21 Sep 2010 (Martin the Mildman)
Busy with quite a few refugees from the Wenlock searching for some traditional pub furniture!

Moorhouse's - Black Cat Mild3.40ExcellentTop notch in here, smooth, sweet chocolate and liquorice flavours with low hop rate to give a classic dark mild. My score 17/20.
Acorn - Pacific Jade IPA5.00ExcellentGolden IPA with the latest hop from the other side of the world. This one gives a strong fruity citrus hop taste giving a refreshing tasting beer. My score 16/20.

Another quiet pub after the Bank Holiday.

Mighty Oak - Toe Wrestler5.00ExcellentStrong golden bitter with a good citrus hop character and also some biscuity malt which stays throught to the finish. My score 16/20.

Crouch Vale - Willie Warmer6.50ExcellentThis had been in the pub cellar for 6 months. An excellent dark brown old style ale with a full bodied smooth taste with nutty and toffee flavours balanced by some fruity hoppiness. A vineous, fruity finish. My score 17/20.
Dark Star - Over The Moon3.80GoodNow desribed as dark and bitter on the pumpclip, this is still a modern style mild in my book. It has a fairly high hop rate but also some roast and toasty malt and a little fruitiness. My score 15/20.
Ramsbury - 19663.80GoodWell balanced pale bitter with a dryish hoppy finish. My score 15/20.

The pub is found in Old Street, Central London, EC1V 9NU.

Just off the City Road near Old Street tube station and just behind Moorfields Eye Hospital. Entrances, in fact, on two separate streets. The pub was established in the mid-18th century, possibly originally as the Old Fountain Knights, and for a while there was another pub just around the corner called the New Fountain. Historically a Whitbread‘s pub, ownership has now been with the same family for many years. The pub has a split-level ground floor bar and a popular roof terrace. Traditional interior, with a longish dark wood bar. Ground floor upper level bar has 5 handpumps and the lower level bar has 4 handpumps.

We have visited this pub 129 times, seen 297 different beers and tried 216 of them.
