Popped in for a quick half with Adrian. It was fairly empty and the main room had a man painting up signs. I noticed that one of the pumps had an Incubus clip turned round. It'll be interesting to see whether any guests are on in the coming weeks.
Weltons - Sussex Pride | 4.00 | | Served perfectly well, just not my kind of beer. Brown-black colour with a slightly burnt earthy flavour |
Banks's - Young's London Original (was Bitter) - previously brewed in Bedford and at Wychwood | 3.70 | Not Tried
Eagle (formerly Wells & Young's, formerly Charles Wells, formerly Wells) - Young's London Special (was Special) | 4.50 | Not Tried
Eagle (formerly Wells & Young's, formerly Charles Wells, formerly Wells) - Wells Bombardier (now superseded by 4.1% version) | 4.30 | Not Tried

Came for a quick half at lunchtime. Apart from a family having a meal and 1 other customer at the bar it was empty. The pub doesn't seem to have changed very much since Young's took over apart from the Young's Bitter and Bombadier at the bar. The landlord was friendly and when the Golden Braid went off half way through pouring it he recommended the Incubus.
Hopdaemon - Incubus | 4.00 | | I think this was near the bottom of the barrel but it was lovely. Plenty of Hopdaemon flavours with a stronger hop malt bite to it than usual. |
Hopdaemon - Golden Braid | 3.70 | Not Tried | Went off as I ordered it |
Weltons - Sussex Pride | 4.00 | Not Tried
Banks's - Young's London Original (was Bitter) - previously brewed in Bedford and at Wychwood | 3.70 | Not Tried
Eagle (formerly Wells & Young's, formerly Charles Wells, formerly Wells) - Wells Bombardier (now superseded by 4.1% version) | 4.30 | Not Tried
Weltons - Horsham Bitter | 3.80 | Not Tried

Came at lunchtime with Adrain for a last drink before it changes hands. We were too late. A hand-written sign on the door said it was closed until 6pm and the place was full of workmen.
15 Apr 2008 (Brian)
Had to get my hair cut so dropped in for one at about 3pm. Must have missed A&A. Big news though, the barman told me that the pub is to be sold to Young's and they take over next week. GAH!
Hopdaemon - Cuckoo | 3.80 | | This was better than at the weekend. Softer, with more fruit and balance. |
Weltons - Horsham Bitter | 3.80 | Not Tried
Weltons - Old Cocky | 4.30 | Not Tried

Having seen Ian's visit describing a new Hopdaemon beer and then Brian's visit about a misguided tourist I had to come didn't I? I Sat outside with Adrian and enjoyed the sun. Great pub.
Hopdaemon - Cuckoo | 3.80 | | Excellent mid brown pint pint. Oak-smoke aroma with an earthy slightly marmite bite with lots of nuttyness. Hints of vanilla and strawberry hiding away there too. Top beer. |
Weltons - Horsham Bitter | 3.80 | Not Tried
Weltons - Old Cocky | 4.30 | Not Tried
13 Apr 2008 (Ian)
Sunday lunchtime early, and not overly busy. Nice place to have a drink and a read of the paper.
Hopdaemon - Cuckoo | 3.80 | | Copper/amber with lasting beige head. Bit choccy on the malts, quite earthy hop becomes quite sharp on the finish. Good hop malt balance. The sweetish malts really help to balance the increasingly stinging hop. A new Hopdaemon beer? and a bit of a winner too. Lots of flavour for a 3.8% beer. |
Marston's - Bass | 4.40 | Not Tried
Hopdaemon - Skrimshander IPA | 4.50 | Not Tried
12 Apr 2008 (Brian)
Fairly quiet for a Saturday afternoon. Had a quick chat with a tourist who was on a Canterbury real ale pub crawl. Somebody had apparenty told him that the Three Tuns was worth a visit, I laughed and pointed him in the direction of the Bell and Crown as he felt the Phoenix and the Kings Head were too far to walk in his condition.
Hopdaemon - Cuckoo | 3.80 | | Darker brown than the Skrimshander, thin white head. Again a bit cold. Nice balance of malt and hop. Could of had a few of these. |
Hopdaemon - Skrimshander IPA | 4.50 | | Clear, mid brown/golden. Thin, bubbly disappearing head. A touch too cold to begin with, but a good fruit/malt balance. A bit watery in the mouth and missing the sweet floral notes it used to have. |
Hopdaemon - Incubus | 4.00 | Not Tried
Marston's - Bass | 4.40 | Not Tried
Weltons - Old Cocky | 4.30 | Not Tried

It was busy so Ian and I sat by the fire and got toasty warm. This is an excellent pub. As we left, Jazz Notes started setting up.
Hopdaemon - Skrimshander IPA | 4.50 | | This wasn't off but it certainly didn't taste like Skrimshander. I don't know if it was bottom of the barrel but it tasted like a cross between Skrimshander and Old Peculier. Shame as Skrimshander's usually lovely |
Greene King - IPA (was 3.6%) | 3.40 | Not Tried
Marston's - Bass | 4.40 | Not Tried
Hogs Back - Tongham TEA (previously T.E.A.) | 4.20 | Not Tried
Surrey Hills - Albury Ruby | 4.60 | Not Tried
House Beer - Simple Simon's | 3.20 | Not Tried

Pub number 3 on the Canters canter. Boy, that fire can get hot!!
Surrey Hills - Albury Ruby | 4.60 | | Very deep ruby with lasting beige head. Looks in cracking condition, and it is. Charcoal roast and lots of choc on the aroma. Great condition in mouth. Lovely mouthfeel. Good dark fruits and choc and this wide deep mouthfeel. |
09 Feb 2008 (Blair)
Popped in for a pint before getting the train home. Pretty quiet inside, but it was a lovely day so everyone was sat in the beer garden.
Hogs Back - Winter Ale | 4.40 | | Stunning pint. Very deep ruby colour with thin dark beige head. Shame I only had time for 1. |
