Very busy in here tonight. It looks like a lot of the trade is coming from the cluster of chain hotels which have sprung up in the area.
Rooster's - 24/7 Twenty Four Seven | 4.70 | | Pale gold. Plenty of hop in this one, although a bit dry and dusty. |
Wolf - Sirius Dog Star | 4.40 | | The festival tasting notes led me to think that I would like this one a lot. I didn’t however. Fruity, sweet, toffee – a jumble of flavours. |
Greene King - IPA (was 3.6%) | 3.40 | Not Tried
Fuller's (part of Asahi Europe) - London Pride | 4.10 | Not Tried
Sharp's - Doom Bar | 4.00 | Not Tried
Wadworth - Terrapin Naked Bliss | 5.00 | Not Tried
Robinsons - Freddy Brewger | 4.30 | Not Tried

Mid-evening visit. Most customers seem to be here for ‘Steak Night’. Festival beers bore prominent tags giving the price as £3:15, but staff were advising that this was ‘wrong’ and the correct price was £2:99. When I suggested that perhaps they should take the labels off, I was told that none of the staff present were allowed to touch the pump clips.
Shepherd Neame - Fork & Brewer Low Blow | 4.70 | | Golden in colour. An excellent, crisp, hoppy Session IPA with a long, bitter finish. The hops manage to dominate with not a trace of the usual, distinctive SN taste. Best of the fest so far, in my view. |
Greene King - IPA (was 3.6%) | 3.40 | Not Tried
Fuller's (part of Asahi Europe) - London Pride | 4.10 | Not Tried
Greene King - Abbot | 5.00 | Not Tried

Adnams - Sixpoint Bengali (previously Bengali Tiger) | 6.40 | Not Tried
Southwark - Potters' Fields Porter | 4.00 | Not Tried

Quick visit after work. Relative calm in here whilst all pubs around about are heaving. Nevertheless, my first sighting of the season of a legless City type in a paper crown.
Lymestone - Pudding Stone (superseded by 4.4%) | 4.80 | | A nicely-balanced, golden beer, with some citrusy hop flavours and biscuit malt. Much nicer than I remember from previous years. |
Greene King - IPA (was 3.6%) | 3.40 | Not Tried
Fuller's (part of Asahi Europe) - London Pride | 4.10 | Not Tried
Greene King - Abbot | 5.00 | Not Tried
Sharp's - Doom Bar | 4.00 | Not Tried
Adnams - Lighthouse | 3.40 | Not Tried
Wadworth - Full Sail Wassail | 6.00 | Not Tried

Early evening. Looks like the beer festival is only just getting started here, with several ‘coming soon’ pumps.
Batemans - Colonel's Whiskers | 4.30 | | A stronger version of Bateman’s Dark Mild of many names. Not immediately obvious from the pump clip that it is a Bateman’s beer. |
Mad Squirrel (formerly Red Squirrel) - Erasmus | 4.70 | | Hazy, yeasty, malty, very cold, golden beer. Barely acceptable to be honest. |
Mad Squirrel (formerly Red Squirrel) - Conservation Bitter | 4.10 | Not Tried
Caledonian - Brouwerij 't IJ ISA India Session Ale | 4.60 | Not Tried
Marston's - Birrificio Lambrate Ligera | 4.80 | Not Tried
Wychwood (now brewed at Banks's) - Elysian Night Owl Pumpkin Ale | 6.50 | Not Tried
15 Jan 2014 (Stephen Harris)
Standing room only in the early evening.
Butcombe - Matthew Pale Ale | 3.80 | | Pale, full-flavoured beer with sharp fruit and hops. |
Greene King - IPA (was 3.6%) | 3.40 | Not Tried
Fuller's (part of Asahi Europe) - London Pride | 4.10 | Not Tried
Greene King - Abbot | 5.00 | Not Tried
Marston's - Wychwood Hobgoblin IPA (was Ruby Beer, was Hobgoblin) | 4.50 | Not Tried
Sharp's - Doom Bar | 4.00 | Not Tried
Dorset Brewing Company - Durdle Door | 5.00 | Not Tried
16 Mar 2012 (Stephen Harris)
An awkwardly-shaped, almost ugly pub. But always good beer quality and above average service for the chain.
Hydes - Owd Oak | 3.50 | | A decent-enough, slightly fruity, dark mild. |
Thwaites - Logan's Run | 4.30 | | A rather un-subtle fruit beer. Sweet and sticky. |
Greene King - IPA (was 3.6%) | 3.40 | Not Tried
Fuller's (part of Asahi Europe) - London Pride | 4.10 | Not Tried
Greene King - Abbot | 5.00 | Not Tried
Titanic - Nine Tenths Below | 5.90 | Not Tried
Caledonian - Zululand Zulu Blonde | 4.50 | Not Tried
Batemans - Smokey Joe | 4.80 | Not Tried
23 Oct 2010 (Martin the Mildman)
Fairly busy early on a Saturday afternoon.
Shepherd Neame - Cinque Ale | 4.10 | | Quite a dark amber/red bitter with an initial bitterness. This develops into a rather one dimensional flavour with little balance. My score 13/20. |
