This pub has recently re-opened after a refurbishment and I feared that Young's would have done their worst but it seems that it has been refreshed rather than ruined and the magnificent bar back is still in situ. This was an early afternoon visit and the staff were enjoying their lunch and I felt a bit sorry for the girl who had to get up and serve me halfway through her meal. Another very welcoming pub and I would have stayed longer but I was already late for a gathering of friends in the nearby Mitre.

I came here sometime in the mid seventies when I was attempting the Young's 135 trail, something that I never completed. Not surprisingly it has changed a lot since then but still a good pub with plenty of wet trade.

13:45 Third stop. Reasonably busy. Sadly the bar back was temporarily obscured by a display of flags associated with some forthcoming sporting event.

13:30 Having a day riding around on trains I arrived at Richmond and found this place from the Good Beer Guide. The description looked interesting and it proved to be accurate. The Victorian glass and wood barback is a gem, it follows the Gin Palace style of advertising spirits, and is amongst the oldest in the country. The pub itself is friendly and welcoming and appears to have a good bunch of locals. A thoroughly enjoyable visit.
