Now in a group of six, we were for a while outnumbered by cats in this eccentric little pub, the resident pair having produced five kittens. It really is a crackers place, and all the more endearing for it. We played ‘Nail the Pirate’ for a while, until it emerged that Woody was cheating.

Ah the Bag-o! Stood at the bar googling bus times with Tony for how to get to Nailsea.

I was very pleased to hear that this pub had re-opened; it is my longstanding Bristol favourite. It has so many likeable quirks: The landlord’s ‘rules’, chalked on to the wall and almost all of which I agree with, the pork pie menu in Russian, the eclectic, vinyl music selection, the ‘No Stupid Pub Crawls’ sign on the door, the slightly bonkers barmaid, the pickled eggs sold as ‘wrong ‘uns’, the fact that it is not troubled by keg fonts or much in the way of refrigeration. And of course the excellent beer.
Ashley Down - Sideways | 3.70 | | Golden. Sharply and juicily hoppy. |
Hardknott - Duality | 4.50 | | Golden beer that is well-hopped, although more fruity than bitter. |
Sunny Republic - Amber | 4.20 | Not Tried

Welcome return to trading for this small pub. Very brief appearance of the pub kitten during my visit.
Hop Union (formerly Great Western (GWB)) - Meerkat Mild | 3.90 | | Light ruby/brown mild with a bittersweet malt character and low hop rate. My score 15/20. |
Ashley Down - Pale Ale | 4.30 | | Distracted from the mild cause to sample this new local brewery. Dark gold in colour with a good balance of hop and malt and a fairly bitter finish. My score 15/20. |

Naylor's - Pinnacle Mild | 3.40 | | Dark brown mild, fairly bitter from chocolate malts and quite a bit of hop. Dryish bitter finish. My score 15/20. |

It was getting late (for us anyway, we'd being going since 1pm). We got a seat and listened to the locals having a chat about tea bags and the like - like you do.
Bristol Beer Factory - No. 7 | 4.20 | | A bitter. |
Cotleigh - Harrier Lite | 3.50 | Not Tried
Dorset Brewing Company - Durdle Door | 5.00 | Not Tried
Dorset Brewing Company - Steam Beer | 4.50 | Not Tried
Three Castles - Tiddly Dyke | 4.80 | Not Tried
Avon Brewing Company - Gurt Port Stout | 5.30 | Not Tried | Gurt apparently is a Bristolian term for good. Tony had this beer and said it was Gurt Average getting Gurt Worse. I had a sip and I could see his point. |
