappuccino | 4.50 | Not Tried
Dark Star - Revelation | 5.70 | Not Tried
Kent - Craft Pale | 3.80 | Not Tried
Blackjack - Keyworth Mid | 4.80 | Not Tried
14 Dec 2016 (Stephen Harris)
Early evening. News of this new pub opening seems to have got around, and it is quite crowded in here.
Blackjack - Devil's Bedpost | 5.00 | | Pale and very hoppy indeed. |
Partizan - Saison Kriek | 3.80 | | On keg dispense. Deep red in colour, with pink foam on top. Has a tart, cherry flavour. Very good. |
Saltaire - Triple Choc (was Triple Chocoholic) | 4.80 | Not Tried
Redemption - Pale Ale | 3.80 | Not Tried
Dark Star - Revelation | 5.70 | Not Tried
Kent - Craft Pale | 3.80 | Not Tried

08 Dec 2016 (Stephen Harris)
Second day of opening for this latest Craft Beer Co pub and nice to be welcomed on arrival by Martin Hayes, co-owner and founder of the chain. There was a busy turnover of after-work trade tonight and I really hope that this venture is a success in an area that has lost so many of its pubs.
Dark Star - Green Hopped IPA | 6.50 | | A smooth, slightly sweet, resinous IPA with none of the rough edges shown by some green-hopped beers. |
Saltaire - Citra Pale | 4.20 | | A pale beer with a full Citra hop hit. |
Gun - Scaramanga Extra Pale Ale | 3.90 | | A pale beer with an unusual but very nice hop flavour. |
Founders - Porter | 6.50 | | On keg dispense. A black beer with a brown head. Full-flavoured, rich and quite dry. I’d call this a Stout. |
Redemption - Pale Ale | 3.80 | Not Tried
Kent - Craft Pale | 3.80 | Not Tried
Dark Star - Crème Brûlée | 5.90 | Not Tried
