25 Apr 2014 (Dosser)
Canterbury Pub of the Year. Looking forward to our visit but what a disappointment. Gloombar, Master brew and Bombadier on 3 of the pumps. No thank you. Moved on.

13:00 visit. En-route to the centre and always worth a look in. Not too busy at this time.
Colchester - No. 1 | 4.10 | | A new ale for me. Very good too. |

12:00 visit. Not been in here for a year or so but nice to see that nothing changes:) David the bar men is still behind the helm and I recognise many familular faces :)
Ringwood - Razorback | 3.80 | | Good malty notes with a hint of digestive biscuit :) |
Hopdaemon - Incubus | 4.00 | | Very tasty :) |
Shepherd Neame - Master Brew Bitter | 3.70 | Not Tried
18 Aug 2012 (Blair)
Last port of call before the train and we ended up staying for a few hours thanks to the bar billiards table. Sat outside and saw off the last of the sunshine before heading indoors.
Ringwood - Razorback | 3.80 | | An uninspired but pleasant bitter. |
Shepherd Neame - Master Brew Bitter | 3.70 | Not Tried
30 Jun 2012 (Blair)
First port of call in Canterbury, we sat in the lovely beer garden and chilled out for a while.
Hopdaemon - Incubus | 4.00 | | Top condition. |
Shepherd Neame - Master Brew Bitter | 3.70 | Not Tried
Brakspear (at Marston's Wychwood) - Oxford Gold | 4.00 | Not Tried
07 Apr 2012 (Martin the Mildman)
Quite busy mid afternoon on a Saturday.
Crouch Vale - Yakima Gold | 4.20 | | Pale and crisp bitter with good citrus American hop flavour. Not much in the way of malt balance leaving a fruity citrus hop finish. My score 15/20. |
04 Feb 2012 (Andrew)
Last pub of the night and one John had had his eye on from the beginning. Sat at the bar and swayed a bit (a theme that came back later on when I walked into a tree on the way home).
Dark Star - Hophead was 3.8% (some has also been brewed by Fuller's) | 3.40 | | Burton snatch on every sip but then replaced by classic Hophead grapefruit hoppyness. Dare I say it but take the Burton snatch flavour away and this was nearly as good as at the Butchers. |
Banks's - Bitter | 3.80 | | Creamy red fruit. Nothing like the bottle version I can get from Aldi for a quid. Bottle version is better I think. |
Shepherd Neame - Master Brew Bitter | 3.70 | Not Tried
Sharp's - Doom Bar | 4.00 | Not Tried
24 Dec 2011 (Martin the Mildman)
Busy late lunchtime on Christmas Eve.
Dark Star - Hophead was 3.8% (some has also been brewed by Fuller's) | 3.40 | | Obviously a well cellared example of this beer as there was not only the excellent citrus hop flavour but also a well defined underlying malt character adding extra depth and smoothness to the beer. Best sample I've had in a long time - my score 16/20. |
18 Dec 2011 (Alenomore)
1800 and a good few in. A proper local feel to this pub. And having spent a small fortune in the excellent Canterbury Bottle Shop, visited the German Xmas market and the superb Foundry Tap, we all met here for one more ale before leaving for home.
Caledonian - Flying Scotsman (superseded by 3.5% version) | 4.00 | | On good form here today. |
Shepherd Neame - Master Brew Bitter | 3.70 | Not Tried
Sharp's - Doom Bar | 4.00 | Not Tried
Ramsgate Brewery (Gadds') - Seasider | 4.30 | Not Tried
