A brief, late stop on the way home from Hackney.
Howling Hops (Brewed at Hackney Wick) - Black XX No. 1 | 5.50 | | Nice to see this yummy beer available again. |
Howling Hops (Brewed at Hackney Wick) - American Brown | 4.70 | | A dark, murky brown colour. Well carbonated. My second, lovely, hoppy Brown Ale of the evening. |

Standing room only in here on Sunday evening.
Howling Hops (Brewed at Hackney Wick) - American Brown | 4.70 | | A murky brown colour. Sticky malt and lots of hops. |
Howling Hops (Brewed at Hackney Wick) - NZ Pale Ale | 5.10 | | Golden. Typically hop-filled. |
Howling Hops (Brewed at Hackney Wick) - East End Hefeweizen | 4.50 | | Yellowish gold in colour. Bananary and estery. |

Here until well after my usual bedtime. Excellent DJ playing singalong, dance in the aisles, 60s and 70s music. A great night out.
Howling Hops (Brewed at Hackney Wick) - Pale XX No. 1 | 5.00
Howling Hops (Brewed at Hackney Wick) - IPA No. 2 (West Coast Special) | 6.90 | | A whopper. |
Howling Hops (Brewed at Hackney Wick) - Vanilla Sundae IPA | 6.90 | | My notetaking suffered somewhat tonight, but I marked this as ‘excellent’. |
Howling Hops (Brewed at Hackney Wick) - Luger | 4.60 | | A Pils-type Lager, hopped with galaxy. Like the galaxy, but something about the Pils-style leaves me cold. Probably just the name and the association of that name with horrors brewed under that name elsewhere in England. |
14 Apr 2016 (Stephen Harris)
Unexpectedly quiet in here in the early evening. Almost empty in fact. Still only four beers to choose from.
Howling Hops (Brewed at Hackney Wick) - Pale XX No. 1 | 5.00 | | Very lush indeed. |
09 Apr 2016 (Stephen Harris)
Early Saturday evening and it is heaving in here – no chance of a seat inside and a bit chilly outside. It has obviously been busy all day, as only four beers (usually ten) are available from the tanks.
Howling Hops (Brewed at Hackney Wick) - Pale XX No. 1 | 5.00 | | Very lush. |
Howling Hops (Brewed at Hackney Wick) - Amber Dexter with Coriander | 4.80 | | An amber-coloured beer with a good hop presence from Citra, Ella, Mosaic and Amarillo, plus a gently spiciness. |
17 Feb 2016 (Stephen Harris)
A rainy evening in Hackney Wick and it’s pretty quiet in here tonight. This despite the generous write-up in today’s Evening Standard. Eight beers to choose from, all served direct from the tank.
Howling Hops (Brewed at Hackney Wick) - IPA Export de Luxe No. 1 | 7.50 | | Luscious. |
Howling Hops (Brewed at Hackney Wick) - Aussie Pale | 5.20 | | Pale gold in colour. One of a series of “Small Batch” beers to be brewed here. Ella and Summer hops from Australia and very nice. |
08 Jan 2016 (Stephen Harris)
Very busy in here in the early evening. There is a new catering operation and a couple of changes amongst the 10 beers on sale. I stayed until 8:15, at which point the lights dimmed and the music became loud.
Howling Hops (Brewed at Hackney Wick) - IPA No. 2 (West Coast Special) | 6.90 | | I probably only need to list the hops – Mosaic, Amarillo, Simcoe and Columbus – to justify my 5-star rating. |
Howling Hops (Brewed at Hackney Wick) - Pale XX No. 1 | 5.00 | | A bit fizzy tonight, but fantastic flavours – this was one of my favourite beers of 2015. |
Howling Hops (Brewed at Hackney Wick) - Chocolate Stout | 4.80 | | Very smooth and chocolaty. |
03 Oct 2015 (Stephen Harris)
Getting 25 people here by bus from Whitechapel proved a little traumatic. Then most of the crowd didn’t like the beer here – too cold and too fizzy apparently (I generally think it is excellent). So most moved quickly next door to the Crate Brewery. All ten regular beers were available.
Howling Hops (Brewed at Hackney Wick) - Black XX No. 1 | 5.50 | | Served from the tank. Admittedly, it was a bit cold and fizzy today. Still very tasty though. |
04 Sep 2015 (Stephen Harris)
Possibly my favourite pub/bar just now, although I always feel a bit under-tatooed in here. I sat at a different table from usual – pretty momentous for me. All ten usual beers available tonight.
Howling Hops (Brewed at Hackney Wick) - Pale XX No. 1 | 5.00 | | Equally very nice indeed. |
Howling Hops (Brewed at Hackney Wick) - Black XX No. 1 | 5.50 | | Very nice indeed. |

Mid to late evening, catching up with an old friend. Our enjoyable conversation covered Northern Irish politics, the developing brew-pub scene in Berlin and travels in Ethiopia.

Howling Hops (Brewed at Hackney Wick) - Smoked Porter | 5.60
Howling Hops (Brewed at Hackney Wick) - Black XX No. 1 | 5.50
