First stop on my tour of Liverpool’s heritage pubs. Late afternoon, just a few in. Impressive tiling.

Evening. Remembered to claim my CAMRA discount this time. Good few in. On leaving there was a railway replacement bus outside Moorfields station for some reason and it left immediately and went straight to Lime Street in a couple of minutes.

We had to travel from Moorfields to Lime Street Railway Station, and had the choice of catching the rail replacement bus service, or doing the journey on foot and stopping at various pubs on the way, we chose the latter. The Lion was busy as usual, we sat in the back bar which was quieter, and enjoyed a pork pie with our beer.

My favourite interior of any Liverpool pub. The wooden bar screen and etched glass and Victorian tiling are all awesome. Best whisky selection too. Pies look really tasty.

One of the most unspoilt Victorian pubs in Liverpool. Wooden bar, surround and rear screen are stunning. Three hatches at the rear and side to serve beer to the smaller side rooms. Etched glass, period light fixtures and stained glass cupola all add to the effect. Guest beers tend to be from regionals.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Copper Dragon - Best Bitter3.80GoodAmber/copper colour with thick beige head. Light enough hop, malt, yeasty aroma. Decent biscuity malt in mouth, soft and then slightly spicy hop on finish. Decent best bitter spice/pepper hop is excellent.
Jennings (since closure now brewed at Marston's) - Bitter3.50AcceptableDeep chestnut colour with lasting beige head. Nutty malty bitter with some sweet date fruit later in the palate. Faint malt aroma. Soft in mouth. Bit of hop on end. Decent session bitter, light of character, but with enough flavour to make it suppable.

Early evening and there was a transition of clientele from the office workers to locals in the main bar and other drinkers in the smaller rooms. The wallpaper and curtains really do detract from the general wonderful architecture of this pub
BeerABVScoreNotes
JW Lees (see also Lees) - Bitter4.00AcceptableDeep gold with creamy head. Use of sparklers at this pub methinks. Slightly eggy aroma. Firmish in mouth with yeasty hop inish. Could be good but ruined by sparkler. Bitter citrus hop finish, bit bready. OK bitter
Highgate - Dark Mild3.40AcceptableVery very dark brown, cream coloured head. Not a huge aroma, but some toastiness. Roasted malts in mouth are good though. Inoffensive mild, just requires more flavour
Belhaven - Caledonian Deuchars IPA3.80Not Tried
Adnams - Southwold Bitter3.70Not Tried
Banks's - Young's London Original (was Bitter) - previously brewed in Bedford and at Wychwood3.70Not TriedSeemed to be selling well

The pub is found in Liverpool, Merseyside, L2 2BP.

Wonderful Grade II listed pub right by Moorfields railway station in Moorfields. The Victorian tiling and etched glass alone are worth coming to see. There are 3 rooms served by a central bar. The main smoke room has 8 handpulls. The rear 2 rooms are served from the bar by 2 hatches. This is a gem. Quiet, yet just on the verge of the city centre. Good for reading and long technical conversations. In early 2013 introduced a discount on real ale for card holding CAMRA members but withdrew it in 2015 due to misuse by some customers. Closed for a while in late 2015 into 2016.

We have visited this pub 10 times, seen 33 different beers and tried 11 of them.
