Somehow the food did not seem to hit the heights tonight, but the beer was as good as ever.
Howling Hops (Brewed at Hackney Wick) - Pale Ale No. 2 | 3.80 | | A very cloudy, yellowish-coloured beer that is heavily hopped with Ella, Chinook and Galaxy). Staff have started warning customers just how cloudy it is. |
Howling Hops (Brewed at Hackney Wick) - IPA New England Special | 6.90 | | Cloudy gold. A very lush IPA. |
Howling Hops (Brewed at Hackney Wick) - Das Köolsch Lager Bier | 4.60 | | I’m not sure if this is the same beer that I have drunk as ‘Kölsch’ when in cask format. Sweetish and golden. |
01 Jun 2017 (Stephen Harris)
Mid-evening call for dinner and a couple of beers. For some reason I am off the hoppy stuff today. Nine home-brewed beers to choose from today.
Howling Hops (Brewed at Hackney Wick) - Cherry Gose | 4.50 | | Bright red. Salty and sweet. |
Howling Hops (Brewed at Hackney Wick) - Grisette | 3.60 | | Light and refreshing. |

I now have the advantage of a door-to-door bus service from this bar to my house (the No. 339). I should use it more often.
Howling Hops (Brewed at Hackney Wick) - Black XX No. 1 | 5.50 | | A lovely Black IPA – I’ve missed it. |
Howling Hops (Brewed at Hackney Wick) - Double Coffee Chocolate Toffee Vanilla Milk Porter | 6.30 | | Heavy and rich. Each of the listed ingredients is discernible. |
Howling Hops (Brewed at Hackney Wick) - East End Hefeweizen | 4.50 | | Cloudy, golden, banana. Slightly acidic. |
05 Mar 2017 (Stephen Harris)
Evening meal and a few beers. A very pleasant atmosphere in here.
Howling Hops (Brewed at Hackney Wick) - IPA No. 3 (West Coast Special) | 6.90 | | Sublime. More hops in this one glass than I tasted in 10 days abroad recently. |
Howling Hops (Brewed at Hackney Wick) - Cherry Gose | 4.50 | | Pale red/pink in colour. Mouth-puckeringly sour. Cherries and some salt. |
Howling Hops (Brewed at Hackney Wick) - Vienna Lager | 6.00 | | Not a style I’m very fond of, but I thought I’d give it a go. Amber in colour. Malt dominated – caramel. |

My first time in here this year and I had almost forgotten just how good the food and the beer is (10 different beers available today). A note on the beer dispense method in use at this bar: All beers are served direct from the conditioning tanks, coming on as soon as they are ready and remaining on until the tank is empty. The beer is protected by what I think we used to call ‘blanket pressure’ – so beer does come into contact with gas and carbonation is low when the beer is fresh but builds up over time. These are not therefore ‘real ales’, unlike key-keg beers which are real ale by CAMRA’s definition.
Howling Hops (Brewed at Hackney Wick) - NZ Pale Ale | 5.10 | | Inevitably, this is a pale and hoppy beer. The hops are Motueka and Nelson Sauvin. I need to increase my vocabulary for visits here if I am to capture the nuances of the different hop combinations. |
Howling Hops (Brewed at Hackney Wick) - Pale Ale No. 2 | 3.80 | | Excellent and exceptionally murky. An almost milky, thick, orangey colour. Hopped with Ella, Cascade and Galaxy. |
Howling Hops (Brewed at Hackney Wick) - IPA No. 3 (West Coast Special) | 6.90 | | Pale cold in colour and a huge smack in the face of hops. |

It’s been a lovely day to be afoot in London and I have been exploring all over the place. It’s amazing though how many of these fairly random Sunday walks somehow seem to end up here.
Howling Hops (Brewed at Hackney Wick) - Chocolate Stout | 4.80 | | Actually, maybe not all the beers here are hoppy. This one is silky smooth and chocolatey and sweet. |
Howling Hops (Brewed at Hackney Wick) - 1/2 IPA | 3.00 | | Fresh from the tank, this beer has an almost alarming, cloudy yellow colour. It is sharply hoppy. |
Howling Hops (Brewed at Hackney Wick) - Ruby Red Dinner Ale | 5.00 | | A hoppy (they all are here), US-style Red. |

Great beer and food here. Eight tank beers available. A boffin was telling me that the beer dispense technology here is pretty much identical to that used by the Zero Degrees chain.
Howling Hops (Brewed at Hackney Wick) - IPA No. 2 (West Coast Special) | 6.90 | | Gorgeous. |
Howling Hops (Brewed at Hackney Wick) - Raspberry Ripple Ice Cream Pale Ale | 5.50 | | Amber in colour. Raspberry and hops harmony with a creamy background taste. A very clever beer. |
Howling Hops (Former brewery at Cock Tavern) - Burton Ale c.1924 | 5.40 | | A cloudy golden colour. Not like any Burton Ale I have ever drunk elsewhere. |
05 Aug 2016 (Stephen Harris)
I ate in here this-evening for the first time and was not surprised to discover that the food is really good and tasty. All ten tanks were in use.
Howling Hops (Brewed at Hackney Wick) - Uto – Double Black IPA | 9.30 | | A collaboration beer with Verdant Brewery. I must be in paradise, a 9.3% Black IPA. |
Howling Hops (Brewed at Hackney Wick) - American Brown | 4.70 | | A murky brown beer, well-hopped with Citra, Mosaic, Amarillo and Simcoe. |
23 Jul 2016 (Stephen Harris)
I came here after enjoying an afternoon watching athletics at the Olympic Stadium. Lots of other people had the same idea, so for a while it was very busy at the bar. About 7 beers available.
Howling Hops (Brewed at Hackney Wick) - IPA No. 2 (West Coast Special) | 6.90 | | Another pale hop bomb, this time with Mosaic, Columbus, Amarillo and Simcoe in the mix. |
Howling Hops (Brewed at Hackney Wick) - Aussie Pale | 5.20 | Not Tried | A golden beer, well-hopped with Summer and Ella hops. Strength given today as 5.5%. |
10 Jul 2016 (Stephen Harris)
Mid to late-evening to watch the Euro 2016 final. Although a very large screen had been erected, disappointingly the signal was coming over the internet rather than a standard TV signal. This meant a somewhat odd picture (the players all looked like Kryten out of Red Dwarf) and occasional loss of picture. The bar was busy, with the majority of support being for France. I also drank an IPA but did not record its details.
Howling Hops (Brewed at Hackney Wick) - Pale XX No. 2 | 5.10 | | A new recipe of the Pale XX, with Citra, Motueka, Mosaic and Nelson Sauvin – giving a lusciously hop-filled beer. |
Howling Hops (Brewed at Hackney Wick) - Cog Zilla – Pale Riding Ale | 4.50 | | No surprise to find this beer is pale and hoppy. |
