I was surprised to see the cask beer range unchanged since PP’s visit four days ago; and watching the bar it was clear that relatively few were drinking the stuff. This made me a bit wary and, although the two pints I drank were fine, I decided to lash out on a couple of halves of very special beers from the keg fonts.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Founders - Curmudgeon Old Ale (2016)9.80Exceptional- From an old fashioned keg I think, although pretty much untroubled by carbonation. This is not an Old Ale under any definition I am familiar with. I’d call it a Barley Wine. Dark amber in colour. It has obvious alcohol strength and is a warming beer. There is a touch of sticky toffee sweetness. And on top of everything there is a woodiness from oak barrel-aging. Definitely a sipping beer.
Siren Craft - Agua de Sapo5.80ExcellentFrom key-keg. A murky brown colour. Described as a Brown Ale with ginger, lemon and sugar, and every bit as fabulous as that description suggests. Perhaps pushing at the boundary of what is a spiced beer and what is a beer cocktail.
Gun - Base Ejection Smoked Rye4.70GoodAmber in colour and pretty clear for an unfined beer. Both the rye and the smoke are conspicuous in the flavour. Perhaps could have done with a little more body.
CTZN (formerly Kew) - Nightshade Chilli Porter4.30GoodA very dark brown-coloured, chilli-flavoured Porter. The chilli is more of a tingle than a burn.

Evening east end adventure visit. Only 6 handpumps and 21 fizz taps. Every seat taken but I observed to bar staff how few people were coming up for beers, perhaps sip-supping the expensive fizz to last all night.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Gun - Base Ejection Smoked Rye4.70AcceptableDisappointing cloying beer, unfined and vegan maybe but not clean to the taste
CTZN (formerly Kew) - Nightshade Chilli Porter4.30AcceptableInitial chilli warming promise soon dissipated so that towards the end it tasted just like a porter

Second day of opening for this latest Craft Beer Co pub and nice to be welcomed on arrival by Martin Hayes, co-owner and founder of the chain. There was a busy turnover of after-work trade tonight and I really hope that this venture is a success in an area that has lost so many of its pubs.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Dark Star - Green Hopped IPA6.50ExcellentA smooth, slightly sweet, resinous IPA with none of the rough edges shown by some green-hopped beers.
Saltaire - Citra Pale4.20ExcellentA pale beer with a full Citra hop hit.
Gun - Scaramanga Extra Pale Ale3.90ExcellentA pale beer with an unusual but very nice hop flavour.
Founders - Porter6.50ExcellentOn keg dispense. A black beer with a brown head. Full-flavoured, rich and quite dry. I’d call this a Stout.

The pub is found in Limehouse, Greater London, E14 7JD.

This pub in Commercial Road was present by 1871 as the Railway Tavern; the licensee at the time being William Gordon Crow, who previously ran the Crow’s Nest nearby. It is a Victorian era, single bar, street corner pub that nestles almost underneath the railway line beside Limehouse station. Traditionally a Charrington’s house; that brewery’s former ownership can still be seen in the green panels in the windows. For a while in the 1980s the pub was renamed Stepney East, before reverting to the Railway Tavern name. By 2010 the ownership had moved to Punch Taverns and in December 2016 it re-opened following refurbishment as the newest outlet for the growing Craft Beer Co. chain. Six handpumps and twenty-one keg taps on the bar.

We have visited this pub 26 times, seen 115 different beers and tried 66 of them.
