Visits Details
16 Jun 2009 (Flying.geordie)
Not too busy on this visit and able to see what beers on offer.
Cottage - Evening Star | 5.00 | | Dry and Bitter. |
Weltons - Export Stout | 4.70 | | Not the best stout around. |
Cottage - Mini Cooper | 4.70 | | Pale and no real taste. |
Cottage - Whippets of the Caribbean | 4.80 | | Cloudy and sulphur taste. Barman did take it off sale. |
16 Jun 2009 (Martin the Mildman)
Cottage - Evening Star | 5.00 | | Mid brown/red with reasonable malt character. Short, dry and bitter finish. My score 12/20. |
King Beer (formerly W.J. King) - Bramling Cross | 4.20 | | What little hop character there was was drowned out by the usual King yeasty, cardboady malt tang which carried on into the finish. My score 9/20. |
Cottage - Mini Cooper | 4.70 | | Pale, no discernable hop character and a rather bitter cardboady, rubbery malt taste lurking in the background. Short dry finish. My score 9/20. |
09 Jun 2009 (Martin the Mildman)
Ossett - Corker | 4.00 | | Golden with lots of dry citrus hop, good balance then a dryish finish. My score 16/20. |
Wadworth - Maypole Mild | 3.30 | | Mildly hopped with a little fruit and some malty bitterness in the finish. Red/brown in colour. My score 15/20. |
Bazens' - Spring Tide | 4.30 | | Golden, with characteristic smokey taste. Some sweetness, finish predominately smoked malt. My score 15/20. |
06 Jun 2009 (Martin the Mildman)
Blindmans - Micro Magic | 3.70 | | Malty bitter with a little hoppiness. My score 15/20 |
02 Jun 2009 (Martin the Mildman)
George Wright - Double Top | 4.50 | | Pale and very hoppy. Big Cascade hop hit, maybe other high alpha hops in there, lasting right through to the finish. Could still taste the hops when I got home an hour later! My score 16/20. |
Hadrian and Border - Belgian Byker Wit | 4.30 | | In the style of a Belgian White beer, that is, a clear, pale bitter. Good balance of hop and malt. My score 15/20 |
Acorn - Quantum | 4.50 | | Golden and well balanced. My score 15/20. |
19 Apr 2009 (Ian)
Not very busy on a Sunday lunchtime. I was only here for a bit before catching the train home.
Cathedral - Magna Carta | 5.00 | | Golden ale with a lasting white head. Slightly yeasty beer with a touch of citrus, but a little bland. |
Nelson - No. 23 | 4.40 | | Earthy rubber on aroma. Not very good. Some hop on finish. Some toffee onthe malts, but this earthy rubberyness dominates too much. |
15 Mar 2009 (Ian)
I can't seem to stay away from this pub. Not very busy on a Sunday evening, so I got a stool at the bar and had a few beers.
Islay Ales - Angus Og Ale | 4.50 | | Hazy copper thin off white head. It's a bitter, decent malty fruits, some bitter hops on finish. You know, a bitter. |
Salopian - Blarney | 4.70 | | It's a strongish bitter, some malt, some sherberty hop. It's ok, decent, has bits of everything a bitter should be, bit lacking on finishing hops though. OK. |
Castle Rock - Sand Martin | 4.50 | | Intriguing chocolate stout according to the pump clip. Black, lasting dark beige head. Milk choc, touch of vanilla, bit sickly, if truth be told. Bit of darkish malt. Tad of powder on palate. OK choc, bit artificial somehow. |
04 Mar 2009 (Ian)
I walked in and couldn't believe my luck. Two Thornbridge beers on, so I ordered a pint of both and didn't ponce around.
Thornbridge / Thornbridge Hall - Ashford | 4.20 | | Really good, better than at The Rake at the meet the brewers. No diacetyl. Very solid brown ale. Good malts, like a more mallty Lord Marples from the same brewery. |
Thornbridge / Thornbridge Hall - Hark | 4.80 | | Gold, slight haze, lassting off white head. Even slightly pilsner like on the hop, good biting freshness. I like it a lot, refreshing spring beer. Little bit of dust, but really good, I liked it. Could have drunk loads. Good fruitiness. |
28 Feb 2009 (Ian)
I was on my way back from the Bricklayers Arms in Putney but thought I would take advantage of coming here. Third time in a row where beers are good and served in a lot better condition than some times in 2008. They seemed to have stepped up their game.
Salopian - Ghurka | 4.20 | | Good sharp sauvin style hop aroma. Really good aggressive hop on finish. Best beer of the day so far including the Bricklayers fest. Good harsh aggressive yellow grapefruit/lime hop. Great condition, great in mouth. Rather lovely. Really drinkable and the harsh finish is lovely. |
Cottage - Blower Bentley | 5.00 | | Good looking beer, deep mahogany, lasting dark beige head. A slightly ESB style beer, really good earthy hop finish. Bit tight on the carbonation on the finish. Good fruit. Dried raisin sultana. Slight creaminess. |
Broughton - Old Jock | 6.70 | | Don't often see this on cask in England. Awesome initially, some pukey malt later. Not any huge hop. Alcohol is evident. Interesting, but eventually just a bit pukey. |

Sometimes the beer here can be a little muddy in the flavours, or not quite in the right condition. However, the last couple of times I've been, it has been excellent. Sat at the bar, next to John Bratley, famous London beer scooper who has had a hair cut.
Saltaire - Winter Ale | 4.90 | | Light russet colour, lasting beige head. Good tasting ESB. Lovely fruity malt, good mouthfeel. Rather good. A little sweet maybe, but nice enough. Actually this is excellent. I arrived feeling a little jaded, but this got my mouth up and dancing. Some hop on end, but not aggressive. |
Mauldons - Mole Trap | 3.80 | | Competent quite tasty bitter with that Mauldon's biting hop finish. Very moreish bitter. |
Spectrum - Dark Fantastic | 3.50 | | Pale chestnut colour, thin beige head. Lovely roasty toasty bitter. After not having a dark bitter in ages, I've had a few recently. Very good rich roasty toasty malts. Good beer. Tasty. |
Spectrum - 4X | 4.60 | | Badged as "It's.....XXXX" Chestnut colour, lasting beige head. Decent best bitter, quite fruity really. It's rather good. I like Spectrum beers. Simple, basic, but good flavours, good balance. Almost some cherry. Very good dryness on finish. Good condition, bit of chocolate on the malts. |
Tipple's - Redhead | 4.20 | | Reddy chestnut, lasting thin ivory head. Muddy earthy bitter. Very earthy, does leave a dry aftertaste of mud. Some reddish fruit. Not very pleasant to me, but it's fine, just not my thing. |
Tipple's - Lady Evelyn | 4.30 | | Pale gold, lasting thin white head. Decent pale gold bitter. Bit of farty yeast on aroma, but then some fullness in the mouth. Decent sherbert biting hop on finish. Fine. |
Saltaire - Rye Smile | 3.90 | | I got the last half out of the barrel, so a bit hard to say. Hazy old gold, lasting thick cream. Quite heavy on the rye, good woody taste. No condition. OK, should be quite interesting when in good nick. |
Windsor Castle (see also Sadler's entry) - Sadler's Jack's Ale | 3.80 | | Paleish gold, thin beige head. Farty aroma. Quite ascetic on the lemon fruit. Fart/cardboard runs through it. Just not very nice. Good condition, some lemon on finish, but overall not very good and I left some of it. |
