I mean this is very handy to get to and it was open at 11.30, so I got some beers from Utobeer, had a few halves here and then caught the underground to Euston for my 12.17 train to Liverpool. Not a bad morning's work.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Beowulf - Wuffa4.50AcceptablePale gold, thin white head. In the golden/blond style with some grassy hop. It's got some fullness in body, some ok sherbert, grassy hop. This is ok, nothing special, and the grassiness isn't really for me.
Wood's - Shropshire Hills Beauty4.20AcceptableCopper, thin beige head. It's a slightly yeasty acidic bitter, some woodiness on aroma. Some mid citrus fruits in mouth. bit of juiciness in the malts. It's a bitter, bit acidic maybe.
20 Jun 2008 (Ian)
There were more people outside than inside the pub on a Friday late afternoon. I got a seat at the bar and tried some of the different beers.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Branscombe (was Branscombe Vale) - Drayman's Best Bitter4.20GoodA very brown best bitter, with dry malt tones, the kinda best bitter that's hard to find these days due to the propensity for UK breweries to produce Brewers Gold/Hophead/JHB clones. Some dry mlat/golden syrup/malt loaf, but not heavy either. A best bitter.
Blindmans - Buff3.60AcceptableCopper thin beige head. Creamy toffeeish light bitter. Quite creamy and full in mouth, some dry dusty hop. Malts carry the caramel throughout. It's an ok bitter.
Distant Hills (was Howard Town) - Long Dendale Light3.90PoorVery pale gold, a bit nastily lemon ascetic. Not a wonderful beer. OK condition, but just too soapy. It really does put you off.
19 Apr 2008 (Ian)
I was meeting up with some Ratebeer people later on, but stopped off at Borough Market to pick up some bread and cheese for the tasting and some beers from Utobeer. The pub had just opened, but was already busy.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Mad Squirrel (formerly Red Squirrel) - Springfield IPA5.40ExcellentGold with thin beige head. Oh, yes, lovely US accented hop aroma, some choc too. Hops are leafy, some resin, a little earthy, but this stinging lychee finish is just excellent. Good condition. Choccy earthiness runs through it, but that finish is just so great for a UK beer.
Wickwar - Severn Bore4.20AcceptableChestnut, thin beige head. Earthy and fruity best bitter, drying hop on end is there but not over the top. Decent red berry jammy fruit. Fine. Little bit of yeast. Jammy strawberry.
09 Apr 2008 (Ian)
Pretty busy, but we got a shelf towards the back of the pub. The bell ringers from Southwark Cathedral were in who I recognised from a Marcus Brigstocke programme on BBC4 from last year. Bizarre.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Little Valley - Midgeley Mild3.80ExcellentDeep chestnut with thin beige head. Roasty toasty mild with good fruits. Rather a good mild. It is mild, but it is toasty. Excellent mild, with some choc, but just so tasty in the malts.
Salopian - Buzz4.30GoodPale gold with thin white head. Big honey aroma. No huge body, some honey in the mouth. Honey sting on end. For someone who likes honey beers, this had lots of honey on end. I liked it.
RCH - Taunton Mayor4.30AcceptableCopper with thin off white head. Biscuity bitter, some caramel, decent condition. Bit of yeast on aroma. Decent caramel, ok caramel bitter.
Taunton Brewing Co. - Taunton Castle4.30AcceptablePale chestnut colour with thin beige head. Choccy malts, dry malt flavour. Decent aroma, bit spicy on aroma and end. But I quite liked it. Choc and spice hop finish. Like a toned down ESB.
RCH - Totty Pot4.50AcceptableVery deep ruby with thin beige head. Roasted malt slight butter aroma. Not sure where it goes in the mouth. Very dry charcoal, burnt malt. Not real choc or coffee. Some fullness in mouth but it’s a burnt malt flavour.
29 Mar 2008 (Ian)
I'd just bought some beers at Utobeer and a rabbit for my Sunday tea, so I thought I should have some beers. Stood next to a couple of other beer geeks.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Durham - Evensong5.00ExcellentRuby with thin tan head. Decent toasty malts, some fruit. Pretty decent, lovely juicy malts, good finish. Good mouthfeel, nice ginger. Good ESB.
Fernandes - Gladiator4.80ExcellentVery citrusy beer, good pale citrus flavours. Mouthfeel is pretty deep, good lasting zingy citrus finish. Very perfumey. Very very good pale gold citrusy beer. Don’t know what the rest of the rating says as I was quite drunk by this stage, something about not over doing something and something else about peach and grapefruit.
Westerham - Single Hop Goldings4.00PoorFull of diacetyl
14 Mar 2008 (Ian)
Still a good pub to come to in the great area of Borough Market.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Mordue - Magic 11523.70Good I’m guessing that it is named after the local radio station. Pale gold, lasting off white head. Decent condition, grassy citrus hop aroma. Very drinkable, decent in mouth. Sherberty hop finish in the JHB style, but more green hop grassy. Very drinkable, downed it easily with some pleasure.
10 Feb 2008 (Ian)
Not very busy and rather nice to come here and try the beers before going next door to The Wheatsheaf to watch the football.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Quartz - Quazar4.60ExcellentRusset with lasting beige head. Somewhere between a best bitter and an ESB. Some malty fruit, some peppery hop. Solid beer, decent quality. There is this sting at the top of the mouth as the hop overtakes the rich fruit malt that is very pleasing
Harvey's - Kiss4.80GoodTypical Harvey’s yeast on aroma, over a relatively complex malt base. Really rather good
Elgood's - Thin Ice4.70GoodRuby with lasitng beige head. I’m guessing that it is supposed to be an old ale but can see it’s down as an ESB. A malty ashy aroma, but then too much caramel in the mouth and no sourness. But a tingly dry hop. As a darkish ale, yep, not bad, bit too sweet up front, but the hop stings the teeth on the finish. Interesting. A malt toffee hoppy beer.
Hampshire - Propose Ale4.30GoodAarh, a joke on proposal. Therefore another St Valentine beer. Gold with thin beige head. It’s got a good citrus edge to this. In fact teh fruit is lovely, peach, grapefruit, and a spicy blackcurrant on finish hints at Willamette hops. Really, really tingles the tongue. Really full of hoppy flavour and interesting fruit.
Salopian - Shangri La4.00GoodGold/blond beer with some acidity. Lots of hop, but it is on the nettley side. Quite a good nettley beer, good condition with exemplary lacing. Nicely acidic hoppy, creamy and nettle.
Moles - Moleo & Juliet4.40AcceptableBrewed for St Valentines Day 2008. Copper colour with lasting beige head. Slightly yeasty best bitter, decent malt and nice drying hop. Malts have a berry tang to them. Perfectly fine best bitter.
29 Jan 2008 (Ian)
Fairly busy as always, early evening.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Hadrian and Border - Janus4.30AcceptableYeasty golden beer. Good condition, very yeasty. It's alright, nice character, some citrus hop sting on finish. But it is yeasty.
Wapping - Albion5.40AcceptableStrange to have a Wapping beer in London. Copper colour with thin beige head. Nutty yeasty caramel. Unusual Wapping beer as it is not full of hops. Malt/caramel aroma. Dry malts in mouth. Some hop on end to balance, but not one of their best.
27 Jan 2008 (Ian)
I managed to get a stool at the bar, so drinking the beers was a bit easier than normal. Not heaving, but certainly busy.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Burton Bridge - Burton Porter4.50GoodExcellent porter. Tasty, roasted, but not aggressive. Easy drinking porter. Nothing flashy, just solid.
Sharp's - Own4.40AcceptableChestnut colour with lasting beige head. A slightly sulphury aroma soon burns off. Some sherbert. Fullish, creamyish. Some fruit. A little bit earthy, but this really nice sharp sherbert hop comes up on the finish. Odd, I don't like the first hit, but the swallow and finish are good.
Kelburn - Dark Moor4.50AcceptableTasty dark beer with good rich dark malts. A bit like Goacher's Dark, but with more chocolate.
Trossachs Craft - WayLade3.90PoorGold with thin white head. I've had this in the Way Lade Inn, just outside of Callander and remembering I liked it. This is a caramel/toffee light bitter, with very light hop presence. It's a dullish, caramel bitter with very light hop finishing bite. Not really to my taste.
York (now brewed by and at Black Sheep) - Saaz4.00PoorFull of diacetyl. Kills it. Yep diacetyl definitely. Ugly.
30 Nov 2007 (Ian)
I sat outside on a Friday just after work and enjoyed the market and everyone else chatting and drinking. I was very happy as I had just bought myself a rabbit and some lardons to cook on Saturday. And Utobeer was still open, so I bought some more Great Divide Hercules Double IPA.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Oakham - Bishops Farewell4.60ExcellentBit soapy, but still excellent.

The pub is found in Southwark, Central London, SE1 9AA.

Famous pub opposite Borough Market in Stoney Street. Central bar has many beers which change on a regular basis and are mostly from UK micros. Can be extremely busy. Refurbishment some time ago and now there is one main room with a side area with seating as well. Many customers use the pavement outside to stand and enjoy their drinks. Really a must for anyone taking in London pubs. Sports 12 handpumps with 6 in each of the 2 distinct bar serving areas plus a further 4 for cider dispense at the far rear. Upstairs restaurant bar area too, mainly for lunchtime use. In 2019 the real ale choice was drastically reduced to 4 and the cider was withdrawn. Downstairs toilets. Card payment only, cash not accepted here.

We have visited this pub 282 times, seen 813 different beers and tried 647 of them.
