Early evening. I’m on my own and look at the menu. “Nachos, £7 or £12 for sharing”. I order the £7 plate which I assume is not for sharing. An embarrassingly huge platter arrives, enough for at least three people. I must read menus more carefully and pay more attention to punctuation.
Howling Hops (Brewed at Hackney Wick) - Pale XX | 5.10 | | Hazy pale gold. Masses of hop flavours |
Howling Hops (Brewed at Hackney Wick) - Single Batch Series No. 1 | 5.50 | | The full murk. A golden NEIPA with Citra hops and some rye in the mix. Excellent. |
29 Jul 2018 (Stephen Harris)
Today is the first wet day for so long; nobody can remember the last time it rained. It means that in mid-afternoon on a Sunday Matt B and myself have this place almost to ourselves when usually it would be busy.
Howling Hops (Brewed at Hackney Wick) - Dinner Ale | 5.20 | | A red / brown beer with lots of hops and underlying caramel. |
Howling Hops (Brewed at Hackney Wick) - House IPA | 6.90 | | Murky yellow / gold and very hoppy. |
18 Apr 2018 (Stephen Harris)
The weather has changed from winter to summer overnight and the entire evening clientele here are sitting outside.
Howling Hops (Brewed at Hackney Wick) - Black XX No. 1 | 5.50 | | This excellent Black IPA seems to have become a spring special. |
Howling Hops (Brewed at Hackney Wick) - Pale XX | 5.10 | | A version of this beer with Citra, Columbus and Chinook hops. |
02 Apr 2018 (Stephen Harris)
News reaches me just as I am passing here that today’s football at Brisbane Road has been postponed following heavy rain. So I pop in for lunch and have an enormous plate of nachos.
Howling Hops (Brewed at Hackney Wick) - Pale XX No. 2 | 5.10 | | Badged today as being 5.8%. Lovely hop tastes. |
Howling Hops (Brewed at Hackney Wick) - Pale Ale Custom Deluxe No. 1 | 3.80 | | Hoptastic. |
13 Feb 2018 (Stephen Harris)
Quite a chilly evening.
Howling Hops (Brewed at Hackney Wick) - IPA New England Special | 6.90 | | Hazy pale gold and absolutely lovely. |
Howling Hops (Brewed at Hackney Wick) - AUPA | 4.50 | | A hazy, golden colour. Not short of hops (Ella, Topaz, Vic Secret). |
Howling Hops (Brewed at Hackney Wick) - Pale XX Custom Superior | 5.10 | | Pale gold and almost clear. No hop deficiency detected (Citra, Columbus, Chinook). |
09 Jan 2018 (Stephen Harris)
My mate Robert doesn’t get let out of the house very often, but has an evening pass for today. He choses to meet here. It is unusually quiet tonight, with nine different beers available from the tanks.
Howling Hops (Brewed at Hackney Wick) - Pale XX No. 2 | 5.10 | | I love this style of beer – the trouble is that it makes most things taste dull in comparison. |
Howling Hops (Brewed at Hackney Wick) - IPA New England Special | 6.90 | | Another cracker. |
08 Dec 2017 (Stephen Harris)
Early Friday evening. It’s a cold one and few have ventured out, although starting to fill by the time I left. Eight beers to choose from.
Howling Hops (Brewed at Hackney Wick) - AUPA | 4.50 | | A typically in-your-face Howling Hops Pale Ale, this one very well-hopped with Australian varieties Ella, Topaz and Vic Secret. |
Howling Hops (Brewed at Hackney Wick) - Black Forest Gateau | 4.50 | | A black beer with a brown head. It tastes of cakes. And fruit. |
21 Aug 2017 (Magnus Greel)
Impressive use of a cavernous warehouse building with a free brewery tour enroute to the gents! Fairly quiet on a Monday lunchtime with a handful of customers dotted about.
Howling Hops (Former brewery at Cock Tavern) - Pale Ale Custom De Luxe | 3.80 | | Hazy as advertised, served in a 2/3 pint glass resembled pineapple juice but tasted sour and smoky, not to my palate. |
Howling Hops (Brewed at Hackney Wick) - East End Hefeweizen | 4.50 | Not Tried
Howling Hops (Brewed at Hackney Wick) - Kölsch | 4.60 | Not Tried
Howling Hops (Brewed at Hackney Wick) - IPA New England Special | 6.90 | Not Tried
Howling Hops (Brewed at Hackney Wick) - Passion Fruit Gose | 4.50 | Not Tried
10 Aug 2017 (Stephen Harris)
My second London Beer City event of the day. A new 2.5% Radler (shandy) is being launched here tonight by Square Root London. It is based on Howling Hops’ Das Koolsch. I’m not entering it on here as a beer, but it was very nice indeed (and free). I had a couple of regular beers too and a nice meal.
Howling Hops (Brewed at Hackney Wick) - Pale XX No. 2 | 5.10 | | Lush, strong Pale Ale. |
Howling Hops (Brewed at Hackney Wick) - IPA New England Special | 6.90 | | Extra lush. |
09 Jul 2017 (Stephen Harris)
Late Sunday afternoon and it’s fairly quiet here, although getting busier all the time as we head towards early evening. Nine different beers available from the tanks.
Howling Hops (Brewed at Hackney Wick) - Summer Fruit APA | 5.50 | | Another murky golden beer. Fresh and hoppy and lovely. |
Howling Hops (Brewed at Hackney Wick) - Passion Fruit Gose | 4.50 | | Murky gold in colour. Very fruity and salty too and tart as well. I was completely puckered by the time the glass was empty. |
