1st visit of the outing to Maidenhead and its environs: Very busy with diners as largely food-orientated in this ancient 15th century gem of an old pub in the picture-postcard village of Bray. To the righthand side, facing the bar, is a drinking area with tables and chairs and a side room snug. Prompt friendly service for my early afternoon visit and the drinking area was extremely peaceful. Superbly preserved with leaded-glass windows and ceiling beams and fireplaces and with one in the dining area lit with its logs glowing.

Rebellion - Selkie4.00GoodPresented with very good head and lacing and lasting the whole course on this amber-coloured ale from the Marlow Brewery and known as the Rebellion Beer Company, an independent microbrewery based in Marlow Bottom, a village north of Marlow, Buckinghamshire, and south-west of Beaconsfield, and established in 1993 and so reviving the town's long brewing tradition following the closure of the historic Wethereds Brewery. This is Rebellion Beer Company's monthly special for March and part of their 2026 British Folklore range with its name inspired by the shape-shifting seal creatures of Scottish and Irish folklore. A dry bitter first hit on this clear-as-a-bell amber ale. A gentle fruitiness climbing from its heavily hopped Krush, a bold American variety first released in 2024, lending it mixed berry and tropical fruit notes. Not too fruited for my taste buds with a bitter hoppiness winning over. A dry lingering and lightly fruited hoppiness sailing downwards. Very moreish and presented in top form.

This is owned by Heston Blumenthal. His famous restaurant The Fat Cat is next door, and the food in both places quite amazing. There are 4 hand pumps on, and a wide variety of wines and whiskeys. Plenty of seating but if you want to eat in the pub restaurant upstairs you need to book up about 2 months in advance for Fri / Sat evenings! Well worth the wait though! Little but suprised that given the passion for good food and wine in this place that the beer selection was so boring and un-inspiring. They should do some more bottle beers perhaps, and try some more interesting beers in the pub on pumps. Some food beer matching would also work so well in there.

Rebellion - Roasted Nuts4.60GoodThis was much better than the IPA. Good temp, not tired, plenty of chocco malts, interesting hop flavours, and pleasant lasting roasted finish in the mouth. Very sessionable.
Rebellion - IPA (was 3.7%)3.40PoorThin, almost non-existent head. This was tired, perhaps the end of a slow selling barrel?
