Very busy in here tonight. It looks like a lot of the trade is coming from the cluster of chain hotels which have sprung up in the area.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Rooster's - 24/7 Twenty Four Seven4.70GoodPale gold. Plenty of hop in this one, although a bit dry and dusty.
Wolf - Sirius Dog Star4.40AcceptableThe festival tasting notes led me to think that I would like this one a lot. I didn’t however. Fruity, sweet, toffee – a jumble of flavours.

Mid-evening visit. Most customers seem to be here for ‘Steak Night’. Festival beers bore prominent tags giving the price as £3:15, but staff were advising that this was ‘wrong’ and the correct price was £2:99. When I suggested that perhaps they should take the labels off, I was told that none of the staff present were allowed to touch the pump clips.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Shepherd Neame - Fork & Brewer Low Blow4.70ExcellentGolden in colour. An excellent, crisp, hoppy Session IPA with a long, bitter finish. The hops manage to dominate with not a trace of the usual, distinctive SN taste. Best of the fest so far, in my view.

Quick visit after work. Relative calm in here whilst all pubs around about are heaving. Nevertheless, my first sighting of the season of a legless City type in a paper crown.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Lymestone - Pudding Stone (superseded by 4.4%)4.80GoodA nicely-balanced, golden beer, with some citrusy hop flavours and biscuit malt. Much nicer than I remember from previous years.

Early evening. Looks like the beer festival is only just getting started here, with several ‘coming soon’ pumps.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Batemans - Colonel's Whiskers4.30GoodA stronger version of Bateman’s Dark Mild of many names. Not immediately obvious from the pump clip that it is a Bateman’s beer.
Mad Squirrel (formerly Red Squirrel) - Erasmus4.70AcceptableHazy, yeasty, malty, very cold, golden beer. Barely acceptable to be honest.

An awkwardly-shaped, almost ugly pub. But always good beer quality and above average service for the chain.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Hydes - Owd Oak3.50GoodA decent-enough, slightly fruity, dark mild.
Thwaites - Logan's Run4.30AcceptableA rather un-subtle fruit beer. Sweet and sticky.

Fairly busy early on a Saturday afternoon.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Shepherd Neame - Cinque Ale4.10AcceptableQuite a dark amber/red bitter with an initial bitterness. This develops into a rather one dimensional flavour with little balance. My score 13/20.
