Sunday evening visit. Surprisingly uncrowded here, especially when compared to Crate Brewery next door.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Howling Hops (Brewed at Hackney Wick) - Pale XX No. 15.00ExcellentIn my view this is the top of the range beer from Howling Hops just now. I had a couple of these and a couple of other beers (Black XX, Smoked Porter) too which I did not note, whilst my friend stuck on this all evening.

Sunday late-afternoon into evening. Quite busy tonight with a predominately hipster crowd – lots of beautiful people. All ten beers are available tonight.

A friend has been out of the country for a couple of weeks and missed the opening of this new brewery bar, and is keen to catch up. So we meet up here after work. We could not work out whether the beers are gas-propelled or whether there is a build-up of natural CO2 over time in the tanks. Either way, some of the beers seemed a bit fizzy tonight. I guess I should just ask somebody. Eight different beers available tonight.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Howling Hops (Brewed at Hackney Wick) - Black XX No. 15.50ExcellentSome people say there is no such thing as a Black IPA – this one seemed real enough. Bursting with hops.
Howling Hops (Brewed at Hackney Wick) - IPA Export de Luxe No. 17.50ExcellentAhtanum, Simcoe, Palisade, Chinook and Amarillo hops all packed in to this pale hopfest. Fresh on, slightly hazy and the lowest carbonation levels of the beers we tried.
Howling Hops (Brewed at Hackney Wick) - Ruby Red Dinner Ale5.00GoodA hoppy Red Ale.

This place is already starting to be discovered and there is a good crowd here in the mid-evening. I haven’t yet worked out exactly what form of witchcraft is used in the storage and dispense of the beers here – suffice to say they taste great, which is all that matters really.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Howling Hops (Brewed at Hackney Wick) - Running Beer4.00ExcellentA cloudy, golden-brown colour. Called a ‘Brown Ale’, but has no malty heaviness, rather a light, fruity hoppiness. Hopped with Citra, Chinook and Centennial.
Howling Hops (Brewed at Hackney Wick) - Pale XX No. 15.00ExcellentI had another go at this one to see if it was as exceptional as on Friday night. Still tastes really great, but a slight build-up of carbonation just took off the edge.
Howling Hops (Brewed at Hackney Wick) - Smoked Porter5.60ExcellentDark, smoky, hoppy, chewy, excellence. Hopped with Willamette, Centennial, Galena and Borek.
Howling Hops (Brewed at Hackney Wick) - Riding Ale3.00Not Tried
Howling Hops (Brewed at Hackney Wick) - Pale Ale No. 13.80Not Tried

The third night of opening for this impressive new venture, which could well be a game-changer on the London beer scene. Word has not yet got around for it to be very busy tonight – not doubt it will be once it is better known. In fact, many of tonight’s clientele are recognisable as fellow London brewers or publicans. Four of the ten tanks are being tapped tonight.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Howling Hops (Brewed at Hackney Wick) - Pale XX No. 15.00ExceptionalGolden and hazy. Has just about every new wave hop you can think of in its hop-mix. Crazy hophead paradise and wonderfully fresh.
Howling Hops (Brewed at Hackney Wick) - Pale Ale No. 13.80ExcellentPale gold and hazy. Lovely, almost sweet, fruity hop flavours from Citra, Mosaic and Simcoe.
Howling Hops (Brewed at Hackney Wick) - Riding Ale3.00GoodPale gold and hazy. Very well-hopped with Columbus, Cascade, Galeia and Nugget. HH’s contender for the low-strength but hoppy category.

The pub is found in Hackney, Greater London, E9 5EN.

The Howling Hops Brewery was established in July 2012 in the cellar of the Cock Tavern at Hackney Central. Very cramped conditions limited output and the varied range of beers could generally only be found in the pub. June 2015 saw the opening of a substantially larger brewery in Queens Yard, Hackney Wick and the associated, large Taproom. This occupies a former industrial premises, with the brewery itself at one end and a large space occupied by trestle tables at the other. Outside seating is also available and there is also a kitchen and a café-style counter. Uniquely in London at present, all the beers are poured directly from the conditioning tanks. Nearly as unusually, beers are only sold in two-third pint measures. The brewery stands almost next door to Crate Brewery.

We have visited this pub 75 times, seen 88 different beers and tried 86 of them.
